Here's a podcast in which they interview one of the magic consultants of Fool Us (not Johnny Thompson -- the other one). I found the insights that he provides fascinating, and it implicitly explains some of the crappy acts that in no way could have fooled Penn and Teller (Jibrizi, the guy with no hands, etc.)
According to this guy, Penn and Teller is not a 'magic' show but a variety show. The acts are chosen by the network and the show producers, *not* by the magicians -- who then have the task of getting their presentation up to snuff. To the extent of actually completely re-writing somebody's performance, for example.
