S2 at least started intriguingly. Maybe I was still giving it the benefit of the doubt for a while, but I think I liked the first half of the season and still was on board with it being a good show until the last couple episodes.

And Jonathan Nolan only has himself to blame - he should have taken himself off the writing team after his woeful season 3 and focused his efforts on Fallout as a script writer and left the show running to Lisa Joy who we saw in that season and season 4 was far and away the better writer out of the two (the two finales of season 3 and 4 were a disgrace (when arguably they ought to be the strongest or second strongest episodes of the season) and this was despite Lisa's writing actually reviving the show in season 4). Yeah sure he could contribute to some story ideas but that was it - just should have been an honorary EP.

I'm actually quite annoyed at this given the high quality of season 1 and season 2 to a large extent that they couldn't make it to season 5 given HBO should realise with all the shows they cut that they eventually realise later that it was a mistake or should have (in the case of Deadwood, Carnivale, etc.).

I think my biggest problem with the show was that it was just too complicated a story. I had to read episode recaps to point out all the subtle plot points.

Yeah I'm sure that is Jonathan Nolan again (you know trying to constantly compete with his brother).

It's a shame because this show was elite in season 1 and then pretty rapidly fell off a cliff. I quit in season 2 which looks like a good move. The new HBO head stated that if a show can't outdraw Big Bang Theory reruns there is no room for it. Westworld was drawing around 350k. By comparison Deadwood drew over 2 million at the low and Carnivale wasn't far off, but both were declining.

They put Westworld out of its misery. S1 was a stonecold masterpiece imo, and S2 still had good moments.

Can't remember a bigger decline in quality among TV Shows though. What a shame.

But hey, The Peripheral on Prime wil totally not fall off a cliff and waste all our valuable viewing time right?

Well, it has the benefit of having a book as source material, plus a sequel. It remains to be seen how closely they'll follow that material though...

Like I was saying the biggest disappointment was that they actually turned it around in the mid part of season 4 and it was like yep that is Lisa done for her half of the season and she goes off on vacation and in comes Jonathan Nolan from his holidays who picks up the showrunning from there and it is like WTF - completely destroys the progress of getting to a 5th season with that incredibly lacklustre finale at the end.

Definitely echo that S4 had been picking things up after what was by far the low point in S3. We finished S4 shortly before they announced the cancellation so that's a bit of a bummer. S1 and most of S2 were indeed very elite TV.

Friend also just bugged me about The Peripheral as well, but not sure I can bother with non-HBO at this point.
