Subtle moments in The Sopranos that YOU only know. Subtle moments in The Sopranos that YOU only know.

The ending sequence of the Sopranos is peak all-time TV. Meadow parking the car was excruciating. Such a sense of impending doom. Editing, music, direction... just perfect.

72off, did you even read the link? Also, you're not as smart as you think you are.

Carry on....

To be fair, most of us are not as smart as we think we are.

Watched GOAT episode Whitecaps last night, and this was explicitly talked about. Tony was worried about the other four families reacting to killing Carmine, Johnny Sack was trying to say they had the connections to smooth things over.

Not really. I think people overthink it. Chase had plenty of stars whacked. Christopher, Adrianna, Big Pussy, Bobby, etc. He wanted to kill Tony off to end the series and do it in an unique way.

he just wanted to end the show, which he did

The ending of The Walking Dead: Season 2 video game by Telltale basically does [part of] the Sopranos conceit but in a way that's clearer. I recommend playing those seasons if you're into games.

Spoiler:
The main action has been resolved, but the final scene is tense with a potential new threat (or perhaps it's something good), eventually cutting to black in a way that makes it clear "it goes on and on and on and on".

To me, the cut to black doesn't make sense if Tony is still alive. To me, it signifies something dramatic just happened. Chase didn't even want end credits in the final episode but HBO said no.

The fact is still a discussion 10 years later makes Chase/Sopranos the GOAT.

Yeah I'm firmly in the Tony's dead camp. At the very least Chase meticulously constructed that final scene (and scenes in episodes the whole season) to strongly suggest Tony got got.

+1

Bacala, (to Tony early in the final season): "They say you don't hear the one that gets you. Everything just goes black."

Paulie (last thing he says to Tony): "I live but to serve you, my liege." Exact last thing Brutus says to Caesar in "Rome" before Caesar gets got.

Patsy was a background character you barely noticed for 6 seasons but in the last episode they do a lot of focusing the camera on him, often times for no reason. Like at Bobby's funeral, in the middle of AJ's Yeats speech the camera focuses on Patsy directing guys over to talk. Patsy also shorts Tony on his last kick, saying that his players are giving all their action to New York. Patsy also gives Tony some loathing looks such as after Tony is an ass about refilling Patsy's wine. Paulie also gives Tony a ton of dirty looks whenever he's not looking but is overly nice to him to his face.

Tony was more of a liability than ever to his capos. They were getting whacked just to get to Tony. Plus Tony had been getting more belittling, greedy, and generally detestable. And he was facing indictment.

The New York underboss probably sees this as a convenient way to take out Phil and grab the reigns, especially after Phil threatens him on the phone about the way he's conducting the war. There's no way that guy can consolidate power if Jersey whacks the family boss and he makes peace with them. At best, he'll look weak; at worst, he'll look like he was in on it.

The assassin walked through the door at the same time as AJ. In front of him, in fact. I think it's pretty unlikely that he tailed AJ if he walks in before him. Maybe he'd tailed Carmela. Or maybe he knew where and when to go because had made plans all day to have dinner at Holsten's; plans Meadow's fiance would definitely know about.

it wasn't Patsy
he and the NY guys come within inches of killing each other when Sil got shot
it's quite dumb if that's somehow staged in order to deceive the audience
(including Patsy continuing to legitimately run for his life after the above clip cuts off)

if it's anyone, it's Paulie
but even that's pretty stupid and nonsensical

Right, when Patsy almost got killed that's when he decided "enough of this bullsh*t!"

Probably Patsy isn't the driving force, he's just decided to cooperate with Butchie. Butchie needs to kill Tony to solidify his position (there's no way a New York family tolerates its boss getting killed by 'that pygmy thing in jersey'). And Butchie had always wanted to take out Tony and absorb the family ('redundant upper management that bleeds off half the kick!'). The Jersey boss getting whacked and the New York family absorbing the operation is what happened in real life btw.

Doesn't even have to be Butchie. There are four other NY bosses, we have no idea who they are or how they feel about any of this. And Tony has been on a rampage, Fat Dom, Coco, Phil. And did Butchie clear the Phil hit with the other bosses? We have no idea.

One of the themes in the last seasons of the Sopranos was you never know what's coming, you never know who's going to get you, you won't know when someone decides to kill you. Tony getting killed by something that's not even on his radar fits right in with that.

maybe

or maybe he just wasn't shot that night

Yeah maybe? But then you have to ask the question why Chase would frame that scene and multiple scenes in previous episodes to specifically suggest that Tony got his brains blown all over his family in the last scene of the series.

A Sopranos movie is in the works.

David Chase Revives ‘The Sopranos’ With New Line Prequel Movie ‘The Many Saints Of Newark’

Quote:
David Chase is finally ready to return to the New Jersey turf of his iconic creation The Sopranos. New Line has purchased the screenplay The Many Saints of Newark, the working title for a feature prequel of The Sopranos that is set in the era of the Newark riots in the 60s. That was a time when the African-Americans and the Italians of Newark were at each other’s throats, and amongst the gangsters of each group, those conflicts became especially lethal.

I always thought there should have been tons of Goodfellas references considering half the Goodfellas cast was in this show.
