Yeah but Jellico being a prick isn't a justification for insubordination. Jellico was preparing for a military confrontation -- he wanted the scheduling changes and maintenance work done ASAP because he thought that the Enterprise could be in a shooting war if Picard's mission and/or the negotations went south. The absolute last thing he needed was to get into a pissing match with his first officer, but that's all Riker seemed interested in.

Yes Riker's insubordination is uncalled for, and he deserved to relieved of duty, but his mounting frustrations were justified. Because Jellico needed the crew at their best ASAP, the last thing he should be doing is completely shaking things up, and letting them do what they know the way they know best. A good leader would recognize that.

But the change to four shifts and the engineering optimization isn't arbitrary and capricious, it's a preparation for war. Jellico can't wait for the crew to settle in with him and allow everyone to get comfortable with him before he makes changes because he believes that war could break out very soon. Yeah it's not great that Jellico has to rush these changes, but doing them ASAP is certainly better than waiting until war breaks out.

I think no one here is questioning why he made these changes. Everyone in that ship knew what was going on with the Cardassians. It's the way Jellico behaved that irked the crew- lack of communication, lack of leadership skills, and very un-Picard like. The way a commanding officer should behave during a time of war- that's for you to decide. But all those things made the episode very enjoyable to watch.

Oh for sure that conflict fed that episode... to make no mention of the interrogation scenes in part 2.

Picard's admission that he was indeed going to tell the Cardiassian he saw the wrong number of lights was great. Never seen him as vulnerable over the entire show as he was then.

I love TOS but there's no way they would ever portray Kirk as that broken.

He can say he would have done it til the cows come home, but he never actually broke.

He was seconds away from saying it and would have unless the Romulan Commander entered the room. Talk bout nitpicking. He was broken at that point but got "saved by the bell" to use a boxing analogy.

Cardassian .. my bad. I'm on quite a few diazepams right now and about to pass out. I've seen the episode like 5 times , just a minor lapse due to my state of mind.

You guys got the point. Picard was broken even if he didn't have time to say he say he saw 5 lights.

What are your guys' thoughts on Season 1? As a kid growing up, I loved it for some reason (maybe more action). But have came to appreciate the later seasons..

I remember really loving "Conspiracy" and being disappointed that they dropped that plot thread.

I don't see why they don't do it. If they could get Enterprise numbers it would be a massive hit. There are so so many built in fans, if it's good they would get that many easy.
