I have been enjoying this show so far. Jon Voigt is just killing it! I haven't liked him in years but he is awesome in the role of Mickey.

Jon Voight is nailing this thing.

Early in my career, I'm sitting in on the final stage of a $11.7 Mil contract negotiation. My boss is just having his way with the Architect. To give you a frame of reference, there was probably $300K in play. Going in, we probably would have been happy to get $200K and do the deal. But he's clean sweeping and got the full $300K. The deal gets done, and the contract is on it's way for signature. As we are heading out the door, he tells the architect he'll give him the $40K of Cherry trim he really wanted. He later explained to me that that was his negotiating style, press, and press, and press. Never give an inch, and then when you get the best deal you can get, slip them back a bone so there is no hard feelings. The scene with the tranny reminded me of exactly that.

Yeah, I thought the same. At first, it pissed me off that writers tried to push some PC bull**** on me, but once I thought about it, it actually just seemed like good business. He made sure he killed off any potential risks first by pushing hard for all the material, and once he had that, he proceeded to take a guy he hates for lots of money, gave some of it to the tranny so she would dissapear and just kept the rest for himself. Win-win-win.

I have been enjoying this show so far though I got a little bit lost in the last episode. When Ray went to that hotel room, what was that? I don't know who they were or why they were being tapped. Could be that I wasn't paying enough attention though

It isn't totally clear, but the lesbian lady that works in his office has been listening to them for I think all three episodes. It should be something important later on.

So, he is close to his brothers but they hide info about his half-black brother? That didn't make sense. How could they keep that quiet for so long...and why?

Also, and I have only watched 3 eps, but FBI/police guy got Voight out early and then wants something from him? Why not leave him in can and tell him he can spring him early if he helps out. Loss of leverage.

Jon Voight is a great creepy actor. I do like the Harvard-Westalke/Marlborough/Calabassas reference. I grew up in Valley and went to HW.

Ray is basically delusional. He has an idealized view of himself and his family. The reality is that he's a pretty crappy husband, father and brother.

While the "FBI" guy obviously has juice, it's not clear who he's working for - if anyone - There's plenty to indicate he's rogue. Either way, in order to make a deal in advance he would need to meet Mickey in prison. Which would leave a paper trail that I'm guessing he would not want (it may not even be possible for him to meet Mickey in prison).

Re: Brother - I don't get that relationship at all. What was the reason keeping it secret from him? It comes off like Ray is the one that protects them all. He wants to be conservator for molested brother and takes the other brother to his medical appointments. Black guy has been training there the entire time. Seems like it would be impossible to keep secret anyway. Just didn't feel realistic.

Re: FBI guy. Yeah, needs to play out more.

Haha. I was a few years before the Collin twins. Right before the W was ended to H-W.

I pass SFHS everyday on the way to take my kids to Tom Sawyer camp at that park across the street. Great place. Might move to La Canada if I hit the lottery.

OTOH, Ray's never gone to one of Bunchy's meetings despite being asked repeatedly. He's there for them on the easy, superficial stuff, particularly things he can outsource (Bunchy's settlement). He does the same with his family. Speaking of which, have we ever seen either brother at Ray's house? (I don't remember but I'm pretty sure not).

I'm sure he was just one of a bunch of guy's who hang out at the gym all the time. It's pretty clear Ray doesn't spend much time at the gym himself.

Oaks Christian isn't Catholic. They have a powerhouse football team.

A ton of people move to Calabasas because of the strong public school system. They are not part of LAUSD. I would move there in a heart beat, but my job is a little too far east of there and the commute would kill me. So I am stuck paying for private schools which is also killing me.

Speaking of other Los Angeles non-realistic things, my friend and I were laughing how Ray seems to get around so quickly from place to place. Fantasy land.

24 was the worst regarding this, but they had to do it considering the framework of the show.

I don't think it would be good tv to see Ray Donovan stuck in traffic for two hours on the 405.

this show is taking a drastically different approach then the Soprano's. In terms of historical accuracy with Mobsters

warning, Sopranos spoiler ahead :
Spoiler:
In Ray Donovan we have Jon Voight enter into a gay club and start dancing in the club, where as in the Sopranos one of the characters (Veto) is found in a gay club and later killed for it

So far I would give this show 2 out of 4 stars. I could see the gay stuff in True Blood but it does not logically fit into any plot in Ray Donovan. Also Rays wife has a bad Boston accent.

2 out of 4 seems about right. Definitely it could be 3 out of 4 if they stopped acting like Lost with the constant mysteries. Given the dearth of new episodes of shows that I watch I will keep tuning in hoping for the best
