LOL. You are not the first person on 2+2 to ask/think this, but no, I'm not. Never have been either.

I'm just a mostly-retired geezer (<-- see photo) who reads history, likes to watch the occasional bit of excellent TV, takes a few photos and plays a little poker.

I think there is conflict within his philosophy but more importantly there is conflict between his moral and philosophical beliefs. For example the line he had about everyone on earth committing suicide is contrary to other stuff he has said and done. But I wouldn't classify this conflict as religious.

I don't think he's trying to convert Marty at all. To me he seems resigned to the relative weirdness of his beliefs and makes no attempt to soften things up or present things in a light that would be easier for Marty to relate to. If he was less depressed maybe this wouldn't be the case.
I agree that he's conflicted and not trying to convert Marty. I would suggest that the "dark philosophical ramblings" are (related to) what he is conflicted about. That's why he's talking about them. And I'd further suggest that existential angst and the nature of humanity and its position in the universe are about as religious as topics can get.

Sorry if I was unclear; I agree with this.

I think "philosophical" describes that triplet better than "religious". Existential angst is nullified by religion so I'm not sure how you can call that a religious topic. It does draw people to religion sometimes, as Cohle eloquently elucidated in the car ride after the tent, but seeing how sharply cognizant he is of this effect he seems like a less likely candidate.

I'm mad at myself for reading any interviews from the people behind this show. In one of the interviews Pizzolatto did he talked about how his own world view meshes/doesn't mesh with Cole's nihilistic vision, and it lessened the impact the show will have on me.

Yeah, I'll wait until after episode 8 for that stuff. I find that reading anything from show makers is tantamount to spoilers, because they inform the shows with their personalities so much.

Grunching

Thought this was a bad episode. Loved the slow buildup/creepiness of the first 3... This felt abrupt and much different. Not as enjoyable.

completely agree, easily worst ep so far. the projects scene was just derivative filler.
