Re: Vinyl - premieres 14th Feb on HBO

I don't even know who that is lol, a recap wouldn't have helped.

Maybe that's why it didn't work for me, everyone else I either at least heard of and knew some stuff about them or knew who they were by music/look.

Re: Vinyl - premieres 14th Feb on HBO

This is a very short thread for a show that is really improving episode by episode.

Loved the fact that Richie's office building entrance is right next to Jack Dempsey restaurant which has to be the same place Michael Corleone gets picked up the night he hits the Turk and Cop.

I guess if you don't know much about the 70's music scene it's not LOL not knowing who Karen Carpenter was. But it is hugely LOL at thinking Boardwalk Empire's Rosetti's first name was Chip. (it was Gyp)

Yeah, an immigrant Italian mobster from 1920's NY had a preppy WASP first name.

IMO this is a problem with the show connecting to a younger audience. The story is set in 1973, before punk & new wave, disco or rap hit the public consciousness.

Nasty Bitz style/sound is very common today, but in 1973 it would be revolutionary. Unless you were alive then (or a music historian) it could be difficult to grasp that.

I watched most of Treme, this show is very similar but worse on most points. It's not a bad show, if you like the music and the period (and didn't watch Treme), I would probably recommend but not for me atm.

It's the same place. I assume it was included either to highlight the location of the label's offices or to (further) highlight the time period, or maybe both. It closed in 1974.

Actually after googling I do know who she is but not cuz of music, cuz of how she starved herself to death. I assume she was just a Britney Spears of that age and I don't listen to pop from back in the day. It's the same reason why a lot of Beatles stuff sucks, they were a boy band when they popped out and then evolved to a more awesome sound. LOL, I turned into a man in the 21st century so WASP is just some word that I here in movies set in the 80s and such that mean nothing now, sooooo who gives a ****?

WASP ia not a "word", it's an acronym...White Anglo Saxon Protestant, which clearly does not describer an Italian ghetto guy.

Re: Vinyl - premieres 14th Feb on HBO

I had been looking forward to this quite eagerly, especially since HBO showed previews nonstop over the previous 3 months. Then somehow I forgot when it started and ended up watching Ep 1-3 a couple days ago.
I was really disappointed. It moves slow and the characters are really weak. There is nobody for the audience to really care about imo.
I know its only 3 episodes in but this thing appears to be going nowhere - or more precisely, I dont even really care where its going because Ive been bored with most of it so far. And whatever plot lines the writers attempted to develop are just lacking.
Bleh.

Re: Vinyl - premieres 14th Feb on HBO

Maybe I'd like the show more if I was more familiar with the mid/late 70's music scene, but Im guessing that a big % of the viewers that HBO is targeting also dont know **** about 70's music.
Even the parts that are supposed to be suspenseful are just anticlimactic like the Nasty Bits finally playing their "own" music right before Richie was gone was just so weak.
Richie imagining that the roof collapsed on him - weak. Then finding out that the building collapse was supposed to be real? Even dumber.

Just watched the pilot and I'm having a hard time getting past the final scene of the building collapse. I may give it a few more episodes, but that whole sequence was terrible.

Re: Vinyl - premieres 14th Feb on HBO

I gave it one more chance and watched episode 4.
It still sucked. There was really nothing interesting going on, and I was just as bored as I was for the first 3.

Considering the creators of this show, I feel like it's my fault for not liking it much more than I do. Everything's great except the scripts.

Re: Vinyl - premieres 14th Feb on HBO

Just finished 4 episodes. Anyone here keep track of how many times "Donny Osmond" has been mentioned since the very start?

As for the story itself, its looking like Richie and/or Lester are going to be pioneering the promotion of both punk and/or hip hop.

They are really doing a great job with the famous musicians in the show....but I really don't give a **** about Devon's problems.

Prince was born in 58, what year is this supposed to be? even if it's 79, Hannibal looks a lot older than 21
