Surprised by all the love for Floki, guy annoys the hell out of me.

Good show though, but def moving too fast to be considered great for me.

The sacrifice was supposed to be willing, correct? And a follower of Viking religion?

Then did Ragnar think that he could pull a fast one on Odin and sacrifice an unwilling Christian? Or did he know the sacrifice would be rejected and this was an opportunity to do some "internal house cleaning" of his own ranks and get rid of some other guy? Or did he actually believe that the monk had fully converted to norse paganism and would go willingly to the altar?

Also what is up with Ragnar having a son?
doesn't he have another one?
and is it really worth all that fuss for something you already have?
or does ragnar want to do something bad with his current son?

They used to have like 10+ kids back then. Its only recently we only did the 2-3 kids type of deal. The more sons you have the more loyal leaders you have to obey your command.

Floki is awesome.

Definitely agree the show moves too quickly. The pace is far too fast to truly develop the plot and characters.

I'm not sure, but I thought it might be to test the priest's conversion and see if it were true, or maybe just to screw with him.

anybody wonder how many years they've been jumping. He carried the bible when he got brought over now the bible is old and dingy it broke up in to dust. And he has like old man hair on his head now. It's like the priest aged 5yrs or something.

Yeah the priest's timeline is moving very quickly in comparison to the rest of the cast. Growing his hair out plus the goatee, and both kids are still small. Rolo's wounds have healed quickly tho

Hopefully now that a second season has already been renewed they'll slow things down a bit and hash out some of the more character driven plot lines

The bible was burned when the old earl burned down Ragnar's home.

I would guestimate the timeline of the show has been a year, but its really hard to judge cos they dont give any context to speculate from.

Well Then, I ll have to agree with you on that. I guess the Viking society was pre-modern and like all such societies had a high child mortality rate.

Add to that the fact that Viking society was extremely violent and you have a good chance that if you only have only one son he might not outlive you. Having more than one son was a necessary insurance policy if you wanted the family line to continue.

am pretty sure that's the reason behind it.

Besides, population pressure tends to motivate the more ambitious ones, or the desperate ones. Which the Byzantines and the Persians were discovering at the other end of the map.

I liked how they did the priest storyline. I think most of the audience did not want him to die. At first you sweated that he would be a sacrifice, then you knew he would be a sacrifice (when the daughter was washing him and sht), then when he was brought to meet the King you figured he was too valuable for Ragnar to sacrifice. Then you thought he was going to be made a holy man of the Viking religion, then you thought sacrifice again, and finally he was replaced by a great and loyal warrior who believed in the Norse gods, which introduced a new angle to it, and made the episode into a meditation on life, death, religion, and even what it is to be a man.

oh yea i forgot about the fire. But still the priest has been aging very quickly compared to the other cast members. Like when he first got there he was bald. Then his hair grew in then he cut it off himself. Now he has old man hair and facial hair like he aged 5-10yrs. He went looking like a 25yr old priest to a 35yr old.

I do like how he's looking more and more like the Vikings instead of them doing a cut scene where he suddenly decides to change his clothes to make it easier on the producers.

I like it. They speed up and sometimes skip things as need be. Last episode the wife had a miscarriage. They could have spent an episode dramatizing what that meant, tears blah blah. They skip over it and show the emotional impact with her prayer. It gives the show a more broad sweeping feel to it rather than a soap opera set in Vikingland like the walking dead is.

I thought that the priest was gonna become a Viking from the jump. I see him fighting In the shield wall before this is over. Also I think flokie would make a great joker.

The old guy wanted to go to Valhalla first and foremost, and he had already been a proven warrior before his last campaign. I assume Leif would also want to go to Valhalla, so if the gods appreciated being a great warrior despite not dying in battle in Leif's case, they would have done the same with the old timer. The fact that such a death is for a noble cause wouldn't hurt either. As a king Ragnar could have channeled him in this direction. As for Athelstan, the problem with him was basically more that he was still a Christian than being reluctant, as I understood it.

Overall I think a criminal sentenced to death given the opportunity to go down in a more honourable way would have been a good choice, satisfactory for everyone involved. Like the guy whose head was chopped off in the first episode. At any rate I don't find it very believable that there was not a single person less valuable in Ragnar's realms that could fit the criteria and they had to go with one of their best men in his prime, but meh. Leif will be missed though.

And other than Leif, the scriptwriters also had the tall blond guy from the 13th Warrior killed, in the episode where Haraldson sent assassins after Ragnar. These two were if not the best then certainly the most intimidating fighters, and judging from the fact that they were continuously accompanying Ragnar during the raid at Lindisfarne, his most trusted friends after Loki.

The sacrifice has to be worthy for the gods. Some criminal sentenced to death wouldnt have sufficed I would assume.
