Re: Survivor S38: Edge of Extinction Main Thread

It will be pretty weird to see such an older cast. Only 3 people under 30 and most of them pretty close to it.
Not complaining, it's just weird cause survivor always has a bunch of young people on it.

I'm not as certain as you that game fixing is going on but there is certainly a possibility. At the very least I would hope that authorities would investigate Survivor (and Big Brother) to make sure everything is on the up and up (similiar to the quiz show scandals of the 1950s) .

That depends. If the producers made the decision prior to the game starting where they would place idols and at what point in the season they would place them then I agree with you. However, if they decided to place those idols because one of their favorites was good at finding idols that would be game fixing as it would be if they specifically chose to place it in a location that a certain competitor liked to search. Similarly, if they decided to insert a swimming challenge into the game because they didn't want a certain player who is a bad swimmer to win immunity that would also be game fixing.

This isn't going to happen. Different standards exist for game shows and realty shows.

So you're saying competition reality shows aren't covered by the Communications Act of 1934? How so?

Quote:
" The term “contest” means any contest broadcast by a radio station in connection with which any money or any other thing of value is offered as a prize or prizes to be paid or presented by the program sponsor or by any other person or persons, as announced in the course of the broadcast."

Quote:
"It shall be unlawful for any person, with intent to deceive the listening or viewing public—
(1) To supply to any contestant in a purportedly bona fide contest of intellectual knowledge or intellectual skill any special and secret assistance whereby the outcome of such contest will be in whole or in part prearranged or predetermined."
Quote:
"(3) To engage in any artifice or scheme for the purpose of prearranging or predetermining in whole or in part the outcome of a purportedly bona fide contest of intellectual knowledge, intellectual skill, or chance."

In b4 you argue that Survivor is not broadcast by a radio station lol

IANAL but Mark Burnett anticipated all of what you wrote/cited and pushed hard in the early stages of the show to make sure that Survivor was NOT held to the same legal standards as game shows. Read his book if you want more info; I think it's $0.01 plus shipping on Amazon.

This. I'm pretty sure that if a TV show falls under the category of reality TV, there a different (and more lenient) set of laws and parameters.

Chris was the obvious boot/biggest threat with I believe 9 people remaining and got himself to the end and won by interacting brilliantly with the others, through taking advantage of rifts, telling people what they wanted to hear, knowing when to keep his mouth shut, etc. Brilliant social game imo.

Every other person who was the obvious threat with a lot of people left who ended up going to the end and winning did it through some amazing streak of winning IICs and/or finding HIIs. But not Chris. His was all social game..

Never mind just watched it again. Jesus that's just blatant.

Is that type of thing common with BB?

Yes Big Brother love sto steer the game one way or another. That video is probably the most obvious riggage they've ever done. Nowadays if the season is not going the way they want they just introduce random twists midway through the season that clearly favorite specific players. Another common thing that happens is players going in the diary room thinking one thing and coming out having a totally different point of view about strategy. The producers clearly try to give any help they can to people who are good tv.

I'd be shocked if the same things don't happen in Survivor but since it's a super edited show with no live feeds you just get to see a very specific prespective that a team of producers and editors decided to put together having known how the game ends up. The thing with someone repeatedly finding idols in the endgame when they are public enemy #1 has been happening for a while now. It's not just coincidence and it's not because they want it more than the other players.

So as the season progresses, I would imagine they have regular meetings as to the best outcome and then adjust things on the ground to support that.

For example, this person needs to find an idol right now - do you think they drop them a hint somehow or if they just guide them when they are looking with the cameras? It would be fairly easy for someone behind a camera to point them in the right direction without actually pointing.

Re: Survivor S38: Edge of Extinction Main Thread

They obviously know exactly who the good and bad casting choice are very early into the season. It happens in every reality show. People get there and you wonder how the hell a person like that got casted. They know that if somehow a bunch if Gavins and Victorias all make it to the endgame their product will suffer. And when that happens they have to come up with something.

If Devens or Ben or Russell Hantz have been looking for an idol for the past week they know exactly where to put it to give them a huge advantage of finding it. It's basically handing them the idol by not directly handing them the idol. You could argue anyone could find it but there is a reason they don't. The production have their favorites and they want a better story line for their product. The problem is it's been happening very frequently lately to the point that the unexpected has become the expected. Hero is vulnerable, hero finds idol, hero blindsides someone. Rinse and repeat.

We're 20 years into the show. There's no such thing as integrity of the game. It's all a weekly soap opera disguised as a competition. The producers are trying to create the best drama that they can. If that means changing the format from F2 to F3 or introducing a fire challenge at F4 or giving people a bunch of idols or even bringing someone back at F6 and giving them an idol so be it. I'm sure if you asked them if the season had played exactly the same but instead of Chris winning the game, fan favorite Joey amazing had won they would have said that's their best season ever.
