Re: Survivor: Nicaragua

I wanted to see what classic Boston Rob was like so I started watching Marquesas. Rob was pretty much the king of that season but he ended up just speaking his mind to everybody and getting kicked off at the merge. Is the rest of the season still worth watching? Most of the other people are pretty lame compared to Rob imo.

Re: Survivor: Nicaragua

Well, without giving too much away, there's a lot of action down the stretch in Marquesas. Some stuff that had never happened before up to that point in Survivor history, and at least one thing that's never happened since. My vote would be: Worth Watching

Also, Kathy is ****ing awesome so don't ****ing try to say that everyone sucks compared to Rob. You badmouth Kathy, and all of a sudden the profanity filter gets a workout from my posts.

Re: Survivor: Nicaragua

I'm surprised at the amount of people that are saying she was a terrible player. From what I recall, I thought she was aware of all the problems she was facing due to day 1, and made constant efforts to fix it to no avail (fixing up camp/building shelter for everyone while they trekked rather than idol hunt for one).

I'm only on episode 3 of the rewatch, so I'm looking forward to seeing if my recall is just off or if I can find some examples of why I originally thought different.

Re: Survivor: Nicaragua

Those problems are obvious to pretty much everyone though. Can you give an example of something she said that makes you think she was a decent player? She was used by Brendan as an extra vote, was blindsided when he left, and was so hated that she could prevent herself going home at F7 even though it was clearly terrible for all of the Timbiras.

Re: Survivor: Nicaragua

As I rewatch if I see anything I'll be sure to mention it in the thread. I have not watched it since the first time, so I don't have any specific examples from throughout the season yet. I'm just basing my comments on what I recall thinking as I watched it the first time.

I also agree that the problems caused by the isolated helicopter ride are obvious to pretty much everyone. I was just saying that once that happened, she seemed to recognize the issue and play that situation pretty much optimally:

1. Chose to built shelter/camp rather than idol hunt while she was there alone in an effort to lessen the resentment of the others. Now it doesn't look like they did all the work; they carried supplies while she built camp/shelter.

2. She attached herself to Brendan - one of the young fit guys who had near zero chance of going home early - and shared the idol clue with him. She was clearly on the outs, but gave one of the main players of her tribe a reason to keep her around - be it loyalty, an extra vote, help with the idol, whatever.

While neither thing is all that impressive and pretty much anyone with a brain would realize they are the correct steps to take once you found yourself in that position, the fact that she chooses the correct option and then picks the best possible person to try and get close to in an effort to stick around makes me think she had the right idea.

Again, it is entirely possible that during rewatch I'm going to change my stance on it. Tocantins was the 2nd season I watched (Friend hooked me on Somoa and I watched seasons going backwards) so my thoughts of what entails having "a good head on her shoulders" might (well, prolly should) be vastly different now. It's definitely given me a solid reason to rewatch and I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out again. I'll bump the thread when I see something good or something awful by her.

lol nice Kathy rant. She is pretty cool I guess, but everyone just kind of pale in comparison to Rob. And there's people like Sean still around that just annoy me.

But I'll keep watching!

Re: Survivor: Nicaragua

So I kinda shudder to bring this up because of how ugly the discussion got last time, but I thought this was worth mentioning. In the Thailand Reunion, Jeff asks Ted about why he posed a question to Clay at FTC about him being racist/making racist remarks. Ted tells Jeff that it was because of a conversation he'd had with Helen after she got voted out where she told Ted that Clay had made some racist comment. So I guess, some more evidence that the jury members weren't sequestered during the early seasons (although it's obviously possible they just had that conversation on the walk in or while at TC or whatever). Anyway, just thought it was interesting.

Re: Survivor: Nicaragua

So just continuing my way through the seasons, and am making my way through All-Stars (am 4 eps in). I guess I'm just kinda surprised... I dunno, maybe impressed at the lack of results-orientedness around here given that Rob C played twice, made the jury his first time around, and his second time around was the first one voted off from his tribe, and yet is still regarded as the GOAT. Like everyone else I was impressed with him in Amazon, but just seems surprising that he gets the amount of respect he does given his results. What's the common excuse given for the GOAT getting booted so early in All Stars? Just that he ran bad to get on B-Rob's team and have B-Rob be so clearly dominant early that he basically got to choose who went from his tribe?

nah just all stars is tough. people realized he was very good and other people played together etc. in amazon he was a endurance challenge away from sweeping the votes. just listening to his podcasts its very clear he understands the game well.

Re: Survivor: Nicaragua

Fair enough.

Also, I feel like when I read some of you guys lists ranking seasons, most people had All Stars ranked relatively low. Enjoying it alright so far, always nice watching shows where you're familiar with the personalities and interested to see how they will interact with each other (like, in hindsight, FvF and HvV would have been a lot more fun to watch had I watched all the earlier seasons first).

Aside from what VM said, Cesternino got stuck on a six-person tribe where two people were dating (and there were rumors that Boston Rob and Amber were indeed dating BEFORE the game started, though we'll never know for sure). He would have had to get all three other people on his side to not get eliminated since Boston Rob badly wanted him gone, and the other people on the tribe were too dumb to understand the situation. Basically, Cesternino was screwed when he got off the boat.

He's the GOAT for two big reasons: 1) his Amazon game is literally flawless, as in he did not make a single mistake and had an absolutely perfect boot order, and 2) if you were going to build the perfect player, it would basically be Cesternino plus about 4-5 years of age, and he was mature enough at the time to where the age wasn't an issue.

Re: Survivor: Nicaragua

Something that didn't ever register for me the first time I watched Tocantins:

For the "slingshot balls into the air and have people try to catch them with nets" challenge which pairs people off to guard each other, whos bright ****ing idea was it to pair Sierra with JT. Like wtf

(suppose its just random but still an lol mismatch)

edit: she actually does a pretty good job once she stops trying to score and instead tries to essentially choke jt out standing up lol

Re: Survivor: Nicaragua

Man, just continuing through All-Stars... I'm like midway through Ep11 right now, so first ep after/during the merge, and I have to say, B-Rob is playing pretty ****ing awesome too. He's just managed to make himself a linchpin in pretty much everyone's strategy to make it to F5, and he also managed to make himself indispensable during the pre-merge time as well. That's pretty much perfect, assuming you can come up with a decent way to get from F5 to FTC. Just seems like he's playing it perfectly, with the caveat that there are going to be at least a handful of people on the jury who consider themselves burned by him. But that was pretty much unavoidable given the Amber tribe-switch snafu.

Re: Survivor: Nicaragua

I'm also in re-watch mode, but apparently not as committed as mlagoo, who has burned right past me.

I'm still in Pearl Islands, and noticed something interesting. At the first individual reward challenge, Rupert won, and Jeff said "You can pick someone to go with, or you can give your reward away and that person will get to pick someone to go with them". Was this a short-lived thing? I didn't even remember it happening then, and I sure don't ever hear Jeff announce it as an option now. I think many of us are in agreement that it's best NOT to go on a reward, not to have to pick people / piss others off, and to be in the majority back at camp. While he surely wasn't thinking in those terms, Rupert made the right decision and gave it up Burton, who took loLil.

Boston Rob's overall performance in All-Stars is the greatest in Survivor history AINEC

Re: Survivor: Nicaragua

Random thought about Amazon: was Butch a credible jury threat? If so, a better option for Rob C. might have been to boot Matt at F4 (Matt votes for Butch, Butch votes for Rob, Rob + Jenna vote for Matt). Jenna is forced to take Rob and loses, and Butch probably takes Rob anyway (hard to pick a winner here imo).

Re: Survivor: Nicaragua

Cesternino beats anyone he faces, so he just needs to get to FTC. There's no reason for Butch to take Cesternino if he wins immunity, but Matt would have, and Matt was a bigger threat to win an endurance challenge, so it seems like a no-brainer to me.

i think Butch was a far bigger threat to win the game then Matt though, and Jenna/Rob combined were almost a lock to beat Butch in the FIC.

But if Jenna wins, Cesternino goes home (as it happened IRL). Beating Butch is irrelevant; Cesternino's ideal F3 scenario is him and Matt competing against Butch/Jenna.

the crux of the argument is that Butch is not as easy of a beat at FTC as Matt and therefore Rob is more likely to be taken if Jenna wins.

This certainly is debatable, but i think there's some merit to it.
