Sepinwall's post is kind of eh. I kind of like that a show now is willing to be more like Seinfeld instead of glopping on sentiment in every episode like all comedies seem required to do now. That's just my sense of humor though.
I don't think the point was that it should be more sentimental, but that there were too many stretches where the jokes fell flat for his liking with nothing else there to prop it up. You might be able to get away with those stretches if the plot is intriguing or the characters are really likable, but when they're just vehicles for one liners, you need to have a more consistently high batting average.
