Star Trek (2017) Star Trek (2017)

decent episode overall, man the budget for these must be insane

Spoiler:

1. Spock stuff is already tedious. I hope this gets interesting, and fast.
2. The main plot thread is fine and Star Treky, I just hope they didn't shoehorn in Spock because Spock.
3. Pike actor is great, although basically just doing Pike as Kirk.
4. Def thought the red shirt lady was going to die in the asteroid field--they even mentioned her red shirt, but that was a nice fakeout with the dude who had more lines dying instead.
5. A lot of time on the ship that crashed and the engineering lady. Hopefully that isn't just a one-off thing. They still have to explain how that coincides with the signal, etc.

This is pretty much my exact thoughts in the episode.

It also felt a bit more Star Trecky while keeping with the serial nature. I personally loved how season 1 wasn't but I know it turned off die hard fans who hated the fact klingons looked differently and who hated any change.

As an old Trek fan, I'm OK with changing the Klingons to make them look less human. it makes sense even if I think it's not an improvement over their Samurai-biker look of TNG.

Yeah I just never got the hate. It really isn't that important. I know reddit people were flipping out over it and saying they aren't watching a single episode after the premier.

None of the tech/makeup/whatever stuff that's improved after the past 50 years bothers me at all. I really don't care at all that Discovery looks decades more advanced than the TOS Enterprise.

Why do people care about this stuff? It's just ignorant of reality.

Curious about the budget for each episode. There is none of the typical hey look cgi on a tv show budget look

Shows always have huge budgets for first and last episodes because ppl don't remember.

I am not totally sure where this is all going but I am in for the ride. Feels more Trek then the first season but still modern and not total single episode arcs.

questions about canon with spoilers
Spoiler:
Is section 31 the admiral who went all crazy in wrath of khan remake. If it is I kind of dig the origin story we will get of science star fleet vs army star fleet

Trying to avoid looking on reddit for the answer

Spoiler:
yes but keep in mind the JJ Abrams movies are an alternate timeline and this show is set in the prime timeline with everything else, as far as I know

deleted scene from last season:

last episode thoughts:

Spoiler:
Michelle Yeoh is so awesome. I really like her popping in and out to do crazy things and she's just so much fun. A bit wary of them giving her an entire series, though. Not sure that's sustainable. Also, who is that Klingon baby gonna turn out to be? Has to be someone major in the lore, right?

Mybe it is me being desperate for space sci fy since they cancelled Star Gate Universe but this show is really good. Amazing how they have blended old Star Trek style with the serial feel of season 1.

I really wasn't sure if
Spoiler:
saru
was going to die or not so what was a potentially cliche scene worked imo.

Spoiler:
Also I like the Spock story line, or lack there of, as a good way of doing it. I am sure we will get a few Spock focused episodes sometime this season but less is more I think

And as a little aside we find out a massive amound of the crew and Starfleet as a whole are not actually human. Makes perfect sense but I don't remember any other Star Trek showing this.

Liked it a lot too, enjoyed seeing Pike's Number One again, 50 years or whatever after the character appeared briefly before.

In terms of currently airing sci fi, The Expanse is probably better overall, but Discovery isn't bad at all. Fingers crossed the live action Star Wars show is this good.

I will have to give Expanse a watch then. Either way it is crazy how bad Star Trek washandled as a whole from the late 90's till the new movies, minus the third new one, that was awful. Seems like they should have been printing money.

I am not totally sure what to think of that episode, a touch of a filler to bring most of the characters to one place and storyline. Dat cg budget though.

I for a split second thought it was
Spoiler:
Pike

I don't understand what specifically your spoiler is in reference to.

Thought this episode was kinda meh. Hopefully we are done with the spore universe stuff for a bit.

When he got thrown into the giant ball of sun built out of the network I thought for a second the Doc was him. No need for spoiler since didn't actually happen.

I am an idiot and was drinking last night. No clue why I typed Pike not Lorca

Total old school style episode with a tiny bit of moving the main story forward. Half way through I thought it was a crap episode but I liked it once it finished.

What the hell is the red angel?

Spoiler:
Future humans, Q continuum, beings from a different universe, literally an angel sent from 'god" ,something section 31 knows a little too much about, something totally new?

Holy hell that episode just turned this season up in a hurry. So much going on. I realize now what the throw back first minute was. Still a little lost need to find some cliffs.
