'Westworld' remake - possible new HBO series 'Westworld' remake - possible new HBO series

Never heard of the original, seems like an odd subject to make a series out of.

Original IMDB storyline:A robot malfunction creates havoc and terror for unsuspecting vacationers at a futuristic, adult-themed amusement park.

Great movie, but strange pick for a series - It's essentially a monster movie. Unless they're going to Bladerunner it or something.

They are apparently starting with Westworld (and its sequel) as the starting block but modernising it using the themes of artificial intelligence being created and how it effects humanity from then on.

Essentially the first film was about a theme park where rich businessmen paid a lot of money to go pretend to be cowboys and they had special guns that would only shoot if they were aimed at robots, so basically they would kill completely life-like androids over and over and in the end they didnt like it and yadda yadda. Pretty decent classic sci fi - there is a great scene early on where a couple guys returning talk about how one killed three or four androids and he says something like "at least I assume they were".

The sequel which was pretty bad extended the concept so there were multiple worlds like romanworld and futureworld (set on a space station) where again the androids are exploited and eventually revolt. Beyond Westworld, which I havent seen, basically extends it even further with the androids which can pass as people being out in the world.

There are a lot of themes they can play with. Presumably it is going to be like Deadwood with androids walking around that start to become self aware breaking their programming constraints, where the main human cast will be people behind the scenes fixing the robot and directing the park (think like the Truman Show) - it risks being very cliche very quickly (you just know the guy in charge will decide to cover up the first murder(s)) but with some good casting of androids I could see it working, esp on HBO.

Interesting timing with Almost Human being picked up for November.

Westworld was my favorite movie when I was 10. It's a pretty lame movie, though.
Futureworld was worse but has a hot Blythe Danner in a white jumpsuit. So it evens out.

It's also no longer a 'possible new' series, HBO has green lighted it for sometime in 2015.

I hope it's better than True Detective Season 2.

Hopefully it turns out like a BTVS or Fargo type of situation, where the movie was more the backdrop for the series, as opposed to being the source of actual plots and specific characters, although in at least a few instances (Highlander comes to mind right away) that type of model also has worked.

If you're not aware, Jonathan Nolan created Person of Interest, which I think is one of the best written and constructed shows on TV. So, he's getting major benefit of the doubt here.

Not Deadwood looks good. Seems like it's been in development forever. Nice to see it finally get a go date.

looks awesome.

for those that don't know the original book all this is based on was written by michael crichton.

early crichton before he lost his talent n started just writing right wing anti environmental crap.

his early work is some of the best fiction ever.

I've read a ton of Crichton, but I didn't know Westworld (which I saw as a kid and liked then) was based on his work . . . do you know what book?

The Andromeda Strain was outstanding. So was Travels.

Crichton wrote/directed the film - not sure if it was based on any earlier work of his.

Really looking forward to this, it looks sick/expensive. Apparently there were massive production issues, but still hopeful

Westworld was a film written and directed by Crichton. It was not a book first, it was a screenplay. It starred Yul Bryner and James Brolin. There was a sequel called FutureWorld starring Peter Fonda and a really hot Blythe Danner.

Saw this advertised during the GoT finale. I vaguely remember the film but I was around 8-9 at the time I saw it.

The show looks really cool, definitely going to watch.

I liked the original movie - pretty good for its era.

Rather skeptical about turning films into series. Sometimes they can be good.

Turning a series into a film, though, generally doesn't work for me.
