It was an international man hunt for someone who never used the same identity (because they burned every single one of them when he used it first) and while he wasnt being literally hunted by everyone he was the number one target of the FBI's white collar task force.
I think the way it happened was good - they showed enough that we knew Neal would only ever be caught by his own mistake - that mistake was then as it is today Kate.

We know one more piece of the puzzle. That said, a guy who stole hundreds of millions can have a lot of power and it has to be added that he has disappeared completely despite being such a high level target.
Its also worth pointing out he knew who Neal and probably pretty early in the con. We know both he and Alex have wanted this music box for a long time, perhaps they are working together? Is he the guy at the top, or is there a guy above him at the top? When did he learn who Neal was (perhaps Alex was the test for him)?
There there is the fractal and what is in the box. We know its going to track down something which was lost around the time of WW2 - why was the secret in the box? What is it, Nazi Gold, a stash of art, the holy grail?

I feel like they could have even made that episode two hours long and it would have been just a good. They easily could have shown more of what went on with Neil after he left the country... and more of Peter trying to track Neil.
I think the only part of the episode that disappointed me was how easy it came to them to trap Neil. Diane came it... suggested trap Neil with Kate..and easy game. I guess it makes sense, since a) there are time constraints.. and b) it's been shown over and over that Neil does dumb **** when it comes to Kate... but it just seemed too easy. Still an A+ episode.
They could have made the backstory of this show an entirely new show if they wanted. Right now the way i see it Neal said only the bare minimum of what Peter needed to know about this case and his past. There will be other situations discovering what happened back then including the entire other side of the coin with what Adler knew, when and why.
The show was always about the secret of the music box. Going off the deep end into Neal committing various cons to draw attention for Kate would be cool, but it would be a distraction in the show. I dont think any fan would hate doing so, cos it would be pretty awesome, but it wouldnt get us any further along. That episode as well as having a lot of what was obvious will probably have had several easter eggs hidden in it which will only become apparent later on when we know more.
As someone else said and i covered a bit more, Kate is Neal's kryptonite. I think what works most about this was it was so simple everyone just overlooked it. They were liaising with various police forces, were predicting his patterns and where he will strike next, burning all his identities as soon as he created them but they only finally got ahead of him when they changed the rules of the game. They also shouldnt have caught him, which is the point of it. Mozzy warned Neal, he surveiled the area enough to see the van they were in but not enough to make sure they werent in it, he had all the time in the world but instead blundered straight in there which is when the net closed. Neal getting caught acting like such a rookie was pretty much the perfect end.
