For me South Park season 7 is the best season of any animated comedy. I do love all the shows mentioned though plus Futurama and Bob's Burgers.

what a ludicrous opinion.

I'm 2 seasons into BoJack and I just don't get the immense love.

This. Simpsons is old as **** tho and most recent shows benefited hard from the Simpsons being there before.

This is ridiculous. Not only is there not a single bad episode of the Simpsons from s3-s7, it's hard pressed to say there is a single bad minute in those 118 episodes.*

That isn't me as some fanboy. I fully recognize the flaws of the Simpsons and it's decline, but those 5 seasons can safely be called flawless.

*note: This does not include the clipshows in seasons 4 and 6, but, even by season 7 they made the best clip show ever with The Simpsons 138th episode spectacular.

That's not to say the shows you mentioned aren't great, they are. However, Rick and Morty showed a noticeable decline this year, Bojack is great but has a few misses each season, and Archer has also shown decline now into s7.

Talking about The Simpsons heyday, you simply cannot place a season of any show head to head with Simpsons s6 or s7 and tell me it's better. I haven't found it yet, and I've been watching tv for 23 years now.

Fwiw, while season 8 isn't perfect, it has some of the series' best episodes that can go head to head with any single episode of any other show.

Do you feel it's aged poorly? Which episode have you watched most recently?

Simpsons was packed with spot-on satire. Check out how condensed this scene is:

God damn, that whole episode is so good and such a brutal takedown of the media.

Speaking of **** holding well to today, you can totally apply that episode to today's media and it's still a picture perfect destruction of everything the media is and stands for.

The one right underneath it in the playlist with Skinner and Supernintendo Chalmers and the steamed hams is one of my all time favorite 3 minutes of tv

Love all of the recent Simpsons talk ITT. And I love that the Homer Badman episode is just as brutal of a takedown of those who consume media as it is of the media itself. So f*cking good.

Would be awesome if there was enough interest for an OOTV Simpsons thread for seasons 3-8. Like many folks, it's been years since I've watched those golden seasons, and I miss the days (1995-2002-ish) when I'd devour episodes when Fox's primetime weekday schedule was: {630pm Simpsons, 7pm Simpsons, 730pm Seinfeld, 11pm Simpsons}. Maybe that's a Lounge thread...

I'd be happy to partake in a rewatch/discussion of those seasons for sure.

If you're a simpsons junkie and haven't checked it out yet, I highly recommend Talking Simpsons, a chronological podcast looking at each episode from the Laser Time folks.

Not as impressive since it's just comedies, of which there are fewer out there, but it still says a lot. Then again, I'm 47 so maybe this already went without saying to most who fall within this demographic.

i would love a tournament style battle of peak simpsons vs peak other animated shows. the hard part is that we know where the peak simpsons are, we dont yet know what peak R&M, bojack, archer (although this is now getting more clear) are yet.

there are a few perfect simpsons episodes, SP episodes, and some perfect R&M, bojack, and to a lesser degree, perfect futurama episodes.

also re: R&M and its future -- how many of you are harmontown fans? ive listened to every episode for years, and it will be really telling to hear dan talk about it now and see if R&M comes up. after season 6 of community, you could tell by some of his rants that he just didnt have it in him to do it anymore. he doesnt talk about R&M that much, but has invested a lot in starburns industries (the production house R&M lives in), so it sounds like there's room for it to keep going, but so much of it hinges on justin and dan's emotional investment.

I think the real danger is Roiland burning out. He's much more involved in R&M than Harmon is

If you did a 64 episode tournament of best half hour animated comedies the Simpsons would need like half the bracket and their bubble eps would be like 7 seeds in the other regions. It's tough to imagine now but they were doing TWENTY FIVE EPISODE SEASONS of straight fire, and they did that for like 5 years. Archer and Rick and Morty and stuff have some really great episodes, but they are hit and miss with their 12 episode seasons.

There were more bad episodes of Archer in the most recent season than there were bad episodes of the Simpsons during the first term of Bill Clinton's Presidency.

You guys convinced me to rewatch some Simpsons. I can't believe how long ago the Radioactive Man episode aired. I've been out-relaxing my cousin for so so many Christmases.

Roiland seems pretty upbeat on Twitter imo so dunno about burnout but man something about that guy really makes me think "this is a man who does lots and lots of cocaine"

Yeah

Rick and Morty has 31 episodes over a 3 1/2 year period, Archer is at 94 episodes over 8 years.

Simpsons season 4-7 was from 9/92 to 5/96 so basically same time as R&M and pumped out 98 episodes with basically no duds. It's really unheard of.

Thanks! This podcast was previously on my radar but I never managed to check it out. I'm about 2/3 finished their discussion of the Homer Badman episode, and it's been great. I really appreciate how (seemingly) familiar the hosts are with Futurama, though I get the impression from their tone (e.g. "a very 1990s episode") that it's probably more precise to say that the hosts are pop-culture junkies (which encompasses their Simpsons/Futurama/etc fandom).

I legit laughed-out-loud at their recalling Family Guy non-sequiturs like "You know what I haven't had in a while? Big League Chew."

And now I'm already 2 episodes into re-watching S6, lol.
