thoughts on Yau-Man?

I had heard a lot of good things about Yau-Man prior to finally getting around to his season. While he did seem like a pretty solid guy and above average strategically, I wasn't overly impressed. My expectations were probably too high going into it with the comments I had heard though.

Arguably one of the five best players to ever play the game imo. I think you could even argue top three.

I'd say top 5, but not crafty enough. That's what separates him from the Cirie/Parvati's of the world who ousted him in Micronesia.

His snuff out of Stacy in Fiji was amazing though.

My thoughts

* For those who really enjoy the editing, this was pretty weird. This season was 1 million % all about Colby. Maybe there just wasn't another story to tell, but it was ALL about him, and to then have him fall short was just weird.
* Production value went up DRAMATICALLY. They realized after $1 that they had something big on their hand, and upped the ante big time.
* I really liked the challenges this season. Two that stood out on my mind were the introduction of the "stand on a pole for 10+ hours" and also the "build a fire, then fill a leaking bucket on the other side with water".
* As much as I enjoyed the challenges, the FIC was the WOAT. A Q&A about your fallen comrades, especially random BS from their casting sheets, is just such fail. Hand on the idol, or stand on a pole. Those should be the only two FIC EVER.
* I HATE HATE HATE the vote tiebreaker that came into play twice in this season. I'm not a fan of having a tie vote come down to previous votes, and it played a HUGE role in this season.
* Holy **** - I forgot how harsh the elements were in this one. Having to give up shelter because they poorly rationed their food, and then to have a flood wipe out your camp a couple days later? Brutal!
* Mike falling in the fire was a real game changer, obviously. If he doesn't fall in the fire, and Kucha wins the last tribal immunity challenge, we don't remember Tina AT ALL, and Colby would have needed an even bigger immunity run than he had to have a chance.

Off to $3 AFRICA - which I remember very little about, except the winner. I'm hoping that it brings about a little actual game play, as the first two seasons were along tribal lines almost the entire way. Don't remember if $3 starts to shake it up or not!
I like the idea of previous votes deciding tie breakers. It adds a nice twist since often the players didn't even know how many votes were on each of them.

I agree with everything else especially the FIC.

^^^

In the case of these two tied votes in S2, the votes were pretty much known. In the biggest pre-merge tribal, Ogakor voted out Mitchell over Keith in a 3-3 tie and they knew Mitchell had a vote cast against him. At the merge, it was 5-5, and Ogakor knew to vote for Jeff because Kimmy had opened her yap in an earlier challenge. Kucha was left to guess, and voted Colby, which was a stupid guess IMO because why would Ogakor be voting out their strongest player pre-merge (especially back in these early level-one thinking seasons)? I just think there could be a better way to break ties than earlier votes that are mostly random.

Another thing I forot to mention last night. In the S2 FTC, Jeff specifically asked the jury "have any of you told any other jury members who you're voting for?" - and they all answered no. It was a big deal back then that they all make up their mind on their own. Interesting that it has flipped completely the opposite way now, that the jury all hangs out and influences each other / makes voting blocs. I personally prefer the earlier method, but that's mostly because I'm delusional enough to think Russell stands a chance in Samoa if the butt hurt jurors don't have 20 days to commisurate with each other.

I actually like the idea of past votes: it rewards solid early play, and it would create a very interesting dynamic with HIIs at TCs with an even number of people (say it's 4-4 and you know that the opposing alliance has an idol; do you vote for the person you know has the most past votes? Do you anticipate that person receiving the idol and vote for someone else? Can you be sure that your knowledge of past votes is accurate? etc.)

I can see it much more in "today's era" of Survivor, it was just very anticlimactic back then.

Just make them grab a pole until one of them lets go. I loved the first FIC, just make it a tradition. They're trying to make them more fair for weaker competitors but **** them if you're weak then you should be able to convince who ever wins to take you if not then the stronger players should be rewarded.

i dont think anyone would complain if they made the FIC the one from the original or Palau every season.

Still powering through the AS season and find it strange how Lex goes from "You're still my friend, this is just business out here and getting rid of you is my best chance to win" talking to Ethan to "I thought you were my friend and you're going to vote me out" to Rob.

Can't wait til the new season

Yeah or the one in the Tom vs Ian season. I really hate these balancing ones they're coming up with lately. What I want is something only slightly physical that is almost purely a test of will.

For example, here's an easy one that would serve my purpose. Draw a 2 foot by 2 foot square on the ground for each constestant. Constestant must stand in the square (nothing can touch the ground other than the feet) as long as possible. If you touch the line, exit the square, or stop standing (no squatting -- so maybe add a rule that the top of the head can never be more than one 1 foot lower than where it is when the person is standing straight with the feet together) then you lose. Last person standing wins.

People give Rob a lot of credit for that season, but things probably would have turned out differently for him if Lex did the obvious thing and got rid of Amber. Rob basically luckboxed the fact that Lex made a moronic move.

The explanation is: Lex is a little crybaby bitch.

Rob talked Lex into it (in about three seconds), so I don't know how you can call that a luckbox move. Give Rob credit for intimidating him into it.

Once they left that challenge and got back to the Chaperia beach, listening to Lex/Kathy talk about how "If we don't do it, Boston Rob is going to be pissed" in the "I don't want to see that happen" tone really showcases just how much influence he really had in those 3 seconds.

Side note: Since I'm working backwards, maybe it's just because the game used to be different, but listening to everyone talk on the island, in confessionals, and post elimination, it seems they are all really against people "backstabbing" and are acting like it's some awful thing that they can't believe. Today's game has that being completely standard/expected by most of the players. Just an interesting tidbit I noticed.

Except they are still pissed when it happens to them. Especially, when they have invested a lot of trust in the culprit. As I think Lex had with Rob M.

I ran across this by accident, and I have a new-found respect for Jimmy Fallon. I love that he just completely insults Sandra to her face and is like, "Russell, you're my boy! You should have won! Sandra didn't deserve it at all!" The proposal of a 50% audience vote and the "flaw in the game" thing are both ******ed, but whatever.

Lol, he sure didn't say that in the video you linked to... He just babbled like an idiot like he always does for 5 minutes and communicated no interesting information and asked no interesting questions.
