In the scene where he is killed, Vito is ambushed by wiseguys in his hotel room, where Leotardo is hiding in a closet. The wiseguys don't finish Vito off right away, however. Instead, Vito isn't killed until Leotardo comes "out of the closet."
It doesn't look like the idea that Phil Leotardo was a closeted homosexual got brought up in this thread.
In addition to Phil literally coming out of the closet prior to Vito's murder, there are other hints.
- Phil spent 20 years in prison. Tony and Dr. Melfi talked about how guys in prison got a pass for their behavior there. Phil may have had some self-discovery during that time.
- Phil's obsession with killing Vito could be interpreted as overcompensation.
- Phil also overreacts to a bodybuilding TV show just after Vito's murder.
- Phil kills (or wants killed) others who were released from prison at the same time he was (Angelo Garepe, Tony Blundeto). They may have known something about Phil.
He could be gay. Or, he could have participated in gay acts and was ashamed of it after his release from prison.
There's no smoking gun. And, it didn't occur to me the first time I watched the series.
But, on some subsequent rewatch the idea came to me. And, it seems to have a following among Sopranos fans.
