when upon taking meadow to tour colleges tony runs into the rat. in the process of tony coming to kill the rat we see the rat talking to two junkies and he wants them to kill tony, the guy refuses and he threatens not to sell them dope any more. the guy seems like such a **** rat in that scene just scraping for whatever he can, knowing but probably too stupid to actually realize that hes ****ed already.

when aj says hes interested in event planning and t and carmela go to talk about it ts like whats events planning carm says i dont know tony says...its gay isnt it? haha tony your so comfortable in your ignorance.

Trying one last time to get thread back on track, here's one I've mentioned before. Again, whenever I bring it up in conversation, the person I'm speaking to admits they didn't catch it:

In Dr Melfi's final scene, when she tells Tony she's finished with him, Tony predictably blows his stack. It's a pretty heavy, dramatic scene, but Tony's final words to her were, "It's immoral!"

It's hilarious that he, of all people, would call anyone else "immoral", let alone the most moral person in his universe. But because he delivers the line dramatically, instead of comically, a lot of people miss the joke.

And my favorite Soprano's moment ever: when Chrissy decides that he Adrianna would enter the Witness Protection program. It's really bumming him out. He's at a gas station, filling up his new SUV, and practically stroking it like a pet, already missing it because he knows he'll have to give it up, along with his entire lifestyle.

Then his eyes go wide when he sees this trailer trash family emerge from the minimart: henpecked mullet guy, mouthy wife, four kids who look like their ages are consecutive numbers, everybody's wearing crappy clothes, piling into a station wagon that couldn't be worth >$1000, the beat-down look on the guy's face summing up his existence...

It was like the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come had shown Chris the life he had to look forward to, if he gave up his current lifestyle and entered the program. He immediately chose his money and SUV over the love of his life, and dropped a dime on Adrianna.

(They showed that mullet guy's family for only a few seconds, but the brief image told such a deep story, so quickly, so starkly contrasted against Chrissy's lifestyle...it remains my favorite Sopranos moment. And nowadays, any scene that doesn't have a narrator spelling it out for the dimmest viewers, qualifies as "subtle".)

I'm not sure which episode this happened, but it is after Tony, Paulie, and Sil knock off Big Pussy. There is a big party going on at Tony's house, and at one point, Tony goes into a hallway and opens mirrored cabinet. When the mirror swings open, we can see someone in the reflection... and it's Big Pussy.

The first time I saw it, the reflection happened so quick, that I wasn't sure I had seen it correctly. But each time that the episode would air, I would look more closely, and I'm positive that it is Big Pussy in the reflection.

I've never seen anything written about this. I can't believe that I'm the only who has noticed it.

Was gonna ask how the **** any of these you've listed with the exception of the ferry and egg on your face are subtle, the director practically beats you over the head with all of them, they aren't little things to catch, they are big moments that they obviously draw your attention to, but apparently this is your working definition of a subtle moment, for some reason.

I noticed this one. I watched all the episodes on my computer and I instantly rewound the episdoe to make sure I wasn't hallucinating.

Yeah, that scene was not subtle at all. You'd have to be an idiot not to realize what was going on there

Any time you use the word "subtle" in the title of an OOT post, what follows in the thread will be anything but.

Here's another one, but it probably wouldn't qualify as subtle. As all fans know, the discovery that Vita Spatafore was gay caused Phil Leotardo a lot of angst, and he decides that Vito has to be taken out. In the scene where he is killed, Vito is ambushed by wiseguys in his hotel room, where Leotardo is hiding in a closet. The wiseguys don't finish Vito off right away, however. Instead, Vito isn't killed until Leotardo comes "out of the closet."

What in the **** is going on in this thread? The only relatively subtle thing that's been mentioned was the egg on the face. JonHizall, I actually think you might be ******ed.

Can we please rename this thread "Your favorite Sopranos moment"?

One thing that always irked me: in Pine Barrens where Chrissy and Paulie have the guy in the trunk, at a gas station, Paulie is pumping, despite the fact it is in NJ where you aren't allowed to pump your own gas.

Some random tidbits of interest of Pine Barrens since now I'm in a Sopranos mood and any actual subtle moments that one might miss are mainly in the final ep etc which has been discussed to death already:

Pine Barrens wasn't supposed to be a snow filled episode, it was supposed to be bare woods but they got nailed with a massive snow storm and due to timing restraints (forced by the state for use of the land iirc) they had to shoot anyways. It became a real bitch quick because footprints in the snow made reshoots of some scenes really difficult. I can't even imagine the episode without snow now though.

All the shots in the van were done indoors, their breath is added CG and sparse if you look at it carefully.

IIRC, the scene where Tony laughs his ass off at Bobby was done at 5am after a sick work day and he had already seen Bobby in the getup, so for the reaction shot they had Bobby come in with a strap on and a wig to get the laugh.

The steak toss took multiple takes to get, I think Buschemi is the one that ended up actually nailing it.

Not a tidbit, but one of my all time faves from that ep:

Paulie: You're not gonna believe this. He killed sixteen Czechoslovakians. Guy was an interior decorator.
Christopher: Huh, his place looked like ****.

My favorite quote in the entire show and rarely hear it mentioned. From the last season, episode "The Second Coming".

I'm going from memory but, Tony is talking with Dr. Melfi and telling her about people he has known over the years that he believes are going to hell when they die. She asks him if he thinks he is going to hell, and he responds no. She asks him why and he says "Because I'm a good guy. Basically." Subtle, but I just loved it.

I'll go for some symbolism here rather than subtletly. Agree that YTF's most recent ones are anything but subtle.

In the episode where Tony kills Ralphie ("Whoever Did This", S4E9) and they are getting the body ready for disposal, Tony is walking up the stairs carrying rolled-up carpets and chains and weights, looking just like Jacob Marley (definitely intentional).

More debatably symbolic would be the bowling ball. Tony and Chris take a bowling ball out of its bag and replace it with Ralphie's bald head. A little later, a loud noise startles them until they realize it's just the bowling ball dropping down the stairs. Ralphie's bald-headed soul descending into Hell? Maybe.

Also in that episode, Tony operates a tractor/bulldozer (which Chris could not operate). There is a close-up on his fingers manipulating the levers like a puppeteer. Then on his face, he is smoking his cigar and laughing in an evil way. I don't know if he is supposed to be representing somebody there, but a possibility is W.C. Fields (whom Tony mentions at least once in the series), just acting like a kid in a toy store playing with his bulldozer while burying a body. Another is Black Pete (Mickey Mouse's arch-nemesis), who definitely emits a similar laugh while chomping cigars:

http://www.cbarks.dk/Billede/fil1942drafted.jpg

That episode is so brilliant. Fully half of it is made up of the mundane task of disposing of a body (no time pressure or any other "exciting" elements) and it's incredibly compelling. It doesn't need music or cheap camera angles to carry it.

Quick note about the finale here, violating OP's rules. One of the Lost creators recently stated in an interview that Lost would have a conclusive finale that wraps everything up tidily. He contrasted this to the "black-out" ending of The Sopranos, saying that the Lost finale would not be like that. He did add, "I thought it was brilliant, by the way".

The hilarious thing is that he clearly does not have a clue what the ending means or how brilliant it really is (if he did, he would be praying that his ending could come close), is saying that he thinks it was brilliant because he thinks he's supposed to, and in the process is admitting that Lost's ending will have NO subtlety and that everything will be VERY plainly spelled out for everybody. Sounds about right.

Oooh, his just reminded me of one.

There was a scene I can't say exactly, but Vito is in bed with Jonnycakes or something and they're talking and the scene cuts right before they go at it and it cuts right to a train entering a tunnel in the side of a mountain at about 60, replete with horn.

I lol'd

One thing that certainly isn't subtle in this thread are the douchebags that keep screaming that examples aren't subtle enough. We get it; you don't think the examples are subtle. I'm sure that if they gave out medals for having such a discerning eye that even the smallest details do not qualify as "subtle", you'd all get the gold.

The thread is obviously asking for fun facts/small details about the show. Is it necessary to crap all over a thread because it does not meet your rigorous standards?
