Although I didn't hate it or even really dislike it, I was kinda left with the feeling that i was promised (insert some awesomely delicious sounding meal) and ended up with chicken sandwich.

Maybe the writers overshot themselves. I mean I almost feel like I didn't have to even see tonight's finale. We already knew everything there was to know. The standard confrontation we all expected took place and the heroes lived.

Great performances by literally everyone in the series though, I'll definitely be rewatching it.

The last 5 minutes were character development and closure for our leads in their arcs. You remember the scene at the revival tent where Marty talks about the value of community and Cohle wants to prop bet on the average IQ?

one thing that bothered me was the virutual tornado or galaxy looking thing. guessing it was part of cohle's visions.

was super annoyed by cohle's heaven/hell and light/dark rant at first. but given his character and the extremist religion villains theme, i might be interpreting wrong.

Dog do you remember every week for like the entire series where people were doing all this crazy speculation about what twists were coming and what hidden secrets would be revealed and other people were all:

"Hey, man, putting all these expectations on the show isn't healthy, you're missing the forest for the trees"

Yeah. About that.

There can be a non-standard end to things without it being a twist, but the writer definitely set it up as a twist leading up to tonight.

This was a crazy intense short season, that hinted at a multigenerational satanic cult pulling the strings for a whole state. I don't think wishing we got more background makes anyone a nit or a bad tv viewer.

Na, reddit got people hyped up on something that wasn't real, had people looking for stars that weren't there. And they DID address the rest of the cult. They said what they had to say:

The biggest fish get away with it, and when that media clip at the end said there was no relation to Tuttle, you heard what you needed to. The little guy can't take down the most powerful men, no matter how dirty they are.

I also found Cohle's moment about his kid made total sense. He essentially died inside that maze, something he had been yearning for all series (but couldn't bring himself to do). Finally he died (or as close as it gets), and felt close to his child again, and he feels cheated because he didn't die. It's totally consistent.

You're just doing the opposite. No reveal or twist = good. That's what we call groupthink and or being a hipster.

This was an effin detective show with a ton of mystery, not a sitcom.

I had one interesting point of debate. Hospital room when Marty's family came to visit: My gf said those were tears of joy to see his family. I said it looked like a breakdown. Still not totally sure.

When you guys watched like, The Silence of the Lambs, did you get angry that Clarice wasn't actually the serial killer wearing a female body suit the entire time?

seriously, they set it up the whole time. You never seen Buffalo Bill and Clarice on screen together until the end. You know he's building a weird skinsuit from women's bodies. You know he'd **** himself, **** himself so hard. ITS OBVIOUS.

Tears for what he could have had with his family.

The overhead freeway shots were so Heat.

Loved when Rust said this is the place.

Rusts speech about the afterlife was awesome. As a new father it resonated with me that beyond it all love is the one thing that you completely feel is real in this existence and probably the next

wouldn't call this a woat show, but majorly disappointing. i would still recommend it to others, but with the warning that the ending sucks

I was not clamorimg for a twist at all. My disappointment stems from being intrigued by the cults origins and current state and getting nothing on that.

I rmean the ending was they get the bad guy and live happily ever after. That's like 1980s television. Not sure how this would be viewed as innovative. Whereas every second of every other part of the series was.

Overall this was a great show. Hart and Cohle go down as the best detective duo ever IMO. I just was let down by the ending.

This is best way to say it. Show just ended up being shallow and formulaic. That's disappointing. Still real good, though.

Just sucks since rest of show had so much depth to it.

Another companion piece is Take Shelter where the lead character also has visions and I'll leave it at that - it's much different and the connections are mainly thematic. Take Shelter is another one of my favorites. You don't need to have seen any of these I'm just saying if you liked the finale go seek out these movies.
