Because it was a streaming episode, you might have started watching the episode in-progress.

I turned myself into jail, overthrew the government, and took over your family just so I can get some sauce. Szechuan McNugget sauce, that's my whole character arc! It's going to take 9 seasons! 9 seasons Morty. We're gonna go on so many more adventures, we gotta find that sauce.

How can you not love this show.

Has anybody figured out what Rick says while watching the events of 9/11. I only make out the word "freedom".

Also, the sports blooper is great. The second guy actually catches the ball.

Something like "this is just going to be an excuse to take away our freedom".

i was only recently turned onto this show. so i got to watch all s1 and s2 in order right through and then got s3e1 via the stream this past weekend. it's definitely on track for GOAT animated show status. simpsons, south park, family guy, etc. are all good but this is *SO* original that we haven't seen a break from standard sitcoms since south park itself (and even that was still in the same vein as other shows. there's families, goes forward in time usually - except cartman freezing himself -, it's all continuous and "i learned something today" type stuff. rick and morty is FARRRR outside that paradigm and that universe).

also, folks, if you're gunna quote stuff, get it right. somebody quoted the keep summer safe gag and it ruined it. it REALLY goes: "my function is to keep summer safe. not keep summer being like, totally stoked, about like, the general vibe and stuff. that's you. that's how you talk."

things i'd love to see this season:
- revisit rick's (real, not fake) past
- evil morty origins
- confirmation of whether C137 morty is "C137" rick's original morty (remember in s1 council of rick's episode, morty is a baby in rick's memory that flashes, but according to beth, he never saw morty until he was much older)
- more mr. poopybutthole (or at least a check in to see what's up).
- ball fondlersers (ball fondlers 2)
- two brothers 2, there's gotta be something there. btw, that two brothers commercial was one of the best things on tv (as an aside, how did nobody mention the SNL thing where he skipped over the three monsters saying "uh, uh, i'll come back to that one" and they kept it in the cut).
- how jerry is kept in the picture as the divorced dad. he could get all mid life crisisy and get a new job and a fancy car or he could go the way of depressed dad and revisit "so this is what rock bottom feels like" and ask summer for money again.

overall the show is phenomenal. just really really good.

You could even say it's a show about nothing... what a paradigm shift!

I think it's a pretty good show too but damn dude, calm down. Rick & Morty dialogue is not sacrosanct.

lol. i'd say that about any quotation about any show. get'em right. c'mon. it's not hard.

a show about nothing? really? i coulda sworn there were archs, even discussed by the characters themselves and the show is serialized and can be described as a completely new take on a cartoon family sitcom. but one where nobody went before.

seinfeld was much more a show about nothing, and on purpose. they did an entire episode in the waiting room of a chinese restaurant that went nowhere.

I don't know how Seinfeld was a show about nothing any more than Happy Days or whatever was on before them. If I say "the masturbation episode" or "the soup episode" you know what I'm talking about.

there's no character arcs. the people at the end of the 9th season were *EXACTLY* the same as the people who started season 1. the show went literally nowhere, character wise. they went through ups and downs, but they never changed. they never learned or grew or anything. every single show before or since that's been a major family/friends sitcom type show that i can think of has had character arcs, except seinfeld. even south park has arcs for many of the main and sub characters.

happy days was very clearly not a show about nothing. there were morals, lessons, coming together, etc. seinfeld is "a day in the life" comedy sitcom with 0 character improvement or change. you can reference days in their lives by the things that happen to them, but nothing effects their personas. it's just the random goings on in their lives. happy days had progression and change. as did and do every similar show i can think of. would certainly be interested in seeing if there's another example i'm missing.

lolwat? There are no arcs. Rick, and his dynamic with Morty and the family, is the same in this last episode as it was in the pilot. The Szechuan McNugget sauce character arc thing is supposed to make that very clear to you by satirizing the concept of character growth while breaking the 4th wall (neither of which are new concepts, btw). It's well done, clever, funny... but a new take on a cartoon sitcom family is not a radically original idea.
