Yeah, the Sopranos is not a series of subtlety, although great.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy would have 10x more subtle moments with 10x fewer episodes, for example.

Anyone who thinks Tony dies at the end is either didn't understand the show and/or incapable of 2nd level thinking.

I haven't seen the last 6 episodes in a long time but there was tons of foreshadowing hints that Tony was going to die in the previous episodes. The discussion on the boat where Bobby B. says something like "I bet you don't even hear it happen." was 1 example.

is spectacularly retarded to be honest. and i am not convinced about it one way or the other. i probably lean toward him getting killed based on all i've read about it, but i'm more in the "who cares, it doesn't really matter" camp.

Re: Subtle moments in The Sopranos that YOU only know.

my fav is the adriana/cat thing

she always wore a ton of leopard skin clothes
when she was meowing when playing a song to the music exec
the fact that she was crawling away from silvio when he killed her

all lead to the cat that tony brings into satriales at the end

thats why it was constantly starring at the photo of christopher on the wall, it was adriana reincarnated as a cat lol

also the wall behind tony
(notice adriana in the top left lol)

the pic of the big white house looks just like the house he saw in his dream when in his coma, where he saw his ''mum'' and tony b, two dead relatives. his hesitation to let go of his briefcase and go inside represent his fear of a/ losing everything he has and b/ death - two inevitable things unless he changes his ways

he doesnt, and dies ''infront of the big white house''

sorry im really bad at explaining my thought process, hope u know what i mean

Re: Subtle moments in The Sopranos that YOU only know.

I think that's a stretch, but I like the effort.

I recently watched the Thanksgiving one where Janice snuck away to the bathroom and came on to Ralph. I really enjoyed the way Tony noticed they were gone for a while (panning shot of their empty seats, shot from Tony's perspective), while all others seemed oblivious.

Watching that final season really trained me on how to watch this show. I watch the older eps now, and I notice all sorts of things I didn't catch the first time through.

Nice. The sort of thought-provoking thing I was looking for when I started this thread.

Unfortunately, I don't agree. The cat turned its attention to Paulie the moment he agreed to take over Ralphie's/Vito's crew, sealing his doom. The cat's about dying, not about loving Chrissie.

(Now you know why the cat is pictured above Tony in the Last Supper shot posted above.)

Never knew this until recently, but when Christopher says to Julianna Skiff "I got the 50 Cent movie down in my car, they were giving it away at the carwash," it's a little self depreciating humor of Sopranos writer Terence Winter, as he wrote the box office bomb.

Re: Subtle moments in The Sopranos that YOU only know.

goodfellas and godfather were obv a huge influence on the sopranos.

some of the godfather references-
-silvios al pacino impression
-when the guy kills tony at the end, he most likely goes into the bathroom to get a hidden gun
-when them two black guys try to kill tony on behalf on junior, he is holding a bottle of orange juice at the time
-after AJs failed attempt at killing junior, he makes a reference afterwards about how tonys favourite scene of all time is when michael corleone avenges his father in the godfather

What's funny about the Godfather/Goodfellas things is that many of the actors were in those movies, so they can't really exist in that world in the same form.

Originally they wanted Liotta to play Tony too, hard to picture. He would have made a fantastic Ralphie though.

The ep where Tony goes golfing with Coos and his doctor buddy and they ask him if he knew Gotti. He tells them how John out bid him on the Ice Cream truck at an auction, then John rang the bell all the way home. And what he really meant was Go **** yourselves.

Re: Subtle moments in The Sopranos that YOU only know.

Random celeb spots I don't think I've seen mentioned that are kinda interesting:

In "The Telltale Moozadell" when AJ and a group of kids break into the schools pool at night, there's two girls on the bleachers with a road soda and a cigarette, one of them is a 15 year old pre-famous Lady Gaga.

In the ep where Chris Benny and Jackie Jr. rob the Jewel benefit concert, the guy at the ticket booth is Perez Hilton.

Lots of good stuff itt, hope this hasn't been mentioned yet but one of my all time favorite moments.... The episode with Carmela and Rosalie Aprile in Paris, looking at all the beautiful scenery, art, enjoying the food, high culture, and waxing philosophic...and the immediate cut to check back in on New Jersey shows Silvio Dante yelling to a man cleaning the boob sign in front of the Bada Bing: "Make sure you clean all that sh*t off her t*t!!"

I can't remember the name of the town, but I loved that Rosalie was shocked to discover that there was a town with a French name like Belleville or Bellevue in France, just like in Jersey.

(Just caught the most recent Detroit 187 on my DVR, Jerry "Hesh" Adler guest starred. He had a few tense scenes with Imperioli, but all I could hear was, "The man doesn't have the money." "How could he not have the money??" "The man does not have the money!" I love that Hesh guy.)

(BTW, D187 ep also included a murder case involving a poker player, which you guys might find of interest. Suspects included a Matusow-type, a Laak-type, etc. Pretty good on a technical level, like tourney chips aren't worth real money, players get massages while they play, home games thrive even in casino towns, etc. Funny twist was the detectives' frustration, knowing that their interviews were futile because they're talking to the greatest liars in the world, and while they make their living detecting lies, they knew they were completely outclassed by the poker elite. Unfortunately, you can't write a poker script without basing it on cheating. In this one, the masseuse was signaling hole cards.)

Re: Subtle moments in The Sopranos that YOU only know.

Yeah, don't mention Kolb benched in favor of Vick, or Freeman turning into a solid QB after his struggles in his rookie season. Those don't fit the agenda of the story. She basically debunks her entire thesis in the first few paragraphs, then spends the rest of it being like, "but still..."

Actually the Eagles' story of the White QB of the Future being spot-replaced by the Heavily Judged Black QB is the perfect rebuttal to her entire argument. What a joke.
