Thanks, will try when I get home. If alt-o only works w/ that display up then that was my problem. I was trying from the main screen.

Ah, right, no it only works for popups.

For the past few months, my StoxEV software (commercial version) has not been working. I run the program (with Vista, as admin) and the small box comes up saying it's loading and/or downloading an update etc.. and then it says that box will close and StoxEV will open in 5 seconds. And then thats it, the box closes and nothing happens. And the program is not running in the background or anything like that, it just seems to crash.

I've tried re-installing and updating etcetc.. can't seem to get it to work.

Ok, I've replied to your mail.
Reason for the problem is that you switched computers a few months back (or formatted your computer) and I banned your new computer's key by accident instead of the old one.

Sorry for the inconvenience, I've mailed you with instructions on how to get StoxEV to run again. Let me know if you need support.

Hi scylla.

I'm trying to figure out how you do the calculations. How do you take in account the EV of the future decisions into EV of the decision is being taking?

For example, if you open raise from the sb, a lot of times the bb is gonna fold and you will take the blinds. But the times that bb calls or raises is gonna bring to us a lot of decisions with differents stacks, pots sizes etc. So how do you put this together to calculate the real EV of the first raise?

Hi Delphino,

In monte carlo mode StoxEV simply runs a large number of simulations and then determines the EV by deducting your bet/investment from the average yield.

In math mode all possibilities are enumerated.

Cheers,

Scylla

Sorry about that.
It slipped my mind that the last version expired today.
I've posted an update.
Please try again.

Will this website URL change too after May 1st? Flopzilla.com or moved to CR?

Changing the name and URL would make a lot of sense, however I really don't want to go through a rebranding process and everything that it entails.
Also, should I ever decide to associate myself with another site again, I'd hate to do repeat the process for the third time.

Hey Scylla,

do you forsee ever offering a version of the software that works with Mac OS natively, or is that pretty much never gonna happen barring the complete collapse of microsoft or something

I'm sorry, but I simply can not betray John Hodgman.

I see what you mean. Mr. "I'm a PC" kinda has that serial killer stare that would make even Phil Ivey look away.

Hi,

I wanted to make sure I understand something correctly.

If I am playing 50NL and I raise $1.50 and am 3bet $5 from the blinds and I shove over the 3bet and the program says my shove is -1.00EV....
this is a more optimal play then folding, am I right? If I fold I lose $1.50 in the hand, if I shove it is -$1 from that point, but that is .50 better than folding.

Am I understanding this correctly? For example, it seems that when 100bb deep once you are 4bet you are shoving because you would lose so much by folding, not because it is +EV to fold with AKo for example (if you were psychic and knew you would be 4bet there you would just call, not 3bet it).

Thanks.

I don't remember it also. To add to it the EV of folding = 0 and if EV of pushing is -1 that should be worse. But like You said when we fold we loose the 1.5 PFR and when we push we loose only 1.

The EV of folding in cash games is always $0 since that's what you'll be making with this action at this point in the hand.
The money you've already put into the pot is no longer yours.

NOTE: absolute vs relative affects the magnitude of various EV numbers but not their sign.

Absolute scales the EV by how frequently that node in the tree is reached, while relative answers the question: "now that I'm here at this node, what is the EV of my strategy going forward".

Would any NL players be interested in joining a private stoxev group where we collaborate on various projects using the calc? The software is great but I don't see myself becoming proficient on my own. It'd be great to build a database of common problems and gain experience through repetition.

So far myself and another midstakes 6m NL reg are researching the best forum to host the group. Right now we're leaning towards Google Wave. I haven't used it but it seems practical for our purpose. Real time collaboration and voice, video, image embedding.

Ideally we'd be able to keep scylla on retainer to answer questions and nudge us along

Clearly this will only work if the people involved are committed. Hopefully you're willing to spend at least 5 hours a week using the program. PM me with a little info about yourself if interested. ie game and stakes, hours logged using stoxev, etc. Would like to get 6-8 solid contributors.

I am interested. This is a very good idea but I am a HU player; maybe a different group?

I'd like to join a group too. I haven't used StoxEV for a while but I'd like to get into it again as I think it can be a very powerful tool if used correctly.

scylla, I just wanted to say thanks for all your work on StoxEV. This is an insanely useful piece of software that has really helped me figure out some spots that I was struggling with previously. The fact that you give something so powerful away for free is pretty awesome, imho.

And I probably only use 10% of its full capabilities!

Looking forward to getting the full version (a present to myself for hitting my goal stake, even if my bankroll cant really justify it).

I have a trial version. Yesterday it was all right, but today I cannot start it. I launch StoxEV.exe then window appears: "Starting StoxEV. This window will close in 5 secs". After that - nothing. Run as admin as usual.
