It's hard for me to switch between the goofy funny teen scenes and the serious themes. I end up fast-forwarding through the "comic relief" scenes somewhat. Just too much teen time in S3 for my taste.

And Dustin is somewhat annoying with his routine - and Steve, wtf is the point?

I thought s3 sucked. All the mysterious atmosphere from s1 is gone. It was basically a disney kids tv movie with a lot of nostalgia porn.

I heavily enjoyed s3 and am glad this show has not run out of steam (yet). I was engaged throughout and am interested in seeing what s4 brings.

Once you adjust your expectations, and know what this show is gonna be, then you can really enjoy it more. I liked S3 a lot more than S2, it was just a super fun, PG-13, 7-hour 80's movie.

watched 80% of the season last night, in one sitting.

- loved maya hawke as robin. didn't even know ethan hawke and uma truman had a child until this season but oh my, she's gorgeous and I think I'm in love. also really liked the character, specially early in the season when they were just hanging out at the mall.

- I'm surprised by the erika hate I've seen on reddit. thought she was the best thing about this season, right after robin.

- think this is my favorite season, even though I'll have to rewatch the first one.

- hop was kind of a creep in his relationship with joyce imo. sooo pushy.

- didn't care at all about the mike/el subplot.

- the mindflayer is a great villain and it influencing people's decisions seems very lovecraftian.

- mike's mom was extremely hot during the pool scene and it took me a while to recognize her. damn!

- all the action scenes with eleven were pretty awesome, I think I'll never get tired of seeing her using her powers.

- really really loved joyce this season. what a great character.

- do you guys think will is gay or just hasn't matured enough like the other boys? it seems like they have been hinting at him being gay since season 1.

- my least favorite scenes were probably the ones with robin and steve on drugs. to me every time there's this trope it takes me out of their world and I just see two actors pretending to be high. it seems like I'm the in the minority though because a comment saying their scenes high were a season highlight has 1000+ upvotes in the episode reddit thread.

season 3 power rankings:
robin <3
erika
joyce
steve
dustin
el
max
billy
will
science teacher
smirnoff
whatever

This seemed to me like they got the go ahead for several more years and they had to run back the Mindflayer to fill season 3. It made narrative sense but was also a bit of a step back.
I think eight episodes was a little constraining. Still no real motivations for what the Russians are doing

Robin was great. Really no idea what her accent is/ what she was portraying in this series. It sounded like a foreign actor speaking english but she seems to be American. Id like to hear her real speaking voice.

Billy way too low on rankings. He had a great series sendoff.

Paul Reiser such a big star you can only get him for one session of filming

It was ballsy to kill Hopper. I will not miss him very much. Hopper/Joyce this season kinda sucked. I thought Winona was really great in the first two seasons but it seemed like the tone of their story didnt fit her

There is a universe in which they write Murray as being the one to sacrifice his life and that would just be really cowardly, bad writing

Hey,

I just happened to watch the first season of Stranger Things something like two months ago. I instantly fell in love with the overall atmosphere and the story. It felt like a stephen king-like movie with sci-fi elements and some interesting character arcs and developments. loved the soundtrack, too.
I would consider the first season to be a Horror/Sci-Fi/Thriller-franchise which takes place during the 80s.

Season two is considered by most to not being as good as the first. I still loved it, though, because it at least in parts kept up the atmosphere of the first season. The addition of Max really made sense in my eyes. Some other things werent as good in season 2. But lets not get into that here.

So, what to think of season 3?
I started watching the first episode, and I thought "This is cool, they try to set up the atmosphere a little more colorful, so that the horror will of course will be more intimidating because of the contrast!".
(If I had only known, I could have saved myself a lot of time)

To be fair: I quit after the first half or so of episode 4 of Season 3. But up to this point, there was NO Horror, only ridiculous Sci-Fi, NO Thriller-elements, just teenage-romance-bullshit.

(After giving up in season 3 this way, I have read all the spoilers now, seen most important scenes on youtube in reviews and wow, what a brainless uninteresting story)

So...there is no Horror and tension anymore, only Bullshit, so what about the characters?
Hopper: I didnt see him in Season 3, so I supposed he must have been killed between Season 2 and 3 and his house taken over by a giant alcoholic man-baby with an IQ of 74.
Now seriously: I know this guy is still supposed to be Jim Hopper, but it feels like they completely replaced him with something completely different. Its like Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator 1 and Terminator 2: Looks the same, but isnt.

What about El and Mike and all the other kids? They just keep fighting and arguing over bullshit, like if they all forgot that they fought some monster from the upside-down together that tried to kill their best friend. Nobody seems to care about Will anymore, not even Joyce or Jonathan.

El uses his powers to spy on the boys? Why not use your powers to heal your mother or find Brenner or whatever...its like all tese things never happenend. Why do they not try to understand the upside-down further?

It all feels so displaced and disjointed. Nothing makes sense. Nothing really ever happens.

Another problem is, that every man is a useless idiot, at least. Some are even total over-the-top-*******s without any gullible character traits. Then we have a lot of smart girls who just save the day. ("smart" like they want them to appear smart, but they just come across as abnoxious like El, Max, Erica...)

It is so super-obvious that they either got new writers for season 3 or that Netflix put pressure on the writers to turn a horror-sci-fi into this pc-girly-romance-shitfest.

From what I understand there is going to be a 4th and even 5th season...I cannot think of any possible way to reanimate the story or bring this whole thing back on a level that is fitting for adults.

The 7th episode of an overall good season (imho) shows us one thing, I guess:
That maybe, the Duffers (or what they are called) just are a one trick pony that managed to write a decent first season, which was turned into gold by the actors and whatnot. This 7th episode is something I dont even remember much about really, like a erased it from my mind because there is no point to this episode.

Could any writer with a decent feel for story-building come up with this cliche-bullshit about some punk-outcast crew which look like people dressed up as punks for helloween, which then adds almost nothing to the story?!

That's a great take. I only watched Season 3 once so alot of the episodes are hazy for me but alot of what you wrote brings back some memory and especially your take on Hopper. They completely destroyed him in Season 3. So much that his sacrifice or whatever it was at the end(don't fully recall) became somewhat of a "Ok. I'm fine he's gone now." rather than me as a viewer actually still caring for the character. He was a great character throughout season 1 and season 2.

Watched the 4th season part 1. Thoughts:
Spoiler:
Pretty mediocre. It feels big and looks really expensive, but the story is overstuffed with too many geographically separated plots going on. Just off the top of my head there is:
- The Dustin/Steve/Nancy/etc plot
- The basketball team vigilante stuff
- The California/Utah road trip
- Going to Alaska to rescue Hopper
- Hopper in a Russian gulag
- Eleven trying to get her powers back
- A war within the US government

Some of the Hawkins stuff is interesting, but the hour or more runtime for every single episode is definitely not justified as there is so much bloat. Especially in the final episode, the Eleven's plot started to drag really bad. Maybe the part 2 will pull it all somehow together (doubt it), but the part 1 just kind of ends without offering any resolution other than the Alaska and Hopper's plots merging.
Speaking of which, the Russia stuff is so incredibly bad. I know some suspension of disbelief is required when watching a show about inter-dimensional demons, but the stuff with Hopper is too much even for this show. Some other prisoner smashes his ankle with a hammer and we later see him remove a bandage which shows his leg is basically split open. If any normal human being would be lucky to keep a foot after, he just grunts a bit and after that it's no big deal. Then he runs barefoot through snow and somehow doesn't get frostbite. Lastly, the prison he's sent to has these cells which have absolutely no heating and are basically out in the open. It can be assumed it's sub-zero outside and also in the cells which makes it a miracle Hopper didn't die of hypothermia. On top of it all, the prison guards are so comically evil it's difficult to take any of it seriously.

I fast forwarded all of the Russia and Alaska stuff. I was fine with everything else except the bullying scenes, just too over the top to me.
Spoiler:
I had no problem with 11 busting that girls nose open, she deserved it, but everyone was so stunned by it. There was 20+ kids/people humiliating her in a public venue.

Also, idk why they would keep 2 eisodes back for a month.
