Papyrus was decent. Only thing I remember kinda liking

The pizza hut one was a strong premise but didn't like the execution. I find those types of commercials absolutely ridiculous

OJ sketch was decent, pretty much everything else was terrible.

The Last Fry digital short that was "cut for time" was excellent. Obviously I don't know all of the calculus that goes into Lorne Michaels decision matrix for cutting sketches, but it seems like they never should've hired Beck Bennett and Kyle Mooney if stuff like that doesn't make it. Maybe he thought it was slightly too touchy politically.

Holy **** that was a bad episode

whoever did that brief Kristen Schaal impression was scary close at it, but I can't remember anything actually funny the entire show. Usually McKinnon saves something or you get a couple laughs from Update or the cold open...expected so much more especially with the events this past week. Seemed like the energy was there but the material wasn't

The writing is terrible. Although I don't blame them. Every single joke they write will be under scrutiny and offend somebody. Probably better off just ending the show.

It's getting too trendy to hate on SNL at this point.

I thought last night's episode was actually pretty good. Monologue was good. Host did well in every sketch. Most sketches worked. I liked the Schaal impression as well (wish they would expand that). The Mooney/Bennett piece was hilarious. Update was decent as per.

Honestly, at some point we have to stop holding them up to our impossible to reach nostalgic standards of the mid to late 90s golden era.... or whichever era you subscribe to.

There's still a chance for another resurgence, but they can't go on too much longer with this level of quality or else the show won't be seen as relevant by people in or out of the industry anymore, and it won't attract any good talent. I think it might be time for Lorne and most of the writing staff to go.

I also thought last night's episode was decent compared to the rest of the season so far, but that's not saying much.

People should really watch old SNLs some time. We remember the great sketches but the show has always been hit or miss at best -- it's just the nature of the beast. The main reason to watch it (for me at least) is to enjoy watching a group of people try to put on a show so quickly.

I do think the writing and Weekend Update is a little worse now than before, but the cast is pretty strong and I don't find it notably worse than previous eras of the show. People calling it "irrelevant" is also pretty amusing when last season felt like the most culturally relevant the show has ever been possibly (mostly due to Trump-related stuff that I personally didn't think was amazing, but still).

Usually they do those audition sketches that are just a reason to show off a bunch of impressions because cast members have some good celebrity impressions, but man those impressions as a whole were rough. I told the girlfriend afterward that the Schaal impression was the only good one.

I’m totally on board with the position that people overrate old SNL, but even I think that this season has been worse. The past few years I have still kind of looked forward to watching it even though I knew a lot of the sketches would be bad. This season I barely want to watch and haven’t gotten through a couple eps.

This episode was much better. Chance/Eminem both great. Esp liked the fill-in hockey announcer thing

Chance was a great host. Probably the best episode of the season by a wide margin to me. Nothing really angered me and the usual Kate Mckinnon hamfest was subdued a bit.

the hockey thing was a decent idea (tho i saw someone point out that they basically did the same thing with Tim Meadows in the 90s), but poorly written/executed, as about everything they do seems to be these days

They should just record the writers meetings where they bounce ideas off each other. Then they can edit down the hours of footage to like 30 minutes every week and just show that. We'd get all the humorous premises without them dragging them out to an unfunny length.

Kate McKinnon as Jeff Sessions is really good though.

That got really old for me after a few appearances. I feel like Sessions himself is not nearly "interesting" enough IRL to keep parodying.

Yeah he was very good, really hope they have him back.

Agree with the prevailing sentiment here otherwise, this season has been mostly abysmal. The Larry David ep was shockingly unfunny other than Weekend Update, the ad council sketch was OK but can't recall laughing any other times. The players don't seem any worse than usual though. The writing is severely lacking.

F-bomb skit was actually pretty funny even before the f-bomb, though it certainly added to it.

That guy may go down as the least talented musical act ever to perform on the show.
