My working theory (could be wrong) of what happened in 1995 is that they killed Le Deux (sp? the bull **** lead if I want to make a joke), and with all the circumstantial evidence around him they closed the case, pinning the murders on his dead body (the tunnel vision Hart and others in this thread have spoken of). Then another body showed up, and all hell broke loose between Hart and Cohle.

Thought the same thing when seeing him in this role.

gotta be honest, MM's existential diatribes are getting more and more tiresome.

So this is how they convinced Woody to do some TV.

That seems plausible.

Spelling is most likely "LeDoux".

That's even more interesting since a quick perusal of a French to English dictionary gives these words as meanings for "doux": gentle, benign, mild, favorable, soft, sweet, and bland.

I don't know if that's deliberate, but LeDoux is a relatively common name in south Louisiana.

I hope it's deliberate.

Do we know what city they live in? I notice most of the locations they mention are around Lafayette.

Michelle Monaghan is really beautiful. And this show is so ****ing good.

eta: oh, and when MichM called MattM when Hart was over terrorizing his mistress and asked "is it true" - what was she talking about?

I think you're referring to her asking him if there was anything going on at work. She was basically checking on the excuse that Woody gave to get out of the house.

My interpretation of the phone call was that she was looking for him, and that someone was probably laying cover for Hart of his police buddies (why she asked it if was true). MM said that they wouldn't loop him in on something, cuz they hate him and he said he didn't know anything (even though he definitely knows Hart is cheating even he doesn't feel it's his place to say so to Hart's wife).

Ah, yeah, that makes sense. Watching it again:

Hart's wife: "I'm sorry, Steve Geraci said he caught something and needed help. I almost called the station, but what's the point, you know they lie. I gotta put you on the spot; you know if it's true?"
Cohle: "I didn't hear anything, but then again, I wouldn't, Geraci wouldn't pull me, he hates me."

I think the killer is someone very much like Cohle, and Cohle's going to realize that during these interviews.

I had thought it might be Leduc, because LeDoux isn't an Acadian name, but it seems that there have been Ledoux's in Louisiane longer than the Acadians have been there, and they are all over the place now, so LeDoux is probably it.

It really doesn't make sense for the police offices to be anywhere other than Lafayette, which is the location of the closest to the action LSP field office. The action is taking place in the parishes (Louisiana version of County) south of Lafayette, near the Gulf coast. The Fontenot disappearance, the Dora murder and the one discovered in Ep. 3 were in Vermilion, the bunny farm and possibly the burned church in Iberia. I haven't been able to locate the "Pelican Island" that was two hours away, where they interviewed the crabber. I found multiple Pelican Islands in La., but not with towns of 300, accessible by road, and with a crab fishery, so perhaps this one is fictional.

Haha nice. When MM was telling WH the highway directions to the bunny ranch place I was trying to look up where those highways are, but I think those were made up. (there are highways w/ those numbers around Lafayette but they didn't intersect anywhere)

I would definitely listen to a podcast where Cohle just muses on existence for hours each week.

Burned church is in Eunice, which according to Google straddles Acadia and St. Landry parishes and just northwest of Lafayette.

Don't blame MM for Contact. Very weak adaptation from the book. He played the character they gave him, which was a crappy composite of 2 characters from the book.

Also was interesting to see Shea Wigham as a totally different character than Eli Thompson.
