Been great overall but this Californian's sketch is #SNL40'S version of a concert drum solo

So I enjoyed the musical bit.

Norm I don't get.

The video montages look thrown together in about an hour, not a lot of deep cuts, the same characters(actors) over and over

her and Martin Short - what a horrible pairing. Short didn't annoy me as much as he usually does, but she was terrible. that impression isn't funny. loved seeing everyone else though

Miley Cyrus? WTF?
Of all the great music acts on the show that's what they went with?

That list. That ****ing list. I think Ferrell, Wiig, Farley, Hader in the 12-15 are defensible-type rankings even if I don't necessarily place them there.

Darryl Hammond and Tim Meadows at 48 and 49 are not defensible choices. Neither is Tina Fey at 3 or Poehler at 8. Or at the bottom end with Norm and so on. You could build an amazing cast drafting from the mid-30s on this list. If there had been 500 cast members that might make sense.

The guy seems like he has a hard on for replacement-era nobodies out of the 80s. I doubt there are 5 episodes I've missed and I honestly can't recall a skit at least 20 of those people were in. Have to wonder how much of this article was written based on web reviews and Wiki pages.

Paul Simon pulls the musical acts out of the dumpster fire.

That's how you entertain.

And I don't care for Simons music.

Good ending.

For a second I wondered why they did this specifically at 40 years, then realized that some of them may not be there for 50 years. Hell, Chevy Chase didn't look like he was there tonight.

Pretty solid overall. The sketches they went with were all relatively recent vintage, but obviously they had to go with who was there and could actually pull it off. After what was essentially a straight-up recreation of the Bass-O-Matic commercial, I was afraid they'd be doing that all night, thankfully they didn't. Digital short was OK, the highlight was the "here's another one from Fallon and Sanz!" part.

Sucks that Eddie Murphy didn't do anything but his brief little speech that was half the length of his own intro, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume it's because it was a last minute thing, and not because he was being a dick or thought it was beneath him or something.

I wouldn't have minded a little longer Weekend Update, maybe rotating around a few of the anchors and giving them all one story to read. Jane Curtin's teeth looked weird. LOL at Colin Quinn fumbling over his own line about not being able to read the cue cards, which was totally not intentional.

Shame about Jon Lovitz. He'll be missed.

Not only that, but Lorne Michaels will almost certainly not be running the show in ten years, and the future of SNL might be in doubt when he leaves. In any case, it certainly seems appropriate to have a celebration while he's still at the helm.

The Lovitz stuff was great. During the digital short, I turned to my wife and said, "Horatio Sanz and Jimmy Fallon always broke." Sure enough.

Enjoyed Wayne's World, too. That sketch was always basically the same thing, but it always delivered. Plus, the rare SNL spin-off movie that was good.

On a sentimental note, "Still Crazy After All These Years" was the first song my wife and I danced to, so that was a nice way to end the show.

Huge bummer moment. He hasn't been funny in ~25 years. I just don't think he cares about it all.

It's a fortunate enough that they were able to do this at 40. To have any show survive that long and with the original guy still running it is nuts, plus with a lot of the early cast still alive and functional enough to do skits. It just worked out that Lorne Michaels and most cast members were pretty young when it started out.

They should have done it 10 years ago really, I know they wanted to but it was a budget thing IIRC. It just worked out for them that they didn't seem to lose many people outside of Jan Hooks since. And I guess finally got Eddie Murphy chilled out enough to come back.
