Noticed this. 100% thinking that Woody's character is having an affair/going to have one with the court house chick

They never said it, but I figured they thought the missing child was also a possible past victim, since MM felt strongly it was not the killer's first kill

Re: True Detective......more HBO awesomeness

ok that makes sense just seemed such a stretch.
random missing child case from years before and they devote such time to it.
also the killer made such an effort to dramatically present his victim don't see why they would suspect a random missing child who was never found would be connected to the killer.
from what I've read about serial killers they are creatures of habit when it comes to their methods, so seems weird to make that connection when there is almost nothing similar between the cases n one body wasn't found.
minor gripe though, the performances and cinematography were top notch.
Woody has such underrated range (consider his powerhouse performance in into the furnace) and MM has really turned into a phenomenal actor.

Re: True Detective......more HBO awesomeness

Really liked the pilot. Don't think I've ever been this excited for a show after a single episode, though it's not a fair comparison to shows I marathoned. If I discovered True Detective a year from now, I'd be watching the rest of the season instead of writing this post. The ending of the episode (and the two timeline narrative, generally) gives them a lot of flexibility with the rest of the season.

MM's character shows such change between the two timelines; I think we'll see this case really battered him down. I don't think he'll be a murder suspect, but will probably be investigated for bad practices closing out the original case. I'm guessing there was political pressure to close the case, even if the evidence wasn't 100%. It's interesting to see the other cops write him off as a weird liberal Texan (As a blue-state lifer, I don't have a good understanding of Southern politics. It's a bit too easy to think of the area as uniformly conservative and pro-christian).

Thought the family dinner scene was great. The kids were funny, and the wife was clearly not expecting a man who, when asked what kind of work he's done, rattles off a list of detective assignments.

Good ep, from how slow it was going it seemed like it would be a slow burn over time in terms of the plot, but since it's eight episodes I expect things to pick up.

also don't think they were trying to be subtle about him ****ing that chick that came to the station.
Makes sense to follow up on a missing girl who was abducted in the same area that another abducted girl was found dead in. Some serial killers like to operate in the same area. I didn't find anything odd about them following up on it.

Thought the premier was excellent. I'm disappointed we won't be getting WH and MM for multiple seasons, and I'm not completely sold on the new cast/story-every-season format, but I guess a single season was the only way to get them to come aboard.

That was damn near flawless. Best work Woody has done since NBK and TPVLF. Same with MM. This will be watched multiple times, easily.

Pretty sure at one point they asked MM's character why he looked into the missing girl, and he said to just call it intuition.

In MM and Woody's questioning, only MM was made aware by the detectives of the newer murder. I wonder why.

I'm planning on rewatching the ending scene because this wasn't clear to me. But I remember MM just coming out and saying something like "show me the girl", implying he knows/suspects that there's been a new murder. The two black detectives are taken aback, implying they were not under the impression MM knew/suspected there'd been a new murder, but decide they may as well show him.

Ah, I misremembered that then. It makes more sense now. I guess he just put together that he was being asked about the original murder and his doubt that they'd arrested the correct person.

Great first episode. I am hugely tempted to let it accumulate and marathon once its over since that is my favorite way to watch although I'm not sure I can stay away.

They'd referred to the "Lake Charles girl" (the new murder) multiple times throughout the ep. I think MM was the first person to bring it up and said something about reading about it in the paper but I don't remember 100%.

Show seems great so far, I love MM's character. And HBO is truly the GOAT for

99% chance that MM is going to sleep with Woody's wife. There is no other explanation for Woody being mad at MM staying for dinner other than that imperceptible possibility. Plus the inclusion of other details like them having a falling out in '02, Woody obviously having an affair, and Woody not wearing a wedding ring in the present day scene.

What? He was mad because they had discussed getting Chris to come pick him up to get his drunk ass out of there, seemingly agreed on it, and then MM was like "nahhhhhh I'll stick around." Woody was obviously not happy about MM, who's already not the most sociable dude, showing up and being around his family in that state.

Doesn't seem like it'll be that difficult to stay unspoiled either. I don't know anyone who has seen it yet, and they're not d/l'ers.

Re: True Detective......more HBO awesomeness

At that exact moment MM was behaving fine, and out on the porch it was portrayed as being done more for MM's benefit than Woody's. IMO a more normal reaction in Woody's spot to seeing MM pick up some food and thank his wife for dinner would be "oh, maybe this will turn out okay considering he actually wants to stay." There was also the bit about Maggie lying to Woody about what they were talking about, and then MM changing the subject when she tried to bring it back up.

I don't get it, he was mad because he showed up wasted to a family dinner.

While I don't 100% agree that that's the only explanation for Woody being mad in that scene, I do agree MM is going to sleep with his wife.
