Really good episode, and I really liked Daniel's performance in the death chamber. It was nice to see him finally exhibit some range. The Senator's stroke was a really interesting twist. I wonder what's gonna come out of that.

I don't know if there's a show on TV that has more believable character interactions than this one.

1/3 thru this season and nothing of import has happened yet. Yes, it's a slow-paced show by nature, but cmon. Why even have a 6-episode season.

At this point, I'm working on the assumption that we've seen the best this show had to offer in the first 2 seasons, and that was very good. Frankly, that's how it is with most shows these days. First 2 seasons.

This.

It's really hard to describe how I actually fell when I'm watching this show. It's kinda like I'm standing there in real time watching it all unfold.... or something. I dunno.

it continues to amaze me how good actors can be given the right material and people to work with. none of these actors are in the top of the field, but man they are all knocking it out of the park. even the actors with tiny parts are doing great work. i loved peanut's performance. she was great!

however, the first two episodes were kinda disappointing. i liked them, but not as much as i'd hoped. i remember being pretty disappointed during season 2 for a while, but man it ended amazing.

lol at nunneni saying the actor playing daniel finally showed some range! that guy has been killing it all series. his range is subtly wide, but it's definitely there, very high highs and low lows, rage, tenderness, shame, humor, despair, lust, greed, compassion.

Agree, the writing is phenomenal on this show.

Have to give props to Clayne Crawford as Ted Jr., he is really knocking it out of the park. He could easily have been the stock jerk character, but you are able to feel his insecurities and root for him somewhat, or at least feel bad for him. His scenes with Adelaide Clemens are just fantastic.

All of those emotions you've described have been under the same mopey gallows type exterior (like a guy who's been sedated or just coming out of surgery). He obviously has plenty of range as an actor, but they haven't let him do much outside of that type of character specifically.

That scene was the first time you saw a guy with real personality and charisma on screen. If you somehow think that's not exhibiting a lot more range than what he's been allowed to do so far, I don't know what to tell you. It's nice to see something broad and not subtle for a change, and it added a very jarring nature to the show, in my opinion, in a good way.

Believe it or not, his scenes haven't been directed that well. He's doing a lot of very subtle physical cues that come off slightly more stilted than they should if the camera had been in a different place (hesitations, etc.). But his performance is definitely extraordinary in a very difficult character. I don't like the character, but he makes you feel bad for his circumstances. It's kind of the high school a-hole who just found out in a very difficult way that the kind of s*** he was used to doing doesn't play in the real world anymore. His character has had a major wake up call, and you know he's due to lash out in an extreme way at some point.

The most recent episode (Thrill Ride) also belonged to Teddy Jr... wow, that monologue in the car at the end was intense. Great acting and writing.

My one critique of the show is that the lead character of Daniel is becoming less interesting, even as the supporting cast keeps getting better. I almost get the feeling the writers aren't sure where to take his character.

I love this show and for the most part you are correct about the characters. There are so few shows where the characters actually have depth, it is incredibly refreshing to watch one like this where they are not cardboard cut outs but...

What about Ted/Tawny in season 1? Can't believe this hasn't been talked about but their interactions are just bizarre. It is not just that they don't act like a married couple, or a married couple who is having problems, they act like people who barely know each other. They act like co workers who work in different departments who are stuck waiting in the same room together for a meeting to start and are having an incredibly awkward conversation.

It is so glaring it has to be intentional in its unbelievability but I can't figure out what the point of doing that is.

I love the Ted/Tawney relationship and their scenes together are probably my favorite on the show.

Seems to me that they do barely know each other, in a sense. The impression is that Ted is a charming extrovert who swept Tawney off her feet. Tawney by contrast seems a little shy, naive and lacking in self-confidence. So they got married and you get the impression Tawney is never quite sure about her husband... unsure if she loves him, unsure if he would ever hurt her physically, and unsure if he is a good person.

Ted is the aging jock/prom king type who knows deep down he's married someone who is probably too good for him, and he is deathly afraid of his wife realizing that fact.

That's my take anyways. I think both those actors deserved Emmy noms (in fact Rectify got zero noms total I believe, which is ridiculous).

The scenes with Teddy talking to his brother and with Tawney talking to her shrink were great insights into them, great scenes. Tawney says that Teddy can corner her, he probably did that when they got married, he was really into her and she is meek and can't say no. I wonder how long they new each other before they got married, and how long they have been married.

That all makes sense but it still doesn't explain the complete lack of familiarity that we see between them. There is no mention of their wedding at any point in the show so it can't have been recent. It is reasonable to assume they have been married at least two years. Even people who made a mistake in their marriage and who are having problems wouldn't be so glaringly unfamiliar with each other after living together for two years (minimum).

I still find it very jarring in an otherwise amazing show.

Neither of them knew Daniel though, his addition to their lives has brought out sides of them that neither had seen in each other before. Teddy couldn't control his rapey aggro side that he talked about with his brother last episode and Tawny definitely started to feel like maybe Teddy wasn't the right one for her after meeting and getting to know Daniel. Maybe she'd never felt such compatibility with anyone before that. When you combine that with Teddy's behavior it is reasonable for her to feel uncomfortable around him.

Drogo, that's the point of their relationship and that awkwardness is absolutely intentional. They're two people who thought they knew each other who recently found out they didn't know each other at all (as Michael said, Daniel is the wedge that exposed the real them). Teddy's afraid of being found out he's not good enough, and Tawney doesn't think she is good enough. Teddy must have made her feel like she was with his fake exterior sales pitch. Teddy's character is so scummy. The actor is just doing an outstanding job with that role. It's a special kind of tension you don't see very often on TV. Teddy appears to be headed for a major meltdown.

A big thing to note there was that we found out in that episode that Tawney grew up in a group home (not sure if she was an orphan or taken away from her parents) and stayed till she was 20. That's a huge piece of her character, if I interpreted it right, and it makes the character make even more sense. She's afraid of being a burden nearly as much as she's afraid of being abandoned.

Abigail Spencer is also doing the best work I've seen her do.

Just finished e3 and the actor playing teddy is blowing me away. I wish we were getting more eps this season, only 3 more to go. The writing and directing is so good even the guy in the bar had some depth.

Has there ever been a show like this on TV? Stupid ass Trey is gonna get it with that piss poor frame job he did of Daniel. It's been so long I can't remember, George killed himself (fairly sure this happened at the end of the Pilot, I just can't remember if George killed himself or if Trey did it), Trey found the body, and then dumped it and got rid of the gun, right?

So glad this got renewed for another season. I love nearly every dialog scene...which is like every scene.

I thought trey had killed him so much for my memory.

Yeah, thought so. I seem to remember the suicide scene being pretty disturbing, but again this show has gone across 3 years but is only telling one month (if we take Amantha's story at face value)...lol.

Daniel's line about how the wallet n phone must have been wiped clean of prints before he touched them was so damn good.
he always seems so "simple" to ppl but he's super sharp and he's not gonna let them send him back to jail for this murder imo.

The writing in the show is sharp, everything cuts to the chase or intentionally weaves around it. Abigail Spencer must love Ray McKinnon. He's given her so much to work with in a relatively small part. Contrast that with her character on True Detective, and it's pretty lol.
