S4e6 finale. I'm glad they provided some sort of a solution to the murder mysteries but the episode was kind of a mess.

Maybe I missed things but what didn't make sense to me was:

Spoiler:
Would an entire group of scientists eagerly participate in stabbing to death a young woman? Would her lover eagerly choker her to death to top it off? No one feels guilty? Scientists are nerdy. No way that was plausible.

As posted above, why didn't they resolve how the tongue got there?

Why tape up the mouth of someone who you want to talk?

Why did Navarro leave without notice ? Is she living with Liz? Are they going to Hawaii (the cup you know) or something? I thought she loved her boyfriend Qavvik.

Why did Pete need his estranged wife to help and why did she instantly forgive him? She is not shown doing anything after the meeting with him.

Navarro wanders aimlessly in a trance out on the ice into a blinding snowstorm, Liz goes out to find her, should have drowned but miraculously Navarro is back to reality and right there to save her ? how nice

I need to rewatch S1-S3 to really place S4. It's probably wedged around S2 but I liked S2 more than the general public (and based on initial above posts I'd say I enjoyed S4 more than the rest, too).

Final two episodes were the strongest of the six, which helps it stick the landing more.

While the show opens with the Tsalal murders, the season was much more about solving Anne's murder so in that sense I think it gave a stronger conclusion to the story.

The finale closed out loose ends to this season way better than I was expecting, but there were a couple that I missed the answers to, maybe:
- The former Tsalal member who was at the nomad camp, Oliver Tabaq, disappeared and they kind of just ignored it?
- When they finally revealed that Navarro was the one who shot Wheeler, a baby cried in the other room. Who would the baby be?
- How did Anne's tongue get into the Tsalal station? Did Hank put it there, and why would he? It was literally the piece of evidence that linked the two cases for them.
- The whole show opener of elk running off the end of a cliff just helping push the narrative that crazy things happen in the days of night, so we can handwave a lot of these things to supernatural forces/Anne's presence?
- Navarro's connection to spirits is not really wrapped up either. Did she walk out into the sea at the end and was it just a spirit on the cabin deck with Danvers at the end, or was she still alive?
Good questions ..is it possible that Danver's step daughter was the baby crying after they **** Wheeler?

I too the ending to be be ambiguous about Navarro, and that the last shot was Danvers fondly remembering her...but I could be wrong

I just found out that Kali Reis is the former WBO/WBA/IBO super lightweight boxing champ.

No wonder her punches looked so good lol

The Wheeler flashback didn't seem far enough back for Leah to be a baby, given she was a teenager in the present. Maybe the baby was Holden? Anyways it just seemed like a weird spot to make a point of knowing there was a baby elsewhere in the house with Wheeler.

Imdb 5.7 on the final episode. Giving hope with episode 5 has probably made the backlash worse.

even The Watch podcast guys hated it, and they'll go out of their way not to rip anything. they spent the entire podcast on what was wrong and hoo boy there was a lot wrong.

I think it surpassed Lumberjack Dexter as the dumbest ending to a show.

pizzolatto has apparently been retweeting a bunch of anti-S4 messages

vanity fair ran an article under the tagline "MALE FRAGILITY" calling him a sore loser

you have to be pretty obtuse to see this as sore losing. no one in their right mind thought this season beat S1. better analogy would be someone took his child, lobotomized them and painted the kid's face in clown makeup.

5.7 on IMDB is actually a generous score for that awful finale. I couldn't stop laughing after the "time is a flat circle" forced line. Hopefully this season should put the series to bed for good.

I've long forgotten how to post pics on here, but rotten tomato has this season at a 92 critic's score and 60 audience score, which are both insanely high imo

Even Jo Robinson from the Prestige TV podcast, who discussed every episode in detail throughout the season, couldn't bring herself to pretend this was anything but a giant mess.

Night country is an incoherent mess and uses supernatural ambiguity only to cover for its shortcomings.

Read an interview with Issa Lopez who said HBO wanted her already written crime thriller, Night Country, to be a part of the True Detective Universe, so she tweaked it. It was not even meant to be a "True Detective" thing.

Also, the ambiguousness is purposeful. For example - answers can be either "real" or supernatural, depending on how you view it. For example, the tongue was either placed in the station by the Indigenous Women as a way to mess with the scientists, or, it could be the murdered woman haunting them.

I liked it.

After my first and second watch, I would have agreed about the ending. But I don't anymore. It similar to the ending of The Sopranos and though I was infuriated the night that it aired, eventually I came to consider it as one of the most brilliant scenes in TV history. As for True Detective season 1's ending, I think one's opinion depends on what show they thought they were watching. I got just as caught up as many did in all the Yellow King stuff and whatnot, but the show was about Rust and Marty. In that, I think the ending nailed it. It's impossible to think of what I would have thought about it had I not participated or contributed to any of the convos and discourse at the time. But that was also part of the fun of it.

I also think season 3's ending was better than S4.
I think the whole season set up the ending to be like Sopranos on steroids. This can be a good or a bad thing, seems like the type of story that would be very polarizing. Very little gets answered, many things are left up to interpretation. Lots of unreliable narrators. Its not my cup of tea as I'm a rube. I need that "whoa" moment to feel satisfied and normally wont be stringing things together on a pin board.

I guess a significant amount of people at least watched it, which sadly might mean more to HBO than the mediocre quality. I cannot for the life of me understand why critic reviews were favorable.

Gave up after three eps and absolutely no interest in finishing, spoilering myself or S5. Sad.
