It's not bad, its not a Boston accent though, she is Irish.

Also, how do you not know.she's Trixie from Deadwood?

since theyre from boston I would assume shes going for a boston accent, not an irish one. In which case its absolutely horrific...I wouldnt be surprised if we see it change as the season goes on

okay first episode was kinda slow & i gave up half way through

watched this one after dexter & i must say it picked up, i loved this episode & really gone be into the show from now on

so thank you showtime for another good show, but please no more black guys who clearly aren't good actors, so much in shape guys you can use to look like athletes who actually can act

p.s why does the media try to push the gay agenda unto us in every freaking show?, donovan is a ruthless man but still has the heart to tell a confused transexual its okay to feel the way he does & then goes out his way to give $ out his pocket for a sex change?.. hahah just laughable

Possible forshadowing?

whatever, lol @ "the gay agenda," and it wasn't out of ray's pocket, he got the money from Stu, the movie producer.

^^ exactly... its all about the gay agenda with media & these tv shows... im just glad i dont have to turn my head when i watch shows like game of thrones & breaking bad

every other show goes out their way to appease the gay community & it turns me off that clearly in almost every show where their is a male dominated audience they pull that crap

not saying homosexuals shouldn't be in shows aimed at male viewers but just dont make it so obvious as to what your trying to do ehh....

p.s pretty sure im coming off a bit homophobic but im just annoyed at the gay agenda being overtly pushy is all

Watched first 2 episodes.

Like: mickey (jon voight). Best character on the show imo. Very attractive personality and fun loving but has that evil side that he shows through looks/non verbal communication. Great lines from him as well. "You see the tits on that one" to the grandson had me laughing. Also like ray and his brothers.

I did eye roll him giving the money to the tranny. Gtfo. He is a fixer with a heart of gold. Seemed a bit of a stretch.

Also didnt love him getting a blowjob the first show. Would have been more interesting to have him not cheat on his wife from jump like recent male protaganist. Read an article on how ray was a retread of recent male antihereos a la tony soprano, don draper, walter white, etc. i actually had this thought while watching the pilot. Im no critic so if i pick up on it you know its pretty obvious.

Pretty weak lineup out in tv land though so this is def a must watch and ive enjoyed the first 2 eps.

Watched first two eps; will watch again. The production value is terrible, though, and it seems kind of cheap that they're slow rolling the big reveal about whatever the Dad did that is so bad that his son framed him for murder (?) but won't tell anyone else in the family, including his wife who never even met the man.

TIL - A lot of people are bad at fiction.*

Donovan's perception of himself is as a good guy, a strong family man. He has a huge white knight complex and in some ways is a big softy who "falls in love easily" with a very "traditional", if warped, sense of morality. He's basically a classic noir detective hero (Mike Hammer or Sam Spade in the Maltese Falcon who loathes his business partner and is screwing his wife but still spends the movie avenging his death because, "When a man's partner is killed, he's supposed to do something about it. It doesn't make any difference what you thought of him. He was your partner and you're supposed to do something about it. And it happens we're in the detective business. Well, when one of your organization gets killed, it's-it's bad business to let the killer get away with it, bad all around, bad for every detective everywhere.")

You see this very clearly with the former Disney teen star. He blows the job to protect her from the stalker and tells her she's "in the solution". Dude lives half in fantasy land where he's the star of his own movie.

He's not a liberal free-thinker at all. He pulls his son out of the pool when he sees him with the gay actor. The tranny is just part of his semi-delusional world view. He sees her as an innocent, a helpless victim being destroyed by a world he's knows well and is very comfortable in. Another damsel in distress so he can't help but rescue her. Saving her doesn't cost him anything, he gets the money from the producer with the broken wrist. And he pockets some of the money for himself - the envelope is not empty when he puts it away.

Because the reality is that he's not that much different than his father. His family is almost as dysfunctional and he's every bit the ruthless thug his father is and his career is not all that different. He's just built this mythology around himself so he can live with it.

*Ok, I already knew this.

Mickey was a coke distributor. Ray's actor friend (with the security fetish) got high on those drugs and killed his girlfriend. This murder was pinned on Mickey.

Ray's dead sister got high on drugs and jumped off a building. That's probably not the whole story but obviously Ray blames his father for her death and probably for a lot of other things (to his face he blames him for the Parkinsons and alcoholism).

I read his paying off the tranny as

1. Closing the loop, giving him/her/it more reason not to be a nuisance
2. Take care of a weakling who he doesn't view as totally bad, leading destructive life and hopefully set her straight no pun intended
3. Stick it to two people he's not fond of in the process

OOTV lurker but I'm enjoying the show so wanted to comment.

I think he pulled his son out because he too was molested as a child and is now overly protective. Isn't that what the ice cream cone scene, as well as the wry smile while looking at the priest's death info, telling us?

The ice cream cone scene is part of a dream sequence of his family's history, including the death of his sister. It doesn't mean it happened to him, just like he never jumped off a roof.

He's happy because the pedo who molested his brother is dead.

He's over-protective of everyone. But if he's a "way to appease the gay community" why does he feel the need to protect his son from teh ghey? Implying that gays are dangerous or all gays are pedophiles is the exact opposite of Exothermic's rants.

But we'll see what happens when Ray finds out his son is gay...

Finally got around to watching the first episode. Like others have said, the production value is not great, which isn't a bad thing in and of itself except that it seems the show is eager to rely upon long stretches of no dialogue.

Glad to hear the consensus is the second episode is better.
