Russell Brand is the worst. I had to turn the show off. I've never done that before.

The only time you ever turned off SNL was when Russel Brand was on? That perplexes me. Not that I'm a huge fan of Brand myself, but SNL can be quite awful. Shirley you're exaggerating a little?

Am I the only one who thinks Vanessa Bayer is pretty damn good?

Nope, she has more than proven herself the best of the new batch and an extremely important part of the cast.

Id be shocked if she isnt promoted to featured player next season.

Of the other new cast i think Jay Pharaoh is the only guy who hasnt really proven himself a key part of the cast. He has some strong impressions, but they arent backed up with good scripts and i cant think of a time he was in a sketch not playing a specific celeb.

I thought the ep last night was a little hit and miss, Stefan was of course the best part but the old ladies drinking tea was the absolute low, with one joke repeated like five times. Oh and we really didnt need to see another "person on doorstep wins something and doesnt scream" sketch, Emma Stone's was good and Russel Brand just had nothing to add to that. I know, i know, SNL is all about repeating the same formula and milking it till it runs dry, but meh.

Im a fan of Russel Brand but he just had nothing to work with imo. I think the best sketch performance he had was the king's taster one (which btw, worst joke of the night when they just tacked on the King's Speech reference) or maybe the chef one yet both felt like they lacked something and it just came across pretty generic. His entire style is unique and i dont think there was much if anything he did on the show couldnt be done by pretty much any other actor.

Also what's up with Chris Brown being on? Do people not care about him beating on Rihanna anymore?

The British movie trailer was friggen brilliant. Some good skits, some bad. Taran whatever's Eminem impression was awesome.

Bottom line: Hader killed (trailer, stefon, british cook) everything else was off. The writing was just poor. Brand is an over the top kind of guy. I feel like the writers didn't really know what to do with him other than try monty python stuff that didn't work too well. They should have used more Jim Carrey like skits instead of shoe horning him in with the overacting Wiig.

+1 for Bayer. She destroyed that living single skit as she does with the Miley Cyrus show. I think Pharoah suffers from what Brand did tonight. They just don't know what to do with him writing-wise. The Lil Wayne/Eminem bit was really funny though. Pharoah could become an update staple if he got the chance I think.

Weak show, but not Brand's fault. Writing was poor.

I actually thought this ep was one of the strongest of the season, if not the strongest. Maybe I was just in a weird mood when I watched it but I thought the King Taster sketch, British movie, Eminem + Wayne, Livin' Single were all very good. I also thought the old ladies with tea sketch was hilarious although I'm not exactly sure why. Possibly because it was so dumb that it became funny.

Bayer is definitely awesome imo, she's already getting more screen time than like Abby Elliott and Pedrad who have been on the show for awhile.

Also, while I really like Stefon. Hader cannot keep a straight face and they need to abandon it. I would like to see them do some other stuff with the character instead of filling in the same blanks every single time.

i thought this episode was really terrible. almost all of the skits were awful, aside from living single which was OK. also really hated the monologue that just carried on forever and had little direction.

I disagree. Its imperfect and Hader does break a fair bit, but its also the best returning character they have by a big margin. Quote me when they find a midget joke that isnt funny and i might agree, but for now its working as a WU guest and im not sure how you can retool it and keep the same comedy unless its literally "Stefan reviews clubs" which is exactly the same just in standalone format.

The problem with the monologue imo is Russel has a standup style that is basically the same, yet he cant use his normal material. It just didnt get going and ended up dragging. I also think it didnt help that the crowd wasnt into it at all so by the end it was just pretty awkward.

Phil,
They can keep it in WU, but they don't need to write all of Stefon's lines like.
New York's hottest new club is BLANK. Club Promoter BLANK created a club that asks the question BLANK. This club has everything BLANK, BLANK, BLANK, BLANK,

Seth: What's Blank?

Stefon: You know that thing where etc.

I think Russel's standup isn't very good, but I liked that idea of having an opening monologue that was just standup.

I was almost in tears, seems like they borrowed from Guy Ritchie's style and trailers from his movies.

I haven't watched much from this season but I liked Russel Brand's episode. Lots of hit or miss. Getting tired of Kristen Wiig's character, she was funny at first, but she's a one-trick pony. =(
