She was definitely the pinnacle of the SNL recurring 1/2 dimensional sketch character that has one or two go to catch phrases and is funny exactly the first time you see it, gets a familiar chuckle the second time you see it, and is then cringeworthy the next 1,000 times. Absolutely brutal for comedy, and for whatever we can complain about SNL now, it does seem like they currently have fewer recurring sketch characters than ever in the history of the show, which is a good thing.

Re: Melissa V, yes her voice is actually like that, and she is probably one of the most awkward human beings you've ever met. As long as they never make her play a straight character and always give her either an impression or way out there character that she can dive head first into, she'll be a good asset to the show (sort of the opposite approach as Pete Davidson, whose contributions to the show are virtually nonexistent outside of him doing stand up material behind the Update desk).

That was a funny comment about jacked up comic actors being unfunny, although I think Terry Crews is pretty damn good. He's definitely a good addition to whatever project he's in, even if the project itself is garbage.

I'm just making counterpoints. i have nothing against her, and i was furious when everyone tried to villify her for 6 year old cornball jokes on twitter... but yeah, i think her natural speaking voice might be god awful. Possibly Kathy Griffiny. i could easily look this up but... too lazy.
Why is that unfair? Is Cheri Oteri really known for her dynamic range of characters? In my mind she is really good at very specific things.

The Felicity Jones ep was brutally unfunny beginning to end.

I don't know how I feel about every WU joke leading into a rant. It's something different, which I appreciate, but for every joke, seems a bit much (that goes for both, not just Che)

WU has been one of better segments, on the shows, the past couple of seasons, but this week's sucked. I'm fine with the rants as long as there is some kind of humor involved.

McCarthy last night was a riot. I just watched Ghostbuster's a week ago so I actually recognized her instantly before she started talking (audience didn't know at first). I'm finally starting to see what all this hype has been around her.

Seriously though that's the funniest this show has been in a long time. Probably since Larry as Bernie. Inspired choice to play Spicer. Bravo.

Yes, that was awesome. I liked a number of the other skits last night as well.

Defintely an uptick this week, no totally hideous sketches which is a rarity (the college drinking one was close though). Kristen Stewart was surprisingly non-awful. Both anchors ****ing up massively during WU was kinda funny. McCarthy as Spicer will be awesome if it becomes a regular thing.

SNL still managed to screw up its best sketch in years by playing it so late. Should have been the pre-credit sketch, which I guess even they realized yet didn't change.

The lack of skill of the cast is really apparent when a Melissa Mccarthy makes a guest appearence. After watching people with zero comedic ability week to week I start to forget what funny actors are. Then I see her on screen and I'm like "oh yea that's a funny person". Its a stark contrast to see someone going beyond what's written on the page and actually acting.

Also, I think I mentioned this before. But what was Lorne thinking with hiring 2 bland white guys to replace Taran Killem? (Mikey Day and Alex Moffat---had to look that up obviously). Isn't it better to have a versatile straight man than 2 white bread players?

i think Day and Moffet have done decently so far. they haven't had their breakout role yet, and they probably never really will, but did Taran Killem? dude was overrated. dude was kinda thrust in that "star" spot, and he just wasn't or isn't that. What is your lasting memory of Taran Killem on SNL? Jebediah on Weekend Update? Even the "straight men" through SNL history have their standouts.

Moffet's Casey Affleck impression was pretty damn spot on.

Tarn Killam was probably the 3rd best on the cast when he left, along with McKinnon and Moynihan. I wouldn't call him overrated at all especially looking at who's still left with this group - Sasheer Zamata, Vanessa Bayer and so on. He wasn't all-time great but certainly solid.

In any case McKinnon and guests are definitely carrying the show at this point. If Lorne wanted to shake things up getting rid of someone like Killam, fine I guess, but a lot more people should have been axed along with him besides Jay Pharoah.

The only positive change I've seen recently is Cecily Strong in skits, where she's been much funnier than her Weekend Update days.

It was spot on, but getting back to MiRee's point, was it funny? (it was, kinda, I guess)

I basically agree there's a been lack of naturally funny players for some time now. You can have all the skill and talent at creating voices and impressions in the world (Pharoah), but there still needs to be a there there. There has to be an x factor for it to be over the top funny and worth repeating. I'm totally fine with recurring sketches/characters if they work. It's just they don't really have anything worthy, and I really don't see any of this current cast breaking out with a great character and sprawling it into a film franchise. Maybe Kate.

I like Che, I think he's kinda funny, but I'm not at all sold on Jost, I find him far too monotone, too rigid. Kate's quite good, but good enough to carry the show? For how many years?

I'm just glad they didn't throw Beck or whoever into that press conference sketch though. So very glad.

I keep seeing rumors about Rosie O'Donnell possibly playing Ivanka. Not sure who's camp it's coming out of, but that would incredible if it ever happened.

I think her being President Bannon is better and would have same effect without going after the family.

Define "decently". Yes they know their lines and don't Leslie Jones every sketch but what's the point of pulling cast members from sketch comedy backgrounds? Why not just grab standard actors with no comedic background if they're just going to read cue cards?

I don't think Taran Killem was utilized properly but at least he was capable of doing characters.

I missed the Casey Affleck impression. Are you thinking of the Dunkin Donuts sketch? If so that was not an impression. That was actually Casey Affleck.

Can someone explain to me why SNL doesn't have any Hispanic cast members?

Only one Hispanic cast member, who doesn't look like Hispanic at all.

I have no idea where I'm going with this.
