Had a really sh***y earlier yesterday at the tables. Literally rivered in an hour about 5 times. Then later in the evening i blew off another 400... I was steaming from earlier for sure.

Then I thought, hold up. Let's read the ANL elite player contract. It's amazing how much immediate serenity it gave me and totally cooled me down. I could hear Bill saying those words.

Completely turned it around. It's nearly 8am and I just don't want to leave as I'm holding the fabled hammer.

Thanks Bill.

Got together with Bill last October at GVR to discuss ideas to grow and scale his business. I was a former student who just did not have the time due to a growing business. Bill and I would talk every 6 months or so to bounce ideas, and update a growing friendship. He was excited about his business and about the different ways he could use the internet to grow it.

We sat at the Coffee Bean in GVR and drank Caramel Frappuccinos... He loved it! He had never had an Ice Blended Drink and kept saying with the southern accent..."Dang, that is sooo gooood..."

We were overdue for a 'meetup'. I will long regret not making the short flight to LV in March to have a Frappuccino with Bill.

I will miss you Bill. You are the Original "Virginian".

I am new to the forum and I was looking for a coach, I read the whole thread by not knowing the tragical news in the end. It really saddened me even tho I didn't know this man.

Looked like he took very seriously what he was doing, too bad there are only few people like him.

rip.

I will caveat by saying that I was just today looking for a coach and read through this and was terribly saddened not even knowing Bill. I read the 2012 Poker Strategy essay and I have never heard the concept of "entitlement" as being a leak, and definitely something for me to work on. RIP

My family would like to thank you guys about the kind words you have spoken describing the man you call the "Virginian". He truly was exactly as you have it. Very kind, very soft spoken, very forgiving, slow to anger, and just a pleasure to be around. He had a very soft and gooey, loveable inside that you guys enjoyed every time you spoke with him or had a Skype session with. These qualities among many others made it so easy to become his friend and this was throughout his entire life.

I want you to know a little about his background so that maybe you can understand how this came about. It may help some of you in your future in some way. He was raised in a small town in Virginia to a Christian home. Southern Baptist Christian home. A home where everyone didn't just attend church but where most everyone participated. His father helped Jerry Falwell of the renowned Thomas Road Church back in the early 70's. He was a member of the youth singers of our local church where his great uncle was a pastor. Deep family roots are in the ground of this community. No doubt he was a loveable kid growing up all on his own but there is no doubt all his surroundings he participated in helped to build that loveable core that you all came to know.

I ask you to ask yourselves that if those qualities of his are what you really were drawn toward then please investigate what made him so special. Don't let his death here on earth go without helping you in some way. Nothing else would be so special as to hear from some of you that this would lead you to a better direction.

There is no doubt that the life of the west, the cards, and other factors had their toll on him. He grew a scaly bark around all that sweet center he had. So much so that he couldn't take it anymore. This really hurts. All of us feel it.

He talked about you students a lot. He really loved working with you guys. I watched several sessions and I could see why they were drawn in. All the ones I saw were nice winning sessions. That's always good! I wish you all great success in your future sessions where you learn from each other many lessons each of you have. You probably have lots to learn and share from each other since everyone didn't get the same lesson.

Thanks again for all the kind words. It does mean a lot to me because I'm his brother.

-Robert

Robert, my sincere condolences to you and your family, Sir.

Your brother was definitely one-of-a kind. The type that would think about others before himself. For example, a while back when he needed to go to your neck of the woods expectantly, he asked me if I wouldn't mind changing the time of my session so he can do it from your place. I said, "Bill, it's not a problem. Enjoy the time with your brother. Let's re-schedule".

I enjoyed my time with him and I will never forget it. Not only for the poker knowledge, but just as much for chatting and shooting the breeze with him over skype for a couple hours every week.

There were times, in the beginning, that he would just preach to me about certain things such as pre-flop play for example, and just listening to him had such a pleasant and relaxing effect on me. It wouldn't matter if he was talking about poker or if he just shooting the breeze, he was just a pleasure to talk with.

I can only imagine how much he is helping other people right now in paradise.

God Bless,
Tony

I've had some conflicts with Bill in this thread in the past, but they were purely on a professional basis. All of that aside it seems like he was a thoroughly good guy and helped a lot of people out, and this is very sad news. My thoughts go out to his family, friends and students.

I can't believe that Bill is gone. I took a few lessons with him in January this year and have been winning solidly every month since. I hop back online to view this thread only to find this terrible news. RIP Bill. I will miss you.

Thanks again Bill, for all you taught me. For having the patience and skill to help me through a hand when I was floundering. For all those times you spent extra time to help, because you have it in your heart to go the extra mile, with no expectation of reward other than that you helped someone.

Absolute shame. I am really sad that he passed. I was wondering why he wasn't responding to my emails as we had a 4 hour monthly session. He will be missed. Thanks for turning me into a winning 5/10, 2/5 regular instead of the losing rec 1/2 player that I was only less than a year ago.

An excellent coach, a great person. I'm glad I got to know him.

Really sad news. I saw this thread and loved Bill's videos on NL Hold'em. You can tell he was a man who loved the game with a deep understanding of it, and wanted to pass on that knowledge. I didn't see the note at the top at first and was right about to contact him about coaching. Is anyone continuing his legacy in the poker coaching realm?

Completely caught off guard by the news. I had only done two sessions with him about 8 months back but enjoyed his approach. I found coaching wasn't quite for me but I wish I had reached out to him just one more time to thank him for those two sessions. Stand up funny guy. RIP Bill.

WOW...... I am deeply saddened by this news, and in complete shock. I took a few lessons from Bill a few years ago and had kept in contact with him over the last few years. To say Bill was a unique guy would be an understatement. I'll never forget paying for his quiz and that first Skype session with him. The second I heard his voice my first impression was " oh !#@! I just paid $150 to have this old southern guy teach me poker?? What did I just get myself into" That impression quickly changed after a few minutes of reviewing the quiz. Bill's approach to coaching was really down to earth, easy to understand and quite helpful. He was a no bullsh@! Kind of a guy, which may have put some people off but was quite helpful for me because he told you how it was and not what you wanted to hear. He really wanted his students to succeed and I generally believe he was happy anytime one of his students won big or sent a hand that was ANL approved. I never got a chance to meet the man or really talk to him about "life " or anything too personal but I am truly shocked to hear that he may have taken his life. He always seemed to be in good spirits and jovial during our sessions. I guess you never know what's going on in someone's head or in their life. I'm saddened I'll never hear that southern drawl " how ya doing buuuuuddddy" voice again. My heartfelt Condolences to Bill's family out there. Please know to his students and the poker community he was held in high standards and loved. Rest easy coach
