Actually, it's Captain's Pike's thing. Picard stole it.

Re: Star Trek (2017)

wow! i loved it! i had super low expectations, but the lead is great! she is doing a great job acting, and her character is good.

the white man captain is a good actor. i've seen him in other stuff. the asian woman captain is terrible.

a lot of ridic fake stuff about the show, but who cares about that... i certainly don't. good characters and good stories are way more important.

i didn't mind the long scenes of subtitled klingon. it made it feel more foreign/alien to me.

the weird alien who senses death is a good actor too. i don't think i've ever seen him, but he's doing good work. his character is pretty ridiculous, but i like him anyway. i like the way he respects and likes the lead, but he still told her she sucks ass when she was apologizing to him.

You wouldn't recognize him from it, but he played Cochise in "Falling Skies"

I liked the character, the Volm (aliens who were also fighting the Espheni - the alien race that had invaded earth) commander in s3-5

Now that I've associated the actor, I recall some mannerisms and vocal pacing in Cochise that are similar to those of Saru in this show.

Re: Star Trek (2017)

our hero, michael, set her phaser to kill and killed the klingon leader because she was angry, right? if she had kept her cool she would have just stunned him and taken him captive, right?

that part wasn't as clear as they usually make things on tv for the masses.

Is the CBS streaming service the only legal way to watch this show?

Don't single out CBS. That scenario is pretty much SOP for all "free" trials.

Re: Star Trek (2017)

Yeah but this is the first time I'm aware of where they aired the first half of a show on free TV and then cliffhanger you and make you sign up for the free trial if you want to see the ending. Groundbreaking!

Re: Star Trek (2017)

FWIW in the British Navy the captain calls his XO 'Number One', whereas in the American Navy they usually call them 'X' or 'XO'.

Not sure how the former found its way into STTOS way back in the day though.

Yeah that is how I took it, especially since she was the one saying killing him is a bad idea and would make him a martyr.

Was a little on the subtle side compared to in your face network tv style.

Re: Star Trek (2017)

This article rage tilted me. I'm really not digging having to read subtitles of a gibberish language for 5 minute intervals

Quote:
“For me, at the core of ‘Star Trek’ is the idea that Starfleet’s mission is to understand the other, or what is perceived as the other. To use a word that may seem ironic, our approach was to humanize the Klingons, meaning we know a lot about them,” he said. “In a moment when we are living in a world where ideologies are so polarized and polarizing, what I did not want to do was just make them the bad guys. I was not interested in doing that version of the show.”

In addition, Kurtzman said that they didn’t want to pull what he referred to as a “Red October” — a reference to, in his words, “that great brilliant moment in ‘The Hunt for Red October’ where you’re watching the Russians speaking in the submarine and the camera moves in on Ramius, and he switches from Russian to English, and now you’re watching the Russians speak for the rest of the movie in English.”

As well as the device worked in that film, the team didn’t want to mimic it. “It would’ve felt very inauthentic, and I think people would’ve been upset by the idea that we were having the Klingons speaking in English,” Kurtzman said.
Did it feel inauthentic in Hunt for Red October? It did not! Did it feel inauthentic in Star Trek III-VI? It did not! Did it feel inauthentic in TNG or DS9? It did not!

Also, inauthentic? THESE ARE FICTIONAL ALIENS FFS! THEY DO NOT EXIST!

Quote:
So, that meant the Klingons were going to speak Klingon, in lengthy scenes which aimed to develop these characters and this culture beyond typical bad guy tropes. “We know that Klingon is a language that has evolved for over 50 years. People are married in Klingon. They speak Klingon to each other. Which means we can’t get it wrong,” he said.

“We all looked at each other and embraced arms and said, ‘Fine. We’re going to do this. We’re going to write long scenes in Klingon, and we’re going to ask the audience to read the subtitles. And we’re going to need someone like Robyn to translate.'”
YOU ARE NOT TRANSLATING ANYTHING, THE LANGUAGE DOES NOT EXIST.

Re: Star Trek (2017)

i think the subtitles are a good decision; they add some foreignness to the characters and create a further divide between good and bad.

i think if the klingons spoke english, the whole getup would come across as very camp and silly

digging the show so far

Re: Star Trek (2017)

I am a pretty big fan after 4 episodes. I can see why hardcore trek fans might not like it but I love not sitting through 7 stand alone story lines to get a touch of substance.

Don't care at all about the Klingons speaking in Klingon, but do think the scenes drag on forever to seemingly little purpose.

Rest of show is pretty good. Did not like

Re: Star Trek (2017)

For me the issues are tied together. You can't create dramatic tension in a scene when the actors are crippled by a language they can't emote in and a facial prosthesis that makes their expressions unreadable. Can anyone tell any of the Klingons apart? I mean there are the darker ones and the albino ones. But I've been trying to pay attention and I'm not sure who the Klingons are or what they want. Or how many of them there are.

Re: Star Trek (2017)

The fact they're speaking in a fictional language wouldn't be so bad if the language sounded at all plausible. Game of Thrones' made-up languages have a realistic flow, quite possibly because linguists developed them. When Dany speaks in High Valyrian, you can detect the inflections and emphases so can get a sense of her emotions. It's not so different from watching a movie in a genuine foreign language.

In contrast, Discovery's version of Klingon sounds like a bunch of random grunts and noises thrown together. There's no sense of structure or rhythm. Coupling that with overly heavy prosthetics that kill all facial expressions results in Klingons that fall flat.

Re: Star Trek (2017)

This show is a miss imo. Had some potential but they ruined it by trying to be too dramatic and (as usual with the modern Treks) not capturing the essence of the original series.

4/10 (at best) and I'm out.

Nothing to add but still a big fan. Probably means it will get cancelled on a cliffhanger after season 2, as with most shows I like.
