It was a bit of an unusual situation in that the poster started a fairly normal thread, which got a number of good replies, and then went on to make posts elsewhere on 2+2 that were deemed to be spam. When someone has only been here for a few days/weeks, and have made several spammy posts, moderators will often use the OTB&C tool, which bans the poster and deletes all of their posts. As Mike said, deleting the first post of a thread deletes everything.
Since it looks like that thread had generated some discussion, I've undeleted it.
VP$IP, it seems you forgot to include the replies you got:

I think I understand your overall point here - I'm sure there are times when a post is deleted and the poster is genuinely at a loss as to why that is, and I'm sure that's frustrating. But the vast majority of the time, it should be quite apparent, and a good number of those times the poster does get a PM with their infraction. Unfortunately, your solution is pretty much unworkable.

I like where your head is at here - I honestly do - but it's just way too much work to engage someone about every post deletion. Because what will happen a decent percentage of the time is the person will get butthurt and will argue about it which could lead to a rather lengthy exchange involving the deletion of a single post. Which let's face it, unless it's an epic post or an often-bumped thread, once a few days or a bunch of newer posts happen it's all but buried on the internet forever.
(Although one comic aspect of implementation of your rule would be Dids, because not only does he post about how he hates PMs and can't be bothered with them, but he also deletes posts by the hundreds, so he would literally be PMing all day and night or would be forced to delete less. Which is basically a win either way.)
Also, supermods don't have jurisdiction or whatever over a regular mod, their purpose is to delete necessary things out of forum as needed. No point in getting them involved.
