Does anyone know what that very first scene in the first episode was? It looked like somebody holding on to someone else and there was a fire or some **** in the back round. Does anyone remember this and know what it meant

I thought it was the killer carrying the girl in the dark to set her up by the tree

A) Literal interpretations of Woody's or MM's recountings
B) Composites of Woody's and MM's recountings
C) Objective truth
There was a review linked in H&F where the writer gave his interpretation of this, I'll throw it in spoilers just in case someone doesn't want to bring outside material in.

Spoiler:
“The voice may lie to you, but the image never will. So the audience can see for themselves where reality does not sync up with the story being told. And maybe the reason it doesn’t sync up is because it’s nothing nefarious. It’s the slipperiness of memory. It’s how we recolor the past with our own present desires and needs for rationale. And those kinds of explorations are the things I’m interested in and am obsessed about.”

Although I think the show tries to make you feel like MM is involved in some way, that is just way too obvious and I doubt it's the case.

What makes more sense to me is that with pressure mounting on them they nail this to some chump and MM knows it's not the guy and that somehow leads to the falling out with Woody. It also explains MM's excitement at the new body.

oh maybe he was carrying her away from the church after setting it on fire

I thought MM and Woody said that church had been burned down a long time when they first got there.

ya Woody said that but the killer could have been carrying her away from the church a long time ago. We don't know how long he had her before killing her or the circumstances of the night the church was set on fire. Or it wasn't church.. idk

just watched the opening again and it looked more like fields on fire in the distance, I couldnt see a building so who knows

People are getting too worked up about this. For ****'s sake, the real Woody Harrelson has looked the same for the last 20 years.

I thought the farmers found the body when they were going to burn some crops or something along those lines?

Do you think Woody can hear MM, or does he just listen to MM?

This makes sense because while they were checking out the body there was a noticeable spot on the field still smoldering.

I'm not worked up over it, just pointing it out and contrasting with the excellent way they aged MM

Wait 20 years and you'll see that WH looks the same but with a gut and less hair. They did a fine job.

I don't have a single criticism of this show. It was every bit as good as the first episode.

And it may be recently bias, but those boobs looked even better than Nick Sobotka's girl from The Wire.

He's not a fan of his in-laws and wanted an excuse to leave.

I agree that WW being the killer would be terrible, and that wanting to leave his in-laws place (probably to meet his girlfriend), is not suspicious by itself. But twice in this episode MM presented legitimate leads that each DID lead somewhere, first the bunny ranch, and then the church, and both times Woody tried to put him off. Instead, he wanted to drive around and pick up johns, as if that was ever going to lead anywhere. It's suspicious.

Awesome GIFs, thanks for that!

Woody knows who the killer is and probably took his girls to his church. That's where they witnessed the gang rape.

I get the feeling that the cops act more relaxed with MM than with WH. Also they interrogate MM about a week earlier so they should have a better idea about things when they talk to WH...

I don't think that either of both is really involved. However WH might be involved with some kind of coverup because the investigations came to close to (people close to) the powers that be.

This guy?

I rewatched that scene quickly cause I couldn't remember the details - he helps with a charity drive or something for the police and is the governor's cousin.

"Woody knows more than he's letting on" is possible. When they were driving around looking for the church he was the one to spot it in the distance though, he's not being totally unhelpful. He could just be a lazy cop who didn't want to drive out to Spanish Lake chasing down MM's leads.
