Only 6 episodes in this season, that's weird.

The shorter season may have worked.

Rewatching S1 and holy crap Woody Harrelson is so underrated in this. I know MM delivers one of the GOAT performances but Woody is right there with him. First episode was an hour long and you are glued to the screen the entire time. Felt like 15 minutes tops.

It's good, has "The Thing" vibes.

That intro scene was absolutely phenomenal!

That’s as far as I’ve gotten so far. Had to come here and say that right quick lol

And that was the best part of the episode…..

It wasn’t bad. Had a moment or two here and there. I’ll keep watching. But I don’t think I liked it all that much.

There was a lot thrown in there. I wouldn't go so far as to say disorganized and lacking in concentration, but very busy. A short season probably dictates a lot happening per episode.

First episode was a lot. I'm definitely interested in seeing where it goes but I can't really say that I liked or disliked it.

Definitely liked the setting and atmosphere. Not sure what's going on though. Lots of expository dialogue but not easy to keep it all sorted.

I'll keep watching but it definitely didn't draw me in like S1E1.

I eagerly awaited for this TD S4. I love the setting and some of the characters. Obviously the writers threw in every sensationalistic idea and striking images they could think of into ep 1. They wanted to be sure to get an audience to start with. By doing that, they are way over their heads at being able to resolve all this in any coherent way. The reindeer jumping, origin of life itself!, a one-eyed polar bear in town, missing scientists, some alive dead guy in the night snow pointing to something, a loose tongue, and why doesn't she like Beatles music?, and, of course, why did she No. 2 take the guy's toothbrush (bad tinder date?) All mysteries that need answers. Aliens, supernatural spirits, bad dental hygiene are all hinted at here. Btw, is there ever any character in these shows who is not a troubled brooding mess? (Jodi is fine actress, but I wish they had prettied her up a bit more for this role.)

With all that complaining I still I liked the Ep 1, Grade A. Ep 2, lets go.

I thought the cgi was bad too. Then 30 seconds later it was over and I had completely forgot about the cgi by the time the episode ended.

Seems slightly out of line to rate the episode poorly because of 30 seconds of meh cgi that had zero impact on the rest of the episode.

I was disappointed when the episode ended and I realized there were no more to watch. Will be tuning in

Absolutely felt the same. Arctic setting certainly goes a long way with that.

The first episode was packed, I agree. They introduced so many characters and had so many conversations with references we don't know anything about. 6 season arc certainly has a part to do with that.

I will say I'm impressed with Kali Reis. I wasn't expecting much for a virtual unknown with no acting experience.

I don't think where she is coming from is that far off, mind you I don't pay much attention to RT scores. Moreso about the general "bros" musings on True Detective as a series. S1 set such an unnaturally high bar of expectations on S2/S3 where people just handwave those seasons as being bad (they're obviously nowhere near S1 which is one of the best standalone seasons of television ever) but they're still good. Better than 95% of network crap that people watch. I'm a sucker for TD type material though.

Looking forward to the rest of S4.

It has the setting, the great lead actress, the certain haunting and scary elements but in the end E1 still fell flat for me. I’ll continue but it just isn’t quite doing it for me and I’d be shocked if it ends up being anything too memorable.

So Hbo handed the reigns of True Detective to a writer whos never been involved in anything good and has never written for an English tv series. They also decided to cast an actress who is pretty much brand new to the business and cannot act as one of the main characters. I am shocked the writing and acting were both sub par. Hbo has fallen off a cliff in terms of quality shows the past few years, sad to see.

That does sound like a campaign, it's a huge reach to act like a brief CGI sequence (that didn't really figure into anything) brought down a hour-long episode.

That said, if you're taking over the show True Detective, that comes with the territory. Those fanboys are watching your show because it's True Detective. It buys you a ton of publicity, viewers you wouldn't have got otherwise, but it also comes with being compared to one of the all-time great seasons of TV. Gotta take the bad with the good.

Pretty good episode. The show is much better when the focus is on the case. I don’t really care about any of the character or their story. We got confirmation that Travis is almost certainly Rust’s dad.

The case is all that’s interesting about this. I think I’m going to bow out for now until the rest has aired and knock it out over a weekend.

Interesting seeing the comments about that episode being focused on the case. I felt like that episode was 99% character development with like 3 case tidbits thrown in there to carrot you along.

Spoiler:
  1. Guy has spiral tattoo
  2. Girl also has spiral tattoo
  3. Guy is missing from frozen bodies

This is fairly ****. The crime is grotesque to the point of farce rather than horror. Liz is a total bitch, evidenced by everyone hating her. I don't care about her daughter.

I think there are only six episodes and we are now half way through without much amazing television to show for it. I am going to watch the entire run, but I am not expecting a huge improvement in the quality.
