And USA does it again...they continue to produce top notch shows.

I thought Suits was pretty damn good. Never saw the whole weed angle coming. I think that's what made the show, the whole "guy leaving his past behind him". From the previews I thought it was going to be a "rainman" type deal but the fact that he was trying to sell some bud to keep Fay from Wings in her hospice care was a pretty awesome twist.

Best part was when the kid grabbed the suits and flipped open the briefcase, "now we're even"

Just finishing it up right now... really solid for a pilot episode. USA is pumping out some extremely solid shows.

I'm really hesitant about giving their other new show, Necessary Roughness, a try.. as their promos haven't garnered my attention as much as their other shows have.. but I'm really glad I've given Suits a go.

Meh, these USA shows are so light weight I don't know why I continue to check them out.

I've stuck with White Collar because I like Bomer and Dekay but I really wish USA would divert from their formula.

Yeah, breaks no new ground and those networks keep reheating the lawyer show with a quirk but no edge concept, but it was pretty good and as a fluff show ill use to kill some time every week when there isnt much else happening.

Personally I felt like the first watch of Suits was better than my first watch of White Collar... but because of your point of the lawyer show being done so many times.. this show won't have anywhere near the peak of White Collar. I can see it being as good as maybe Covert Affairs is right now... which I rank as a pretty good show, with some great moments sprinkled in, but I would never watch it if I didn't really like the show that is on before it.

Didn't think this show was worth watching, but I did just now after seeing the reviews in this thread.

It's nowhere near White Collar. Not sure if it's even comparable to Covert Affairs.

I like the interaction between the young guy and the paralegal. I hope they keep that in all of the episodes.

It has a Franklin & Bash feel to it. I have trouble getting into the lawyer shows, but I think I'm going to give this one another shot next week.

Tbh ive never given Franklin and Bash a second look.

But i do think this is potentially better than Covert Affairs, which is just so cheesy and flawed that i have to actively ignore its stupidity and be whatever the polar opposite of a nit is.

There were quite a few laugh out loud moments. The way the weed angle was written gives me some hope about the show, it was pretty close to reality, not overly exaggerated like it is when written into most other shows. Unfortunately it does have the legal comedy/drama basic plot line to overcome, but I do have a feeling it's not going to be too typical even though it doesnt have a whole lot of wiggle room.

I love lawyer shows (which is pretty sad since I am a lawyer) but I didn't like this.

I just think the writers aren't smart enough to make their characters come off as smart as they want them to.

It's a very difficult thing to write something that makes an audience buy that a character is more brilliant/charming/talented than everyone else, and these guys do it in the most cliche (e.g. "I'm all in") and least effective (e.g. I've read Freakonomics!) ways possible.

In other words, it's very hard to write a Don Draper boardroom scene and should not be attempted by amateurs.

Also the show is inconsistent. "Hi I've wanted to be a lawyer my whole life, also I am the most observant person you've ever met with a perfect memory and I've read every book ever.... Wait, huge law firms expect first year associates to work past 630? I had *no* idea!"

One thing that bothered me is that you would think that a prestigious firm like this would do at least a small background check on the lawyers they hire and see that he didnt go to harvard.

This is the one problem I am having with the show. I really enjoyed it, but the writers really did not think that part through.

i enjoyed the pilot very much.

people complaining that the lawfirm didn't do a background check... how do you enjoy any shows?

i didn't see the briefcase spilling open in the guys office and pounds of herb falling out - that was great!

Decided to give it a shot because my sister recommended it.

Terribly wrote and full of awful cliches.

Or it could have been thought of as a likely episode or 2 story arc.

And the weed falling out of the briefcase was funny.

As for it being compared to the writing of Mad Men or whatever, it's a USA network show! And shows as well done as Mad Men come along so infrequently, hard to compare anything to it.

Yeah, for sure. I think the much better comparison is to Burn Notice or Covert Affairs - and from what we have seen i think it rates pretty damn well against both.

Its never fair to a show (or anything, generally) to compare it to the top fraction of a percent shows. They are in their own league and should only be compared to each other in "Wire vs Sopranos" style threads.

Of course what KneeCo said was:

Which is a little different, but the rule of thumb is that shows aim for the man on the street so while a lawyer might think the way they researched the case history (for example) is stupid and completely unlike what they do now with the CaseBot9000 search program so long as it makes enough sense for the average person its perfectly fine.

Like ive zero clue what spying is like, but im pretty sure its nothing like Burn Notice or Covert Affairs, but i certainly dont know enough to nitpick it so i can ignore the silliness. Which again, i dont think Suits does at all where its not obviously silly to a layperson such as myself.

Not sure how I feel about this show.

First ep had a bunch of badly done introductory cliches (poker game, 'closing the waitress' etc) but dealt with drugs much better than most of what i've seen on tv. The dialog between the two main characters was good enough to watch a couple more episodes.

I liked the second episode after the high in a law office scene (ugh, so many better ways to handle that) despite itself.

Is/was there a good show on tv involving a protege and mentor as the main characters? I can't think of one.

Early plot device prediction - the drug dealers girlfriend will break up with him and arrive on proteges doorstep, almost certainly at the same time as protege and paralegal get drunk somewhere together leading to awkward love triangle.

I feel like the show... simply from the mentor/protege standpoint... is similar to Dr. Cox and JD from Scrubs. Dr. Cox and Harvey both are extremely ****/arrogant because they know they are amazing. JD/Mike are both extremely talented, want to do everything they can to please their mentor, but but still **** up enough to the point where their mentor needs to bail them out and teach the protege a lesson.

Saw this and thought it was decent. Like someone said, if you have time to kill, doesn't hurt. Only legal drama I've ever really liked was Raising the Bar though.
