re: Rakes's SNG coaching, DragTheBar instructor, Free Video! - Rakes is back

Charles is one sick bastard. I came to him with a game wilting like a flower and he corrected my leaks so i became a SNG machine.

This my old account, i got coaching from Rakes after about 1000 games.

Game on my new account so far........weeeeeeeeeeeee!

Sessions are very professional and i really enjoyed the formats and structure. Great value as you can see!

Hey everyone,

Just to let you guys know, starting Feb 14th, I will be bumping my rate to 105/hr. So if you're on the fence of booking it at 85/hour, now it's a good time to book your hours!

thanks,
rakes

Evan at 105 an hour, its worth it.

I had two sessions with Rakes, and they were very informative, and gave me lots to think about, analyze and work towards. I have played about 450 $38 Sit'n Go's and have well over a 10% ROI. Very flexible schedule, very tough teacher.

I was never a very good student, so, two hours in an academic setting wouldn't normally be worthwhile, but Rakes really knows how to keep students on task and focused. Too bad he wasn't my first calculus teacher at University.......

Save yourself some money now, and possibly earn some serious cash afterwards, word.

Re: Rakes's SNG coaching, DragTheBar instructor, Free Video! - Rakes is back

I've had a 2-hour session with rakes about 2-3 weeks ago and it was a very pleasant and methodical - it has helped me plug several leaks on my game, and the results are already showing - in a sample of about 1.5k games i'm in my biggest upswing so far, with a solid 6% roi where before i was usually around 1-2% for the limits i play.

Would definitely recommend it for players of every level looking to improve their game.

Re: LIVE NO LIMIT COACHING

I've been playing poker as my sole source of income mostly in live cash games for almost 6 years now. I've made my biggest strides and improvements as a player picking Charles' brain and talking poker with him. I would recommend him to anyone looking to improve

Re: LIVE NO LIMIT COACHING

In the poker game of Los Angeles 5-10 nl, rakes is the rake... He's the ****ing rake...

Seriously though, I've known Charles/rakes for a few years now, and despite him being very outgoing and social and funny, I HATE when he shows up to my table in the morning. I know I'm going to have to tighten up (or he will 3b me to death and then not fold when I 4b ), and I know he's just about as +EV as anyone who plays mid-high stakes--> he's going to live up to his 2p2 sn and take a lot of chips off the table! I actually know what his win rate is because I bet him he couldn't achieve it over a decent sample (I thought it was nearly impossible to achieve in the games/hours he typically plays). He won the bet.

While I personally think coaching is incredibly -EV for the coach and incredibly +EV for the student, I respect Charles plenty (as a player and a person), and if we have different beliefs on something so be it.

So...

I really hope none of you looking for a coach actually go to Charles (one of the VERY few people who actually crush the games AND can articulate his thought process/tell you how to do it yourself), but you'd be really smart to imo if you like money.

rakes is the real deal and someone anybody would be lucky to get coaching from. i would suggest you get your coaching in writing though because his voice is going to give you a headache. lol.

hes a tough winning player who "gets it", basically a unicorn.

Re: LIVE NO LIMIT COACHING

Rakes has been coaching me for the pass three months, I started off playing 2-5 no limit at commerce casino before being coached by Rakes. Before my coaching sessions with Rakes I must admit I was a real awful player but right after our first lesson I could see immediate improvements in my game. Since our first lesson I have experienced dramatic improvements, I go into every hand with a game plan now, my win rate has increased dramatically and my hand reading ability has improved greatly. Also one great thing about Rakes is the help with hand history's, if you do something wrong in a hand he will make sure to let you know your mistakes and what you could have done differently. Also if you make the correct plays he will make sure to let you know that you played he hand well, this goes a long way in building the confidence of a poker player.

Re: LIVE NO LIMIT COACHING

Just wanted to give Charles aka Rakes a shout out and an honest review as we have been working together over the last 4 months. A little about me, poker is not my fulltime gig, I generally play 50-100 hours a month and work a fulltime job. Live poker has always just been something to do on my days off that I have shown to be able to make a decent hourly at as well.

I am lucky in the fact that I am good friends with the 2 most winning 5/10 NL players in my room so I have had competent people to talk hands with as I've played more. Sometimes though, you don't want to bother your friends and want an unbiased viewpoint. Also of note, I have been wanting to move up to the 5/10 game and don't want to necessarily give my friends too much information about how I play because they do this for a living and would absolutely show no mercy on me. I found Rakes coaching thread, we exchanged some PMs / emails and I decided to book 10 hours with him. I figured if my hourly increases $1-$2 over the next year it will have at least been a freeroll.

Before coaching with Charles I had proven to be a decent winner (not a crusher) in my 2/5 NL game over a decent amount of hours. Since I started working with Charles in December my hourly has definitely seen a significant increase / some run good involved. There is no doubt in my mind that Charles has helped me open up my game as I was probably playing a little too tight and passively for my own good both pre and postflop.

I think that Charles has a very solid grasp on what it takes to be a winning player in the live games I play in even though he plays across the country and has never played vs. my specific player pool. I get a lot out of our Skype sessions as I record them and take notes during and after. Charles also allows his students to shoot him hand histories via email in between coaching sessions which he usually responds to within 24 hours (sometimes he needs a friendly reminder). The hand histories are not super in depth (breaking down ranges / GTO stuff), but Charles will tell you whether he likes or dislikes your play and typically what he would do. These quick little hand history reviews are nice because they give you a pretty good idea of whether you were thinking correctly about the hand or not.

The only negative thing I have to say about Charles is that he did forget about one of our coaching sessions. Charles was very apologetic, didn't give me any BS excuses, and said he simply forgot to schedule it in his calendar. I was a little perturbed as my biggest pet peeve is people wasting my time (its the most valuable thing I have) but nobody is perfect and I understand that people do make mistakes. We were able to reschedule the session for a week later.

With that being said, I would definitely recommend Charles as a coach to any live cash game player looking to improve their game. I think that Charles is very good at articulating why he would do things but also challenges you by asking questions about why you should do something in a specific situation. I have one more session booked with Charles on my current package and plan on moving up and selectively playing 5/10 in May. There is a good chance that I will book some more sessions with him after I get a few hundred hours of 5/10 under my belt. I definitely feel like my game has improved over the last 4 months and appreciate the knowledge Charles has helped me gain.

Would you ever be interested in a deal of % cut in return for coaching?

It's possible with someone who is trustworthy enough to be staked. It's impossible to track results in live poker so it has to be someone with references. I did it once with someone I know IRL and it worked out well for the both of us. I'm skeptical of doing it online tho.

Re: LIVE NO LIMIT COACHING

That's something I'd be interested in, as well.

I've never been staked, but I could provide lots of character references, generally, and from people who play with me. I have a corporate job and would be willing to send any personal info that you'd require.

I've beaten $1/$3 for around $25-$30 hour and have started to become pretty diligent about tracking. Just want to iron out fundamentals for moving up to $2/$5. Currently I have lots of random, probably half-baked theoretical bits (thin value betting, floating, range merging etc.) floating around in my head, and have strong hand-reading intuitions---I just haven't systematized it, or really developed the mathematical side.

PM if you're interested in scheduling a Skype interview session or something like that.

If you're earning $25 p/hr @ 1/3 then you can likely afford to buy a few hrs package and see if it's for you.
