As usual, less than two good sketches, decent weekend update, lots of filler.

love the strokes tho, good to see them again

The lounge singer sketch, has that been a staple of late?

They used Miley well in this episode, she can't do a lot of things, but she is high energy and they picked sketches that used that well.

The Sheen sketch was about the least creative thing they could have done. It was like watching Hader play a ****** sitcom character mugging for facetime so he could say his catchphrases. It didn't help that they decided to fill the sketch out with random celebrities so they couldn't do anything else.

I find myself saying this every week, but WTF do they do during the week? Seems like on Wednesday they could just say "Okay we are going to do these 5 sketches we have all done before. See you guys on Saturday."

The sketches I liked were the disney acting school and the miley cyrus show. I think Miley is cool I'd watch her again.

Saying miley is hot kinda creeps me out, she's a lovely girl but the key word is GIRL! What is she, 18? I hope you guys are teenagers too

i thought the Miley cyrus show sketch was by far the worst one they've done of that.

I thought pretty much every skit was bad, although I am a sucker for the dancing french soap opera.

Weekend Update was good--second hand news with Anthony Crispino is one of my favorite gags.

Was dissapointed in this episode, but then again ,what else is new for snl

i swear this is my fav WU character. Manages to make laugh even more than Steffon

Anthony Crispino is a really great concept, but the execution is awful. The second hand news he hears is too ridiculous and jokey, which prevents them from capturing people like that. He's on a news show already they don't need a second gimmick. Also like Stefon the writing is so lazy, they don't hit any different beats they just switch the punchlines it is sketch comedy madlibs.

Crispino definitely needs breaking out of WU, Stefan i really like and refuse to bad mouth it even though i agree its sketch comedy madlibs.

[Phil],
Are you suggesting the build a traditional sketch around Crispino? Or that they should scrap the character all together?

I would float building some kind of sketch around the character but i agree with what you are about to say that it will be difficult to pull off as it overlaps with WU a lot.

Id probably adapt the character and tweak it from the "i heard from a guy" material about the news to being about the host and other celeb impressions by the cast and turn the concept into more of an interview format.

I think Stefon is someone they should break into sketches. He is a really strong character, but they have no interest in exploring new ground with them. There are only so many "Trannie Oakley" type jokes that will work and while they are all well written the sketches just turn into Hader reciting puns.

Anthony Crispino isn't a good character, but it is a funny premise. They could make it a funny sketch that parodies arrogant bull****ters who litter their speech with malapropisms or they could make it a news-media satire about how news outlets are in such a rush to report things that the stories that do get reported are often the last thing said in a large game of telephone. They are trying to do the first one, but failing because the writing is so broad that they don't capture any of the minutia of this character type. They don't even attempt to make a larger media satire, which isn't necessary, but would be an improvement over what they have. They have a good nugget for a sketch, but instead turn it into 4 minutes of someone confusing Charlie Sheen with Charlie Rose.

Galifianakis was pretty damned good (esp in scared straight),that sketch alone makes this the best SNL in a long time.

Monologue was great, then the show sucked up until the Noodles sketch which was one of my favorites of the season. SNL has been missing the sort of insane, absurd sketches like that recently.

The first half of the corn syrup short was amazing too, but then it ended so blah.

But your right, the sketch with the dog, and tbh it was only the end bit after the dog was introduced, was the downturn point of the show, though there were a few misses here and there earlier.

few funny sketches. I know people are gonna be quick to claim it was a good episode b/c ZG hosted, but he really isnt great in the sketches, he's just not. There have been plenty of better episodes lately.

Also, the monologue was cool, but ive seen that act for 10 years now. I guess it's fine though, b/c 75% of the country probably never saw his stand up before Hangover.

Also, what was he promoting? have they abandoned that aspect of the show? I dont recall random guests in the past without a movie opening or a show on tv. So far they've had Dana Carvey, Miley Cyrus, Zach and Elton John this season.

They need to get some current tv stars hosting. Gimmie Ty Burrel and Joel McHale.

He hosted last year as well and that episode wasn't very good either. His stand up is hilarious but Zach + SNL is just a bad match.

Ty Burrel is a good suggestion.

I saw ZG Live At The Purple Onion and you raise a good point, his material from both SNL shows were familiar. Beyond that I haven't seen much of his stand-up..wait, I did see him in another Comics on the road show...it had a bunch of character actors/comics, it was ****ing depressing and ZG left the show in the middle of the tour, awkward.

I also wonder why they have certain guests on, wait...that person is not relevant right now, no movie/show coming out...wth?

yea, Zach's first appearance wasnt that good either. It's not so much that the hosts arent relevant, it's just that they have nothing to promote, i didnt think they ever did that. Dana Carvey is a top 5 castmember of all time, he's allowed to host when he wants. But someone like Miley, they couldnt wait til she had a movie, or an album? Or Zach, im sure they are gonna have him back when Hangover 2 comes out, why not just wait? He hosted less than a year ago i think.

Slappy Pappy weh wehhh

that stupid skit made me laugh. especially when he was spinning the mic and when Sudekis did White Bernie Mac.
