i don't speak korean but it was very clear to me the lead actor is something special. a lot of the acting he did had no dialogue.

Was a really silly show tbh. I don't mind odd premises but it was just too much for me. The VIPs were laughably bad and a massive letdown.

It held my interest, although doubt I'd watch a Season 2.

Ya the VIPs were terrible. Probably the worst part. I didn't love the ending either. Rest of the show was great.

it was funny how awful the vips were. i guess they had a really small pool of white actors to cast from, cuz jfc those actors were bad lol

Agree totally that the VIPs were awful, but I really enjoyed watching the contestants trying to survive the games. I thought that part was brilliantly done and more than compensated for the cringier moments.

All I can say is my sons, who normally have zero interest in being sheep, said if they didn't get to watch all of this right after it came out they'd be pariahs at school. After that, my wife and I said why not give it a try. So far.......pretty decent.

Did anyone read "The Long Walk" by Steven King, which he wrote under his Bachman pseudonym? Reminds me of that somewhat.

Yes I love The long Walk, one of my favorite King stories. I also was reminded of it when watching Squid Game... wonder if the show's creator had read it.

One thing I was thinking while watching Squid Game - it's incredible how much massive influence one book from the 50s still has over culture. Think about all the pop culture that derives DIRECTLY from Lord Of The Flies.

That book warped our minds.

One part that bugged me:

Spoiler:
When the glass exploded for no reason after the 3 finalists had made it across, basically mortally wounding the female character. It was totally random and went completely against the supposed fairness aspect of the games, that the front man kept touting. If you pass the test you should not be showered by shards of flying glass.

It was ostensibly in keeping with the time limit, with the bridge rigged to explode if anyone was still on it after the nine minutes was up. I suppose there should have been some sort of means to not have it explode if there were no contestants still on it, either that or a way to shield those who made it over in time, especially given the real risk to their safety and in keeping with their message of the game being fair to all contestants

they change the rules all the time. they make it unfair all the time. just like....well you know....society and capitalism.

Haven't seen it yet, but in my world of show taste, it is definitely not a trademark, if a show is one of the most watched in the history of a streaming company :-)
