I feel like the writers are trying to deliver a thrill a minute, creating over the top characters and implausible storylines. If they went with a less is more attitude, and focused more on character development, this might be something interesting.

It's getting better, if they learn from their mistakes, there's potential here going into next season.

Seems obvious he's not going to prison so I wonder how they're going to handle this arrest. I was actually expecting to see the perp walk in the season finale, not two eps before it.

Spoiler:
My first thought after seeing the previews for next week is that he wiggles out by rolling over on his new "partners" but they're wiseguys so that doesn't really fit

Scenes like the black manager with the guitar are what keep me watching (or at least fast-forwarding through) the rest of this crap.

The Lester Grimes character and storyline is by far the most interesting part of this show

In the last episode the guy who played the DJ at the black club when he played the Indigo disco tune was the best. Not one line of dialogue but a great performance in just his short scene.

Every week I tell myself I'll give it one more week waiting for something awesome to happen. It doesn't. The insanity will continue for 1 more week.

So I guess we're seeing the birth of disco in the black club?

Not sure if it will help, and I really don't see how the show's lackluster ratings are his fault, but Terence Winter has been let go as show runner and exec producer. I can't remember off the top of my head who is replacing him but you can google it if you care.

I would imagine a guy like that has enough sway to not get fired off a show like this by HBO. Maybe he's going to be doing something bigger/better.

To me, it seems like most of the newer HBO shows have fallen into the ok, but not great category. Luck had potential, but they let themselves be browbeaten into canceling it.

It's kind of depressing to think there was a time when HBO had The Sopranos, Deadwood, The Wire, and Rome all going at the same time. Now it seems like they want to have one flagship show and an assortment of half-assed ones. They need better writing, and they need to be a little more selective in terms of the general premises of the shows they put on.

I remember reading a few years back that HBO was looking into to doing a dramatized version of the Cocaine Cowboys stuff. If they had the right guys writing it, that show would have been tremendous. How they pass up on that and go with this is beyond me. I don't think this show is terrible or anything, but it could be much better than it is, and even then it has sort of a low ceiling on the awesome scale.

I agree that their hourlong shows have taken a downward turn but their half hour shows are pretty great. Veep, silicon valley and girls are all great, and I liked a lot of their recent half hour shows that ended up getting cancelled like enlightened and looking. And the guy in charge of their half hour shows recently took over development for all shows. So maybe they can get back on track.

They still have an hour-long show called Game of Thrones.

That's their flagship. IMO it's their only high-level show, and it's got one more season after this one.

And from a quality standpoint it's nowhere near sopranos, deadwood, the wire or Rome.

I agree, but if they had 3 GOT level shows, and a couple of worse ones going every year, I'd be happy. I feel like with Chase and David Simon, they had one particular story to tell that they were super-passionate about, and everything else they do will be on slightly lower level. With guys like Milius and Milch, they need to just approve a general premise, give them a good budget and a 4-season minimum guarantee, and let them go to town on it. I think they'd very likely get something amazing, and they almost certainly wouldn't do worse than most of the stuff they're putting out now.

Back then HBO and Showtime were the only game in town. Now every cable or streaming network chases these shows and very few are outstanding. FXs new shows have been way better than HB0.

So Winter cut BE short and rushed the last season to jam everything in so he could do one season of this show?
