a thread seems to have vanished a thread seems to have vanished

i'm wondering how often, and under what circumstances threads are 'removed' or deleted entirely from 2+2, or another explanation for why a thread no longer seems to exist.

I recognize the 'under what circumstances' might be rather a broad question, or may require a lengthy answer if it were to be answered thoroughly, and I don't require that at all.

it's that I recognized a thread..basically of little consequence/importance, and certainly not inflammatory, just a question and then later a follow up question that seemed genuine, to which i and several others had provided responses (posts) is missing. I looked at my post history as well as the post history of 2 of the other posters in the thread and the posts as well as the thread are missing from each of our histories.

so if its easy enough to answer, can i get brief explanation as I'm curious, how/why a thread dissappears?

In that case of "50+ posts deleted" would it be a massive PITA to make a single post in the thread stating:
50+ posts have been deleted. That may include your post. Don't do it again.
How about the more common case where one post is deleted?
If a mod deletes one post, which scenario is more beneficial to the forum?

In this case, it seems the poster was a spammer, and all of his posts were deleted.

When an OP is deleted, the entire thread goes with it.

Aliens often abduct threads, but it's always covered up.

It was a bit of an unusual situation in that the poster started a fairly normal thread, which got a number of good replies, and then went on to make posts elsewhere on 2+2 that were deemed to be spam. When someone has only been here for a few days/weeks, and have made several spammy posts, moderators will often use the OTB&C tool, which bans the poster and deletes all of their posts. As Mike said, deleting the first post of a thread deletes everything.

Since it looks like that thread had generated some discussion, I've undeleted it.

And again, where does the supermod fit into this?

I think I understand your overall point here - I'm sure there are times when a post is deleted and the poster is genuinely at a loss as to why that is, and I'm sure that's frustrating. But the vast majority of the time, it should be quite apparent, and a good number of those times the poster does get a PM with their infraction. Unfortunately, your solution is pretty much unworkable.

Because what will happen a decent percentage of the time is the person will get butthurt and will argue about it which could lead to a rather lengthy exchange involving the deletion of a single post. Which let's face it, unless it's an epic post or an often-bumped thread, once a few days or a bunch of newer posts happen it's all but buried on the internet forever.

(Although one comic aspect of implementation of your rule would be Dids, because not only does he post about how he hates PMs and can't be bothered with them, but he also deletes posts by the hundreds, so he would literally be PMing all day and night or would be forced to delete less. Which is basically a win either way.)

Also, supermods don't have jurisdiction or whatever over a regular mod, their purpose is to delete necessary things out of forum as needed. No point in getting them involved.

thanks for the explanation. it makes sense.

i have seen posters banned and threads locked, but this was the first I had noticed a thread deleted and I was puzzled and curious.

it wasn't actually necessary to un-delete, but appreciated and i hope it didn't take too much time or effort. thanks again

Your post made an impression on me.

I was left uncharacteristically speechless.
