Survivor: Edge of Extinction premieres on Wednesday, February 20th at 8PM ET on CBS. This season we will be playing a game called Survivor Survivor, in which you attempt to make predictions on who will and won't get voted off on each week's episode.

The rules of the game:

Each week before the episode airs, you must post your pick in this thread for any 1 player that you think will NOT get voted off in the upcoming episode. A pick MUST be made each week by the time the episode airs each Wednesday, at 8PM EST, or you are eliminated.

If the player you choose for the week makes it safely through the episode, you continue in the game. If, however, the player you selected for that week is voted off, medically evacuated, etc. you are eliminated. Players may only be selected once. The last person eliminated, or the last person with eligible picks still remaining, is crowned the winner.

Please post only your SS picks in this thread. For any other analysis or comments about the show, please post in the main Survivor thread. Changing picks IS allowed as long as you post them in this thread prior to the Wednesday night at 8PM deadline.

Spoilers of any kind will of course NOT be tolerated, and anyone who appears to be using them to try to increase their swag will immediately be put in check by being banned from the current season, as well as participating in future seasons.

So guys, I am VERY confused on how to run the game this season with this edge of extinction twist, which I'm not even quite sure how will play out.

My impression is that when people get voted out, they go to this island of extinction or whatever, where they can continue to live for a chance to get back into the game at some future point. If they ever decide to leave the island, then they are officially out of the game.

I also believe that around merge time, all the people on the island of extinction get to compete for a chance to get back into the game. I assumes 1 person wins a challenge and gets back in, then the others who lost go back to island of extinction, where again they can wait for a chance to get back into the game around day 35/36.

I'm sort of the mind to completely ignore the island of extinction twist, and just keep the format of SS the same, which means if the person you pick for the week, gets voted, then you're eliminated. What do you guys think?

Also sorry for getting this up with less than a week to spare, the SS premiere really snuck up on me, plus the confusion of edge of extinction left me pretty unmotivated to get started on this

Yeah Id ignore the twist. the language in the OP is about not getting voted out. that's all that should matter.

the question is. when someone returns to the game, can anyone use her? or is she off the board? can you only pick her if you havent used her yet?

Ignore the twist, however I'd say if someone is voted out to Extinction Island AND comes back to the game in the same episode (or dual ep if its same night) then they shouldn't count as eliminated.

Basically if I pick Jane and she starts the viewing day in the game and ends the viewing day in the game, I shouldn't be eliminated....even if she went to Extinction at some point during that window.

Other wrinkle: If I've never picked Joe, and he is voted off to Extinction, then comes back in the game a few eps later, am I allowed to pick him?

Agree with ignoring the twist. Probably easiest if u don’t allow a player to be picked after they’ve been voted out once. Ie if Joe is voted out and u haven’t picked him, you can’t pick him if he reenters. Should lead to some complex end game scenarios in this.

I reckon if they are ever voted out to EI whilst you have them selected, you're out. You cannot pick someone whilst they start the episode on EI. If someone returns to the game from EI, and you haven't selected them, you can.

I agree with ignoring, but I also think you shouldn’t be allowed to pick players who return from EI. The main advantage in regular SS is when you pick someone who then gets voted out in a later episode — that is how the standings are organized. The whole strategy is to pick people before they get voted out.

So if you were able to pick people after they come back, it takes away that reward and actually punishes you for having already picked them. I think it’s much easier and much more in tune with the spirit of SS to say as soon as someone gets voted out at all, they are eliminated from ever being picked again.

Or I guess if you are able to pick someone who comes back from EI, anyone who had already picked them should get to pick them a second time. Since we’d be treating it as that player’s second life, or basically a new life in the game. This way, you’re still rewarded for picking people before they get voted out.

This might actually be better just to keep the EI part live and potentially have more interesting endgame scenarios.

I also think you should reserve the right to change the rules after the first episode, when we know more about how it all works. Chances are, you would be able to make better rules then compared to now. So I’d say treat the first episode like normal, and whoever picks the person who gets voted out is eliminated. And then we all understand that you will finalize the rules prior to the second episode.

I can't really think of a scenario where this would come into play, unless it was a 2-hour episode or something, but sure, you won't be eliminated.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. So yeah, if the person you select during the week gets voted out, you are eliminated. I thought about whether we should allow people who win their way back from EI to be eligible to get picked. I do sort of want to incorporate the EI theme in some way, however I don't want to reward people who didn't pick the EI returnee originally by giving them a 2nd chance to pick the person.

Example: Joe gets voted out pre-merge, and person A managed to pick Joe prior to his elimination, but person B didn't. Then Joe wins the EI challenge and gets back into the game at the merge, and I let Joe get picked again. That would only help person B, when it's actually person A that I feel like should get rewarded for having already picked Joe.

How about this: I want to incentivize people to try to be risky with their picks, and pick people who they think might win the EI challenges. So in the example I posted above, anyone who has picked Joe before he got voted out, would get a SECOND CHANCE to pick Joe if he re-enters the game. ONLY people who picked Joe before he got sent to EI will get the bonus chance to pick him again, NOT everyone.

My thought was that this would encourage a very high-risk, high-reward approach to picks this season. To have a chance to get the bonus pick, you want to have as many people on EI that you've already picked, but you also have to be careful not to pick them on the week they go home, or you'll be instantly eliminated. Also letting the winner of the EI duels get picked for a 2nd time would really add a lot of drama/sweat to the EI duels.

Thoughts? If you guys don't like the bonus pick idea and want to just ignore EI completely, we can do that too.

Yep, see my recent post. I was just thinking about all this. I definitely don't want to reward people who didn't pick the EI returnee yet. I also thought about letting the EI returnee get picked by EVERYONE.

But then....I thought maybe ONLY the people who picked the RI returnee already, get a 2nd chance to pick them again. Really doubling down on that advantage/EI winner. Incentivizes risky picks.

the only problem with the bonus pick is that those people already have an advantage. they already have 1 pick extra in the field, and now they'd have 2. so i think that would be too much

i think either everyone should get to pick them again and just treat it as a new life/player in the game, or no one should.

also i have to disagree about someone getting voted out and coming back in the same episode. if you pick someone who gets voted out, you should lose. its hard enough to eliminate people as it is. and this will come up in any of the EI episodes where someone comes back, because they could easily do the elimination first and then the challenge

alternate idea for EI:

we could create a subset of EI within the game, where you pick one survivor player for SS, but also have the option of picking one EI player (each episode). if that player survives the episode without leaving, then you will be able to use that player if they make it back into the game. if they don't survive the episode, you forfeit any EI players

this depends how it works, like if people will actually leave EI at all, or if they'll all stay the whole time. but it could make it so you have to 'earn' the right to have someone come back from EI. you could try to pick everyone who goes there, but eventually someone might quit and then you wouldn't get to use anyone

might be too complicated though. also it depends how it will work
