According to BBC

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/8449416.stm

Pretty good list, I like all the mentioned episodes other than "the monkey suit" which i haven't seen. What is the top 10 of 2+2?

Three eps from 1993... wiki says that's Season 4 and 5. Confirms what my Simpsons fanatic friend told me about the best DVDs to get being 4 and 5...

Just reading some of that article made me lol. Such a classic show.

I have seasons 3-5 on DVD and have probably gone thru them 4 times. My favorite episode is probably the one where Homer gains 30 lbs. so he's considered obese and can work from home.

"We're sorry, the hand you have used to dial is too fat, if you'd like to obtain a special dialing wand, please mash the keypad now"

Honorable mention goes to the outsourcing episode where Mr. Burns outsources all of the power plant jobs to India and puts Homer in charge.

Neither of mine made it.

The one with Hank Scorpio where Homer leaves Springfield for another "nuclear plant" is tied with "Homer at Bat" I think is the title...the one where Burnsy fields a softball team to compete with Shelbyville, but he brings in MLB players and Homer is the only employee left.

It's really hard to argue about the top two episodes the BBC gave, because those are probably in my top 5/top 10 in some order, and really, I don't want to have to choose which of my children i love more

Lisa the Vegetarian

These lists are always too heavy on Season 1 episodes. I understand their nostalgic appeal but they really don't compare to anything from the next 8-ish seasons.

I think the Simpson Gene episode should be up there somewhere.

Also agree on the Hank Scorpio episode.

"Well Homer, while I'm disappointed with your decision, you have to do what's best for you and your family. I'm sad to see you go. Oh, and Homer, if you could kill a few guys on the way out it'd really help me out"

As far as these things go this is actually a pretty solid list. Forgot about this moment:

Quote:
Mr Burns: "This is a thousand monkeys working at a thousand typewriters. Soon, they'll have finished the greatest novel known to man."

He picks up a page and reads aloud: "All right, let's see... 'It was the best of times, it was the blurst of times?' You stupid monkey. "

There are only 2 episodes on this list from season 1 and one from season 2. The other seven are season 3+.

I rarely find these lists are heavy on the first few seasons. It's always been my impression that the consensus is the golden years begin in season 3 and end anywhere from 8-10 depending on who you ask.

A Streetcar Named Marge is one of the all-time greats that was surprisingly not mentioned. All the community theatre stuff is gold, plus Maggie's Great Escape storyline at the Ayn Rand School for Tots.

Agreed with the flashback episodes too. The Way We Was and And Maggie Makes Three are probably my two favorite. The ending to the Maggie one is corny but pretty much gets me every time.

You don't think that 20% from Season 1 is heavy?

Anyway, some of my favorite episodes are: Radio Bart, Homie the Clown, You Only Move Twice, Fear of Flying, Homer's Enemy, and Team Homer.

My favorite episode ever is "Lemon of Troy", in which the Springfield lemon tree is stolen by kids from Shelbyville and Bart and a crew of boys go into Shelbyville to get it back. Homer and Flanders go to get them back, hilarity ensues.

Some favorite quotes-

Ned Flanders: Pardon me, neighbourinos. Some of our boys are lost in your town. You wouldn't have happened to see them, by any chance?
Shelbyville Guy #1: Sounds like Springfield's got a discipline problem.
Shelbyville Guy #2: Maybe that's why we beat them at football nearly half the time.

Homer: That tree's been in Springfield since the time of our forefathers. Give it back or we'll bust in there and take it!
Shelby's Dad: Bust in here and take it? You must be stupider than you look.
Homer: Stupider like a fox!

Bart: Eat my shorts, Shelbyville!
Homer, Bart: Eat my shorts!
Ned Flanders: Yes, eat all of our shirts!

Marge: This town is a part of who you are! This is a Springfield Isotopes Cap... when you wear it, you're wearing Springfield! When you eat a fish from our river, you're eating Springfield! When you make lemonade from our trees, you're drinking Springfield!
Bart Simpson: Mom, when you give that lecture, you're boring Springfield.

Milhouse meeting the Shelbyville Milhouse- This is what it feels like when doves cry.

ANd this amazing scene-

In Shelbyville, Martin and Nelson come across a boy making lemonade.
Martin accosts him.

Martin: OK, piglet, start squealing. Where'd you get the lemons for
this lemonade?
Boy: Uh...this is Country Time lemonade mix. There's never been
anything close to a lemon in it, I swear!
Brother: Hey, _nobody_ hassles my little brother.
Martin: Hey! And _no one_ manhandles the bosom chum of Nelson Mundt.
Spring forth, burly protector, and save me!
[long pause; the kids look around]
Nelson: Aw, jeez. I never hang out with him, normally.
[throws the brother off Martin]
Martin: [skipping around Nelson and singing]
Hark to the tale of Nelson,
and the boy he loved so dear.
[Nelson takes a swipe at him but misses]
They remained the best of friends
For years and years and years.

Just an amazing episode.

While admittedly I've stopped following the show in the last few years, I was a religious watcher for the 1st 15 seasons or so:

The Lemon Tree episode is easily in my top 3. So many lol moments (many of which were already listed, but also the stuff with Nelson and Martin was gold).

My personal favorite is the one with the film festival with Jay Sherman. I don't think I've ever laughed harder at a Simpsons joke then when Hans Moleman said, "I was saying boo-urns." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRT70ceAMQ4

Also, the one where Homer, Apu, Moe, and Burns form a bowling team is another old gem.

Frankly, this thread is getting me in the mood to watch old episodes all day.

God how the hell is the Grimey episode not on that list? That is just fantastic all around.

this all explains so much - homer's enemy is in my top 5 most hated simpsons episodes.

it's a pretty good list, without 'last exit to springfield' it'd be a joke. i think 'cape feare' is kinda terrible, but w/e.

On the DVD commentaries the writers/animators say that Homer's Enemy is either on people's most loved or most hated list. It's definitely one of my favourites, I think it's phenomenal. Almost everything that Homer says in that episode is fantastic. Plus it contains one of my favourite ever lines:

Grimes: Yeah, but look at the size of this place! I live in a
single room above a bowling alley and below another bowling
alley.

Yeah I think "Homer's Enemy" is up there with the Principal Skinner being an impostor one as far as most hated episodes go.

"Homer's Enemy" has a unique rhythm and feel that is different from any other episode, imo. That's why it is polarizing.

So many good episodes in the 1st 8 or so seasons.

A few of my favourites yet to be mentioned are..

Dancing Homer
Bart the Daredevil
When Flanders failed
Flaming Moes
The Otto show
Homers Brother episodes
Whacking day
Homers barbourshop Quartet
The baseball one (where mr Burns recruits the pros)

I really don't dislike any episode in the early years.

Frank Grimes episode was awesome. Mr. Burns hiring the dog to be the VP then later you hear it barking at Grimes haha.

Pretty good list imo.
Monorail is my alltime favorite. "Is it Batman?", "No, he's a scientist", "Batman's a scientist"

Best part of the union episode is when he punches Lenny in the back of the head.

Chili Cook-off was awesome too. It's never a bad time to randomly yell "In you face, space coyote"

Does no one else like the New York episode? - I love this one, but no one else seems to like it. The montage where the Entertainer plays and Homer gets chased by the pimp gets me everytime.
-"And then the chuds came for me."
-"Mountain Dew or Crab Juice?"
-"The bus station is only ONE of the places we came to see"
-"Your parking officer is Steve.....McClosky"
-Not to mention I'm pretty sure this is the episode that had the debut of DUFF MAN
