a few aren't that great, but most of it works in universe as mob guys etc
similar to the wire, authenticity >>> proficiency

only a few spots where it's distractingly bad for me

Well honestly I felt like Little Steven was distractingly bad. Jackie Jr., Bobby Bacala, gay Vito, Big Pussy, Matt Bevilaqua all kinda amateurish imo.

I mean it's still a great show and the lead actors are so phenomenal that it's not a big deal... I'm just saying for a show this great there was a lot of crummy acting.

As others have said this is probably true of The Wire also so I guess with a cast this large it is bound to happen. Good writing trumps good acting I suppose.

After watching TMSoN….I don’t think this movie needed to be made at all. A few insightful character moments, some SNL-level parody and the rest of it just pretty…flat.

spoilers for TMSON i posted in other forum by mistake meant to post it here

Spoiler:

i didnt know silvio wore a wig, am i missing something from the sopranos here ? i have watched it several times never a mention of a wig on silvio, even when Ralphs wig is mentioned i don't recall silvio mentioned or anything like that ? obviously he loved combing his and keeping it pristine but i really didn't think not even once its a toupee

When Johnny (dad) goes to Jail and then comes out Tony is like a 16 yr old ? or so.
But what about the scene from the sopranos i think it's Tony's first blackout after the dad chops the guy with the chopper/meat cleaver ?
unless its another time he went Jail after the fairground arrest ? it says 5yrs minimum 2yrs but many years pass and i suppose its in between this.

i was lost with this guy Joey Diaz who played "The buddha" was full sure this was big pussy when younger and was saying to myself jesus he looks older in this than in the sopranos....but its a different character altogether. imo that isn't great casting there. Woulda been better if it was his dad or something seeing as they look so alike and same voices nearly. (thats just me nitpicking)

You're an idiot, maybe the Belivaqua kid or AJ, but you are wrong. They all deliver.

How bout Livia? I thought all her scenes were like elementary school plays.

I'm assuming you are being facetious here. I think we all agree she was fantastic.

Also tx no need to call me an idiot because I somehow don't grasp the acting genius of Steve Schirripa.

I got bored halfway through movie. I'm in no rush to get back to finish it, even though I consider the show the best ever.

The movie is a waste of time. It would be an okay episode, but it doesn't work well as a film.

Maybe it will be both. We still haven't seen a full story of Tony's joining the family business. It seems like this could be the first of multiple movies. I didn't feel the movie was a waste of time. I did watch it at home though, maybe I would have felt differently if I actually went to a theater.

I forgot this movie was released in theaters. I would be really mad if I'd gone through the hassle and expense of seeing it at a theater. Thank you HBOMax.

So is the man setting up a Sopranos 2 or a movie that takes place after the show ends? Doesn't seem necessary or smart to dilute one of the best endings of all time with a definitive answer. Chase must be hurting for money.

I imagine if Gandolfini was alive today, Chase wouldn't be saying such a thing.

i mean he literally did not die in the finale, so...

I think most people assumed tony died in the final scene. The real question is, who killed or had him killed?

Nobody who watched the final scene at the time it was originally aired thought Tony died there. It was only after someone did a shot by shot analysis suggesting this that people entertained the idea. But even then there was skepticism. Only after James Gandolfini died did it become generally accepted, IMO.

Somehow the bump of this thread led me to this podcast. I'm still on the first episode, but I think it's going to be pretty interesting. Michael Imperioli and Steve Schirripa, with guests every week talking about each episode. If they weren't so long I might try to listen to each episode as I do a rewatch of the show, but I know that once I start a rewatch I won't be able to keep from bingeing.

I am going to disagree with both the notion that everybody thought that Tony died or that nobody did back then. If you look at the twoplustwo thread from back then, you will see that the debate was pretty much the same as it is now.

To reiterate:

Baccala to Tony early in the final season: "They say you never hear the one that gets you. Everything just goes black."

Paulie to Tony (last conversation before the final scene): "I live but to serve you, my liege."

Brutus to Caesar in Rome, last time they speak prior to Caesar being killed: "I live but to serve you, my liege."

Add to that - after Tony drives away, Paulie just sits outside Satriale's sunning himself. Everybody else in the Jersey crew has gone to ground, but paulie doesn't have a care in the world.

I can't find it, but someone did a shot by shot analysis of the final scene. The gist of it was that every time Holsten's door opens, the bell rings, we see Tony, and then we see from Tony's point of view who came in. This happens over and over. Finally, we see a shot of the table, Meadow opens the door, the bell rings, we see Tony, and right when the switch to his point of view is supposed to happen, the screen goes black, implying it was lights out for him.

To me this is still a stretch. If someone made a move toward Tony with a gun drawn at that time, you would expect some kind of reaction from anyone in the shot just before we cut to the close up of Tony. Especially from Carmela and AJ who are sitting across from Tony.

The movie by any stretch of the imagination is terrible. I was massively let down. I even went to the cinemas such was the occasion of seeing this movie and despite seeing the 6.4 IMDB rating but still didn't think it was going to be this bad. I think what it really shows is just how reliant Chase was on Terrence Winter (particularly him) but also Matt Weiner and earlier Robyn Green, Mitchell Burgess and Frank Renzulli as writers. I think even David has said that if he is going to do a future Sopranos project it is going to be with Terrence Winter and with good reason as I really think he carried that 2nd part of the last season and made the first part of season 6 bearable.
