I wanted to post something Survivor related but realized there's no general thread about Survivor. Each thread is about a particular season or votes for hottest, best, etc.

Given that who knows when/if the show will come back, here's a general thread to post all things Survivor.

I won't ruin the OP with my content post, so it will come next.

Enjoy and come on in guys!

Do folks who previously posted "S40 is the best season of all time" still feel that way? Just curious. Feel like the consensus is that, now that the dust has had time to settle, it was clearly a great season but EoE + how they implemented tokens was a huge miss.

Might as well rank seasons now (since we've previously ranked players).

Ha I mean that's how I knew about it. Would've posted in the s40 thread but creating a new general thread made more sense

S40 was not the best season ever. EoE and the advantages given to in-game players took from its luster. Still a t5 season tho.

seems like making survivor should be really doable. just test people, put them in isolation for 2 weeks, then put them in a bubble on an island.

I think it’s the production crew (and associated quarantine) that’s the cost issue. The show is already tightly budgeted (filing two seasons in a single sesh).

Big Brother rotated its crew every few weeks (in and out of quarantine). But that was easy when everyone was in LA.

The crew is huge. Dalton Ross of EW wrote a piece a few years ago that went into detail on what goes into filming just the first episode. Probably close to 1,000 people involved in that aspect of production.

The NBA and NHL bubbles this year were probably an order of magnitude simpler to pull off.

film the show with a tiny crew?

mtv had a similar a show and they used drone cameras, and stationary cameras mounted all over the island.

hell, put gopros on the contestants.

quality will drop, but it has to be doable

It was something something million.

Show was great, but was very different from Survivor. Much less focus on social gameplay & private conversations.

Still, just put cameras everywhere on the island and have a tiny crew present.

It's cheaper + seeing a camera once every few shots wont ruin the illusion, especially if that is the sacrifice for making it happen post-COVID.

I think the drop in quality from drastically reduced production detail would be more likely to kill the show than skipping a year.

i'm sure a ton of production went into building those gigantic absurd challenges. who cares about those? lose them.

Yea, this.

Losing the challenges will make the 2+2 crew happy, but we are clearly not representative of most viewers. (Not saying we’re “better”, just that our preferences are different).

The “illusion” is why the show has lasted 40 seasons. They’re absolutely not going to ship a lower quality product.

Middling season for me. If there was ever a season for longer episodes it was this one.

Instead, with EOE existing and sapping up so much screen time, the main game made me feel like I was watching the final two seasons of GOT - a rushed frantic mess.

I am also largely a believer in trilogies and don't feel like anybody should be playing 4+ times. Ozzy, Rupert, Rob, Parvati, Sandra and Tyson all ended up as pre mege boots on their latest outing and didn't bring any new character moments to the table.

I have way more interest in seeing another 2nd chance season than any sort of 'legends' season.

I think something like the following would make for a really interesting 2nd chance season with some fun dynamics

Men - Greg (s1), Burton (s7), Jay (s33), Devon (s35) Dominik (s36), Chris Noble (s36), Christian (s37), Davie (s37) Rick Devens (s38), Dean (s39)

Women - Kelly or T bird (s3), Sydney (s32), Figgy (s33), Chrissy (s35), Kellyn (s36), Angelina (s37), Natalie Cole (s37), Victoria (s38), Karishma (s39) , Noura (39)

Wow, thank you. I'd love to get a Survivor fix.

Is there anywhere to stream the Aussie version for free? I've heard it is really good.

You can do so at 10play.com.au but you'll need an Australian IP

I tried the 10play method, even with a VPN, and it didn't work for me. However, the episodes are available to stream on Dailymotion.

So if anyone has not checked out Australian Survivor, highly recommend. Working through Season 1 and it feels exactly like the old versions used to. None of the massive immunity idols or gimmicks that recent US seasons have had. And they are doing a fantastic job at messing around with the tribes without making it totally blatant or doing swaps/merges yet.

And the strategy is actually decent so far, nothing totally cringe worthy yet except for a couple of idiots.

I wish they would do normal seasons with 0 returning players, no meme celebrity Jimmy Johnson types, and no total duds who have 0% equity. They get to the island and hit the ground running. Most seasons early weeks are derailed by the 'big personalities' in a game of should we vote this idiot off because they are annoying or keep them around because they are a potential goat from week 1.

Maybe this is what keeps the show great but I think stronger casting would strike a balance between higher level players without all the pre-game alliance stuff that comes with returning players.

they very often do that. cagayan comes to mind...
