Was it -EV fancy play syndrome. Top prize is 1 mil. Second is what 100k? 4th? When he mentioned it, I thought he definitely should do it, IF he had confidence in his fire making. It was the difference in winning and finishing 2nd or 4th.

How about this? Does he win if he keeps Angela? She didn't vote for him, but would she have if he had kept her in that 3rd spot?

To reason this out he'd have to think the following is a greater chance of happening than whatever increased % he thought Angela had of winning fire than Laurel had.

1) the vote will be a tie
2) Angela, who wouldn't vote for me if sent to jury, will vote for me with her tiebreaker vote.

All of this goes to show just how tough it is to predict how certain jury members are going to vote. It may be possible to get a sense of who is an overall bigger threat to do well vs. you at FTC, but to know how individuals are going to vote seems really random.

Without spoiling, is Australian version with Russell worth watching?

AU version with Russell hasn't started airing yet. We don't even have a date, but it is likely late July.

AU version season 3 & 4 are easily in the top 10 survivor seasons of all time, not sure why you would assume season 5 with Russell would not be worth it :P (unless you haven't seen 3&4, in which case go do that you won't regret it)

New Zealand Season 2 and South Africa season 6 are both good seasons. Maybe give the edge to South Africa.

The biggest concern with newest season of AU Survivor is that half the cast is "celebrity". Hopefully it's still good though.

Given your “au” username, I’m guessing you have a better handle on this than me, but I got the impression that the tribe with Russell would be more in line with a “Goliath” tribe (per USA S37) than a legit celebrity tribe (i.e. definitely not as “quasi-famous” as the B-List celebrities of USA Celebrity Big Brother).

In other words, instead of “David vs Goliath”, the AU version will be Goliaths vs your typical tribe of Mactors+Superfans.

Of the Champions that have been revealed I would say three are legit household names.

Mat Rogers played internationally for Australia in both Rugby League and Rugby Union. Shane Gould is one of our greatest ever swimmers winning 3 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze at the 1972 Olympic games. Steve Willis (AKA The Commando) will probably be the most recognised person by the Aussie audience. He was one of the trainers for our version of The Biggest Loser (which aired on the same channel as Survivor) for almost a decade and is most notable for being a real hard ass trainer with a compassionate side.

UPDATED: 07/13/18: Inside Survivor can now confirm that the theme will indeed work like the original Ghost Island concept mentioned above. When a player is eliminated they can choose to quit or go to the Island of Extinction (IOE). Players can leave at any time. There will be two chances for a player to win their way back into the game – at the merge and then around Day 35/36. The IOE does not reset at the merge; the extinct castaways who don’t win their way back into the game can continue to live on the IOE until Day 35/36 when the second opportunity to reenter arises. Yes, that means pre-merge boots could be living alongside post-merge boots. And yes, that theoretically means the entire cast could still be alive in the game come Day 35/36. It could also mean a player eliminated on Day 3 still has a chance to reenter and win the season.

What do you think? Has Survivor gone too far? Would people accept an early boot returning to the game that late in the process? Would it be enjoyable to watch people trying to make each other quit? It feels like that could turn nasty and uncomfortable very quickly. On the other end of the spectrum, the eliminated players could choose to look at their stay on the Island of Extinction as a free vacation, which could make for incredibly dull television.

Ugh indeed. That news plus Lynne S getting fired (presumably after S38 finished filming?) isn’t making me optimistic for the next 2 seasons. Hopefully the Survivor machine can turn things around and do something awesome for S40.

And at least the international versions have been killing it. There’s still plenty of quality content for us reality junkies who need our fix.

I'm scared for the future of Survivor.

On a positive note, they have been running for almost 20 years so that's a huge success in and of itself. If there was no need to change, I don't think they would. I am of the view that the changes are happening because there are less and less viewers, thus they make this seemingly absurd changes in attempt to attract more viewership.

It makes me wonder if they are trying to do something like last chance kitchen on top chef, where they make the eliminated contestants into a spinoff of sorts to boost web viewing. Seems like a terrible idea but we'll see I guess.

I've enjoyed binging the recent New Zealand and South Africa versions. For all of the complaining (myself included) in this thread about USA S36, for S37-S38 I'm liking the idea of waiting until right before the finales and then binging those seasons (super easy to cram 2-3 episodes at a time when you skip viewing the challenges). With the negative speculation associated with the format changes and Lynn S being let go, I'm thinking I might enjoy the show more if I'm not trying to chase that heroin-like fix every week.

Of course, I don't think I'm going to have the self-control to avoid the week-to-week of the new Australia season. Should be fun!
