See that one both ways. I thought it was pretty nice they had an homage to Farley beyond a montage - for the majority of the viewing audience he is easily the biggest deceased star, way in front of Hartman and Belushi.

And having a girl do it was sort of a clever way of making sure it would be different enough from the original that nobody would think someone was trying to upstage Farley.

that said, it was nearly cringe-worthy

I know I will.
this just seemed so forced, imo. Whore-ads was great though.

Whore ads was obvious, though. Le tits now was sneakier.

I died at both of them. Whore ads was funnier as a selection but le tits now used in a sentence was phenomenal

Just watched the special last night, my notes:

-Why Miley, at all? Terrible decision to have her on

-Not only should McCartney not have tried "Maybe I'm Amazed" at his age, he should never attempt it live again

-If I'm Tim Meadows, I'm feeling a little insulted. Dude was on the show for what, 10 seasons? He barely got a blurb. Was hoping for a Ladies Man sighting but it wasn't there unless I went to take a piss and forgot to hit pause and missed it

-I enjoyed Bassomatic for nostalgia's sake, but it hasn't aged well

-John Goodman was either half in the bag or trying really hard to make everyone think he was half in the bag, the only thing missing was a loud belch

-Agree with the sentiment that Californians went on way too long

-Really enjoyed Louis CK's segment, "They've been doing the show wrong for 40 years" cracked me up for some reason

-Really happy that Norm got lots of air time given the ****ty way he was let go from the show, **** Don Ohlmeyer forever and ever

-The memorial was good, though it started off clunky, "Here's some people who died, and you'll be hearing music by this guy," then people weren't sure if they should be clapping and had to commit to clapping for all of them after the first one

-LOVED the auditions, wish they had devoted more time to those

Overall I enjoyed it and thought it was a nice tribute, it could have been better but would have likely needed more than 3.5 hours to get all my favorites in so I can understand most if not all of the decisions

So Norm MacDonald, on Twitter, just told a story that he was supposed to convince Eddie Murphy to do Celebrity Jeopardy then says something about the laughs not being worth kicking a man when he's down. Did they want him to do Cosby? Worth reading, unlike a lot of things Norm tweets.

EDIT: Yup, just read back further. He was supposed to do Cosby.

as bad as Eddie's segment was, having all the hubbub about him coming back only to do a completely done to death Cosby impression would have terrible.

Also never knew that a Spade crack was the reason he never came back. Norm seems to blame Spade, but it seems kind of thin skinned on Eddie's part. Everybody gets abused on that show, no?

not really. I think it would have brought the house down. Potent potables -> video daily double -> eddie in sweater -> one line. would have been hilarious

Finally watched the SNL40 special, a few hot takes:

- Forgot how hilarious Chris Farley as Newt Gingrich was
- Man, young Cheri Oteri was smoking hot
- Gilda Radner was/is incredibly overrated
- Highlight of celebrity Jeopardy was Carrey as McConaughey
- Watching Paul McCartney perform is just sad now, you're a zillionaire bro, time to hang it up
- Agree Eddie Murphy as Cosby would have absolutely killed it

Norm's tweets were fascinating as well -- had no idea that celeb Jeopardy was "his" (stolen from a Canadian show) skit idea and originally the celebs weren't supposed to be dumb, just dicks.

not to be a douche, but if Gilda Radner was alive today, no one would ever talk about her. No one talks about Jane Curtin and she by all accounts seemed funnier.

also, she's said it in the past ,but i find it hard to believe Roseanne Rosannadanna is Emma Stone's favorite character

Did not realize until today that Gilda Radner and GE Smith were married before she met Gene Wilder.

So Cosby came out and thanked Eddie Murphy. I kinda disagree with Norm's view of Eddie taking the high road here.
#1 - This is what SNL does. What show did he think he was on?
#2 - It's a good thing we're drawing the line at abusing an "alleged" chronic rapist? Would Eddie balk at making fun of OJ too?

Just playing devil's advocate here--Eddie probably felt it was hypocritical to make fun of a fellow comic when that's just what he got his panties all in a bunch about in the first place.

That said, Spade making fun of a guy because his recent movies had bombed is a little different from Eddie lampooning a guy who's drugging and raping women.

I've talked to lots of people in their 50s and 60s who are big fans of hers and remember her as being super damn funny on the show. Of course, the nostalgia factor might be at work here, but if you watch reruns, her stuff does tend to get huge and consistent laughs. And she was showcased waaay way more than Jane or Lorraine. She, Belush, and Chevy really were the big break out stars of the original cast, followed by Bill Murray, with Aykroyd always being more of the utility guy and the other girls and Garrett being majorly marginalized.

It just worked out that Lorne Michaels and most cast members were pretty young when it started out.

They should have done it 10 years ago really, I know they wanted to but it was a budget thing IIRC. It just worked out for them that they didn't seem to lose many people outside of Jan Hooks since. And I guess finally got Eddie Murphy chilled out enough to come back.
The reason they didn't do it 10 years ago was because they did it 15 years ago.

The reason McCartney sucked is because he had had a concert just a day ago and also Maybe I'm Amazed is really demanding. I agree he shouldn't be performing it.

He still has done well in recent years, New was a really good album IMO and Only One is a really great song, though he doesn't sing in it.

Can they possibly squeeze any more fifty shades into this crapfest?

That chick is pathetically annoying, I'd have ball gagged her too.
