This was the best show in a long while. 2nd half was indeed weak.

@Namath - John Mulaney is hilarious.

That can't be it at least not based on that monologue. (I'll cop to not having seen his standup yet)

Don't bother, its more of the same vapid monologue.

I can't understand how he can write something like the hilarious Stephon character and be so unfunny.

I have to believe Bill Hader just brings something out that he doesn't have by himself.

I had no idea who John Mulaney was before the show, but he seems pretty funny/talented. Above-average episode IMO.

He was a writer on SNL for awhile. He was the one that always wrote the Stephon pieces and tried to make Hader laugh by making writing changes between the dress and live taping. He then had a VERY short lived sitcom soon after leaving SNL. He's become really big since with a couple of stand up specials, and a two man Broadway show with Nick Kroll called, "Oh, Hello" based on two characters that they'd done on Kroll's sketch show.

If you saw Spiderverse, he was the voice of Spiderham.

He's a super funny dude and great writer. I noticed a definitive uptick in the quality of the sketch writing in his episode, and I'm pretty sure it's because he had a big hand in writing them.

So, what did everyone think about that musical act this week?

Funnier than most of the sketches.

I can usually give or take Sandler, but he impressed. That Farley tribute song was the best thing on the show all season.

Maybe I enjoyed the Sander Family Reunion a little too much, but thought they really nailed his characters, esp. Waterboy

Going to NYC this weekend. Any secret ways to get tickets? Don't want to wait in line.

I've been trying for 15-20 years, even know a guy that worked for NBC & pitched a pilot at NBC, knows some higher ups at NBC but NO CAN DO.

and from what I've heard waiting in line is only for a shot at a rehearsal ticket (which I heard is better than going to the show fwiw) and the really long shot of having a spot open up at the live taping

if there's a trick to getting a ticket, I'd love to know what it is

Sandler's appeal (when he was on SNL) I think is akin to Fallon and Pete Davidson. They're these young likable dudes who aren't really cut out for sketch but they give on an energy like if a friend of yours from high school.got on the show, so you're just rooting for the guy because you know and like him.

In all fairness, Fallon at least had some decent impression chops and after awhile, developed into a decent sketch performer. This is kinda what happens when Lorne hires stand up comics. I think Eddie Murphy might've been the only great SNL performer that came from stand up (which he barely had anyway, he was only 19). Every other SNL great came from a strong improv and sketch background.

Just to be clear, I'm not referring to cast members that are beloved like Sandler or Tracy Morgan or whoever, but those who were inarguably strong performers on the show.

Fleabag chick episode was funny. Dumbshit online writers obviously didn't like it.

The asian dude they hired just to look good has yet to do or say one funny thing. RiP Shane. Weekend update has been pretty solid so far this season though. Only reason to watch atm for me.

That said, I'll be tuning in next week for Eddie.

He has been a writer on the show for a while, but he ain't funny as an actor. He may have written some good sketches, don't know.

How can they have a month off and fart out that turd. Even Weekend Update was not good. Adam Driver has always sucked and shouldn't be hosting. Halsey was okay.
